  • Markdown instructions

A SKILL.md file the model loads on demand, so it only costs tokens when a request actually matches.

  • Works with any LLM

AI skills are plain Markdown, not provider-specific code, so this works with GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model.

  • Self-contained

Everything the model needs lives in the instructions — no extra files to sync.

  • Open source

Published by appariciojunior on GitHub. Read the source before you install it.

Installation

Install the Video Editor Setup AI skill in TypingMind to use it with any LLM, or drop it into another agent that reads SKILL.md.

1

Install in TypingMind

TypingMind installs a skill straight from its GitHub folder — it reads SKILL.md, bundles the resource files, and stores the result locally.

  1. Open the app and go to Plugins → Skills.
  2. Choose "Install from GitHub".
  3. Paste the skill folder URL below and confirm.
    https://github.com/appariciojunior/video-editor-skills/tree/main/skills/video-editor-setup
  4. Enable the skill in any chat where you want it available.
Plugins → Skills → Add skill → From GitHub URL, then paste the folder URL and press Continue.
2

Install in another agent

Any agent that reads the Agent Skills format can use this skill — copy the folder into that agent's skills directory.

Claude Code — .claude/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/appariciojunior/video-editor-skills.git /tmp/video-editor-skills
mkdir -p .claude/skills
cp -r /tmp/video-editor-skills/skills/video-editor-setup .claude/skills/video-editor-setup
Restart Claude Code after copying so it picks up the new skill.

Use it in TypingMind

Enable Video Editor Setup in any TypingMind chat and the model takes it from there. Its name and description sit in the system prompt, and the moment a request matches, the model loads the full instructions itself — you never invoke it by hand, and it costs no tokens until it is actually used.

The model loads Video Editor Setup on its own as soon as a request matches it.

Works with any AI model

AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so Video Editor Setup is not tied to the model it was written for. Install it once in TypingMind and use it with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, or a local model you run yourself — all on your own API keys.

  • Loaded only when it is needed

The system prompt carries just the name and description. The instructions are fetched on the first matching request, so an idle skill costs nothing.

  • Switch models mid-chat

Because the skill is instructions rather than code, changing model does not break it — the next model reads the same SKILL.md.

Skill instructions

This is the SKILL.md content the model loads. Read it before installing — a skill is instructions your model will follow.

Video editor: setup

You are going to be a first-pass editor. The creator films, you import, cut, mark, score and caption; they make the taste calls. Everything below was learned editing real YouTube vlogs and classes. Build the workspace with the user, step by step, and ask before installing anything.

What the user needs

  • DaVinci Resolve Studio (the free version has no external scripting). In Preferences > System > General set External scripting using: Local, restart Resolve.
  • ffmpeg / ffprobe, Python 3.9+, Node 18+ (only for motion graphics).
  • A speech-to-text API with word timestamps and verbatim mode (we used ElevenLabs Scribe: word-level timings, audio events like "(laughs)", auto language detection). Any service with per-word start/end works.
  • Optional: an Epidemic Sound account connected as an MCP server (music + SFX), Figma MCP (brand boards), Remotion (rendered overlays).

Folder layout (create it with them)

<workspace>/
raw video/ the creator drops footage here: one file, or a folder of clips. READ-ONLY for you.
export edited video/ the creator exports here. Never touch.
  brand/ BRAND.md (look + voice rules), brand.json (tokens), logo, sfx/
  system/
config.json all defaults (see templates/config.example.json in this package)
keys.env API keys. NEVER print, echo, cat or read it into the conversation.
scripts/ the small scripts you write together (list below)
looks/ exported grade stills (.drx) for log footage
motion/ the motion-graphics kit (Remotion project)
videos/<video>/ per-video work: transcript, decisions, cuts, music bed, captions, overlays
CLAUDE.md house rules + a "Learned facts" list you keep adding to (dated, one line each)

Hard rules to write into CLAUDE.md on day one

  1. Never modify, move or copy the raw footage. Resolve plays the camera files in place; you write only small JSON/text into system/videos/<v>/.
  2. In Resolve, only add. Import into bins, create new timelines (a rebuild makes "v2", never overwrites), add on free tracks. Never change the creator's template timeline, their own timelines or their media. Never switch, create or close projects.
  3. Transcripts stay verbatim. Re-transcribing costs money: ask first.
  4. Keys stay secret (see above). Load them from the file inside scripts only.
  5. Decisions are by word index, timing is by script. You decide which words stay; a script turns that into frame-exact cuts. Never hand-edit generated cut files.
  6. If a step fails twice, stop and report the exact error.

The scripts to build (in this order)

Write each as a small, boring CLI that prints a short summary. Keep them in system/scripts/.

ScriptDoes
doctorchecks ffmpeg, Python, the key file exists (without printing it), Resolve reachable, which project is open
ingest <v>probe each clip (fps, size, audio layout), read the camera's sidecar XML for picture profile, transcribe, detect silences, write a manifest
plan_timeline <v>keep-list + moments → frame-exact cuts, pauses, markers, a human-readable review file (see rough-cut + vlog-pacing)
resolve_build <v>import, copy the template timeline, lay the cut, zoom, grade, markers, audio normalize (see resolve-scripting)
settings <v>per-video overrides on top of config.json (set cut.max_pause=1.0)
score_mix <v>music cues + ducking envelope + scene SFX (see music-and-sound)
captions <v>SRT from the transcript, cleaned and corrected (see captions)
overlays <v>word→frame map of a timeline, render beats, place them (see motion-overlays)
clean <v>moves a finished video's work files to the Trash after the creator says yes

Ask the creator once, then save to CLAUDE.md

  • Camera, lens, picture profiles (log vs. baked), frame rate they shoot, microphones.
  • Their Resolve project: bins (we used 01_Footage, 02_Audio, 03_Graphics, 04_Timelines), the template timeline name, which audio track is voice (A1), music (A2), SFX (A3).
  • Languages they speak on camera.
  • Do they talk to "the editor" while recording ("editor, put a video here")? Those lines become markers.
  • Their brand (colours, fonts, padding, motion feel) for the motion kit.

Then hand over to edit-video.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Video Editor Setup AI skill do?

Sets up an AI first-pass video editing workspace for DaVinci Resolve Studio with Claude Code - folders, tools, API keys handled safely, the Resolve template, and which small scripts to build first. Use for "set up my video editor", "start the video editing system", or before the first /edit-video when no workspace exists yet.

Why use Video Editor Setup on TypingMind?

Because you install it once and use it with any model. Video Editor Setup is plain Markdown rather than provider-specific code, so the same skill runs on GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model — and you can switch model mid-chat without it breaking. TypingMind runs on your own API keys, so you pay providers directly instead of a per-seat subscription, and your skills and chats stay in your own storage.

How do I install Video Editor Setup in TypingMind?

Open Plugins → Skills → Install from GitHub in TypingMind and paste https://github.com/appariciojunior/video-editor-skills/tree/main/skills/video-editor-setup. TypingMind reads its SKILL.md and installs it as a skill you can enable per chat.

Which AI models can use Video Editor Setup?

Any model you connect in TypingMind. AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and local models can all load this skill when a request matches it.

How many AI models can I use with Video Editor Setup?

As many as you like. As long as a model supports skills, you can use Video Editor Setup with it — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama and more — all on TypingMind with your own API keys.

Is the Video Editor Setup AI skill free?

It is published on GitHub by appariciojunior. Check the repository for licensing terms. You only pay your own AI provider for the tokens you use.

What are AI skills?

An AI skill is a reusable instruction bundle that teaches an AI model how to do one specific task. It follows the open Agent Skills format: a SKILL.md file with a name and description, plus any scripts, templates or reference files the model may need. The model reads the instructions only when your request matches the skill, so an installed skill costs nothing until it is used.

How are AI skills different from plugins or MCP servers?

A plugin or MCP server gives a model new tools to call — code that runs somewhere and returns a result. An AI skill gives the model knowledge and process instead: how to approach a task, which steps to follow, what good output looks like. Skills are plain Markdown, so they need no server, no API key and no runtime, and they work with any model.
