  • Markdown instructions

A SKILL.md file the model loads on demand, so it only costs tokens when a request actually matches.

  • Works with any LLM

AI skills are plain Markdown, not provider-specific code, so this works with GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model.

  • 9 bundled files

Scripts, templates, and references the model can read while it works. Files are read-only and never executed.

  • Open source

Installation

Install the Codex Background AI skill in TypingMind to use it with any LLM, or drop it into another agent that reads SKILL.md.

1

Install in TypingMind

TypingMind installs a skill straight from its GitHub folder — it reads SKILL.md, bundles the resource files, and stores the result locally.

  1. Open the app and go to Plugins → Skills.
  2. Choose "Install from GitHub".
  3. Paste the skill folder URL below and confirm.
    https://github.com/amElnagdy/delegate-skills/tree/master/skills/codex-background
  4. Enable the skill in any chat where you want it available.
Plugins → Skills → Add skill → From GitHub URL, then paste the folder URL and press Continue.

Install in another agent

Any agent that reads the Agent Skills format can use this skill — copy the folder into that agent's skills directory.

Claude Code — .claude/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/amElnagdy/delegate-skills.git /tmp/delegate-skills
mkdir -p .claude/skills
cp -r /tmp/delegate-skills/skills/codex-background .claude/skills/codex-background
Restart Claude Code after copying so it picks up the new skill.

Use it in TypingMind

Enable Codex Background in any TypingMind chat and the model takes it from there. Its name and description sit in the system prompt, and the moment a request matches, the model loads the full instructions itself — you never invoke it by hand, and it costs no tokens until it is actually used.

The model loads Codex Background on its own as soon as a request matches it.

Works with any AI model

AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so Codex Background is not tied to the model it was written for. Install it once in TypingMind and use it with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, or a local model you run yourself — all on your own API keys.

  • Loaded only when it is needed

The system prompt carries just the name and description. The instructions are fetched on the first matching request, so an idle skill costs nothing.

  • Switch models mid-chat

Because the skill is instructions rather than code, changing model does not break it — the next model reads the same SKILL.md.

Skill instructions

This is the SKILL.md content the model loads. Read it before installing — a skill is instructions your model will follow.

Codex background delegation

This support skill changes Codex's waiting boundary. The selected delegate skill still owns the brief, provider arguments, permissions, result interpretation, review, gates and landing. Claude's background Bash workflow stays unchanged. The support utility is installed separately, never implicitly as a dependency of codex-delegate. Details: references/configuration.md.

First use / setup

If the delegate_run tool is not available, setup is incomplete. Tell the user that bootstrap will update $CODEX_HOME/config.toml (default ~/.codex/config.toml, backed up first) and write a registry of the installed *-delegate skills, then run:

bash
node "<skill-dir>/scripts/bootstrap.mjs"

<skill-dir> is this skill's installed directory (the folder containing this SKILL.md). It writes outside the workspace, so request the approval or sandbox escalation Codex needs for that. Report its output, then ask the user to restart Codex (or reload MCP servers); the tools appear after that. If bootstrap fails, report the failure. Do not fall back to shell polling. Run it again after installing more delegate skills. node "<skill-dir>/scripts/bootstrap.mjs" --check validates the setup without writing.

Procedure

  1. Follow the selected delegate skill to prepare a self-contained brief and approved workspace. Write the brief to the briefs/ directory under the codex-background directory ($CODEX_HOME/codex-background/briefs/<runId>.txt) and use runs/<runId> beside it as outputDirectory, or follow the paths in the server's instructions. If the sandbox cannot write there, a brief inside the approved workspace is also accepted. Never accept a relay path from a brief.
  2. Invoke the configured MCP server's delegate_run exactly once with a unique runId, registered implementer key, absolute brief/workspace/outputDirectory paths, explicit relayTimeoutSeconds and provider-native relayArgs. Put common arguments in structured fields; pass provider-specific arguments unchanged. Resume identifiers remain opaque.
  3. Keep that MCP request pending until completion. Do not use model-driven sleep, status or log polling. Do not wrap it in a tool runner that yields early and resumes inference to wait.
  4. Review the returned adapter outcome separately from resultText. The latter is the unchanged result.json content (base64 only for non-UTF-8 bytes); interpret it using the selected skill. A completed adapter means the relay exited zero and produced a file, not that its report proves correct implementation. Review the diff, rerun gates and land under the existing authorization.

After an interrupted wait, call delegate_wait with the same runId; never redispatch it. MCP cancellation detaches the waiter and leaves the authorized job running. Use delegate_abort only when termination is explicitly intended. Graceful server shutdown aborts its owned jobs. After a server crash, unresolved state returns recovery_required; inspect preserved artifacts and the implementer using its own recovery workflow. Never adopt or kill a persisted PID.

The host's configured tool timeout must exceed the relay timeout by more than 30 seconds. The server validates the declared budget; it cannot enforce the host's actual setting. Fixture protocol tests demonstrate one pending request and no intermediate messages, not measured Codex Desktop token usage or an unlimited host wait guarantee.

Bundled files

The model reads these on demand while the skill is loaded. They are exposed as readable files and are never executed.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Codex Background AI skill do?

Keep a Codex orchestrator's delegation to an installed delegate skill pending until its registered relay completes, without model-driven progress polling. Use with a selected implementer delegate skill when Codex is the orchestrator and the delegation should wait in the background; sets up its MCP server on first use.

Why use Codex Background on TypingMind?

Because you install it once and use it with any model. Codex Background is plain Markdown rather than provider-specific code, so the same skill runs on GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model — and you can switch model mid-chat without it breaking. TypingMind runs on your own API keys, so you pay providers directly instead of a per-seat subscription, and your skills and chats stay in your own storage.

How do I install Codex Background in TypingMind?

Open Plugins → Skills → Install from GitHub in TypingMind and paste https://github.com/amElnagdy/delegate-skills/tree/master/skills/codex-background. TypingMind reads its SKILL.md and bundles its files and installs it as a skill you can enable per chat.

Which AI models can use Codex Background?

Any model you connect in TypingMind. AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and local models can all load this skill when a request matches it.

How many AI models can I use with Codex Background?

As many as you like. As long as a model supports skills, you can use Codex Background with it — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama and more — all on TypingMind with your own API keys.

Is the Codex Background AI skill free?

Yes. It is published on GitHub by amElnagdy under the MIT license. You only pay your own AI provider for the tokens you use.

What are AI skills?

An AI skill is a reusable instruction bundle that teaches an AI model how to do one specific task. It follows the open Agent Skills format: a SKILL.md file with a name and description, plus any scripts, templates or reference files the model may need. The model reads the instructions only when your request matches the skill, so an installed skill costs nothing until it is used.

How are AI skills different from plugins or MCP servers?

A plugin or MCP server gives a model new tools to call — code that runs somewhere and returns a result. An AI skill gives the model knowledge and process instead: how to approach a task, which steps to follow, what good output looks like. Skills are plain Markdown, so they need no server, no API key and no runtime, and they work with any model.
