Run user research with atypica.ai through its MCP server. Use when the user wants to understand consumers, test a product or concept, or analyze a market. AI-simulated consumers are interviewed and discuss the question, and a report comes out. Covers starting a study, answering the agent's questions and plan, telling the user what the study is doing while it runs, reading interviews and discussions, and fetching the report or podcast.

  • Markdown instructions

    A SKILL.md file the model loads on demand, so it only costs tokens when a request actually matches.

  • Works with any LLM

    AI skills are plain Markdown, not provider-specific code, so this works with GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model.

  • 3 bundled files

    Scripts, templates, and references the model can read while it works. Files are read-only and never executed.

  • Open source

    Published by atypica-ai on GitHub. Read the source before you install it.

Installation

Install the Atypica Research AI skill in TypingMind to use it with any LLM, or drop it into another agent that reads SKILL.md.

1

Install in TypingMind

TypingMind installs a skill straight from its GitHub folder — it reads SKILL.md, bundles the resource files, and stores the result locally.

  1. Open the app and go to Plugins → Skills.
  2. Choose "Install from GitHub".
  3. Paste the skill folder URL below and confirm.
    https://github.com/atypica-ai/atypica-research-skill/tree/main
  4. Enable the skill in any chat where you want it available.
Plugins → Skills → Add skill → From GitHub URL, then paste the folder URL and press Continue.
2

Install in another agent

Any agent that reads the Agent Skills format can use this skill — copy the folder into that agent's skills directory.

Claude Code — .claude/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/atypica-ai/atypica-research-skill.git \
  .claude/skills/atypica-research
Restart Claude Code after copying so it picks up the new skill.

Use it in TypingMind

Enable Atypica Research in any TypingMind chat and the model takes it from there. Its name and description sit in the system prompt, and the moment a request matches, the model loads the full instructions itself — you never invoke it by hand, and it costs no tokens until it is actually used.

The model loads Atypica Research on its own as soon as a request matches it.

Works with any AI model

AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so Atypica Research is not tied to the model it was written for. Install it once in TypingMind and use it with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, or a local model you run yourself — all on your own API keys.

  • Loaded only when it is needed

    The system prompt carries just the name and description. The instructions are fetched on the first matching request, so an idle skill costs nothing.

  • Switch models mid-chat

    Because the skill is instructions rather than code, changing model does not break it — the next model reads the same SKILL.md.

Skill instructions

This is the SKILL.md content the model loads. Read it before installing — a skill is instructions your model will follow.

atypica Research

A study: AI-simulated consumers are interviewed and discuss the user's question, and a report comes out with traceable sources. Results are AI simulations; say so when you present them.

After the user confirms the plan, a study usually runs half an hour to an hour. During that time you are the user's only view of it: keep them in the loop the way a researcher would, without making them wait in silence or read logs.

Read references/api-reference.md for every tool's input and output.

Connection

If tools named atypica_study_* are available, it is connected. Otherwise add it to the client, for example Claude Desktop:

json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "atypica-research": {
      "transport": "http",
      "url": "https://atypica.ai/mcp/study",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer atypica_xxx" }
    }
  }
}

Without an MCP client, every tool is one JSON-RPC call over HTTP. scripts/mcp-call.sh wraps it:

bash
export ATYPICA_TOKEN="atypica_xxx"
scripts/mcp-call.sh atypica_study_create '{"content":"Why do young people buy sugar-free coffee?"}'
scripts/mcp-call.sh atypica_study_get_messages '{"userChatToken":"<token>","tail":5}' -o structured

The research is the same on every client; the account's credits pay for it.

The loop

One question is one study.

  1. atypica_study_create({ content }) starts it and returns its token, the userChatToken every other study tool takes. The research agent starts at once.
  2. Poll atypica_study_get_messages({ userChatToken, tail: 5 }) and act on next:
next.kindDo
runningTell the user what changed in steps (below); poll again in 1–2 minutes
tool_resultAsk the user (see "When the agent asks"), then atypica_study_submit_tool_result with their answer
artifact_readyFetch the report or podcast with next.token and deliver it
text_messageRelay what the agent said; send the user's reply with atypica_study_send_text_message
stalledSend "Please continue the research" as a text message

Write results carry a status: running (the agent started), saved_no_ai (out of credits: tell the user), saved_while_running (saved, but another write started the agent first: do not write it again; once next leaves running, send a short message to continue), ai_failed (write again). A write while the agent runs is rejected; wait for next to leave running.

Telling the user what is happening

steps lists what the study has done, one entry per step (social_observation, personas, interviews, discussion, audience_call, desk_research, report, podcast), each with a state (running, done, failed, interrupted) and a short summary when done. Interviews, a discussion and a social observation also list their records, one per interview, each with its own state. Report changes, not the list:

  • When the study starts, say what it will do in one sentence and give replayUrl: the user can open it without signing in to watch the study. It shows the study as of opening; reloading brings it up to date.
  • When a step starts or finishes, say so in a sentence or two from its summary: "Five AI consumers are ready: …", "Three of five interviews are done; the first ones point to price as the main hesitation."
  • When a long step starts (social_observation, interviews, discussion), mention replayUrl again: that is where the user can follow them as they happen.
  • When nothing changed, one short line or nothing. Never invent progress, counts or findings that steps does not show.

Personas: when a personas step is done, show the names and tags from its details as a short list labeled as AI-simulated consumers. For one in full, atypica_persona_get({ personaId }).

Going deeper: when the user asks what was actually said, read the record with atypica_study_get_step({ userChatToken, stepToken }) and quote from it. One record at a time; pass after with the previous total to read only what is new in a running step. Do not read steps the user has not asked about.

When the agent asks

The agent stops twice for the user: to clarify the question (tool-requestInteraction) and to confirm its plan (tool-makeStudyPlan). By default, show the question or plan, wait, and submit what the user chose. Do not pick options or confirm a plan without the user's answer or explicit delegation of that decision. Never take silence as a yes.

Explicit delegation such as "confirm whatever plan the agent proposes without asking me" permits atypica_study_submit_tool_result with { "confirmed": true } when the agent proposes a plan for that study. Report that you confirmed under the user's delegation. This permission covers plan confirmation, not unanswered clarification questions; ask those unless the user also delegated choosing their answers. Without delegation, show the actual plan and wait for approval.

next.toolTypeShowSubmit as output
tool-requestInteractionEach question with its options, as choices the user can pick{ "answer": ["<option>"] }; several questions { "answers": [{ "label", "answer": [...] }] }; { "skipped": true }
tool-makeStudyPlanThe plan in a few lines: what is studied, with whom, what comes out{ "confirmed": true }, or { "confirmed": false } and send the user's changes as a text message

atypica_study_submit_tool_result({ userChatToken, toolCallId: next.toolCallId, output }). Use the client's own way of offering choices when it has one, with no option preselected; if it requires a default selection, number the options instead and let the user reply. Do not choose exploratory defaults or describe an option as selected before the user chooses it. Option text is copied exactly; answer is always an array. An answer in the wrong shape is rejected and not saved.

Delivering

  • Report: atypica_study_get_report({ token: next.token }). Give the title, a short summary in your own words and shareUrl.
  • Podcast, when the study made one: atypica_study_get_podcast({ token: next.token }).
  • Earlier studies: atypica_study_list; each token is that study's userChatToken.

Who is simulated

By default the agent builds the consumers from the question. To use a group the user already has, find it with atypica_panel_search and pass panelId to atypica_study_create. atypica_persona_search needs locales (["zh-CN"], ["en-US"] or both).

Files

atypica_get_upload_credentials({ fileName, mimeType }), then HTTP PUT the file to putUrl with the same Content-Type within 5 minutes, then pass { objectUrl, name, mimeType, size } in attachments of atypica_study_create or atypica_study_send_text_message. Images: jpeg, png, gif, webp, bmp, svg. Documents: pdf, doc, docx, xls, xlsx, ppt, pptx, txt, md, json, csv. A study holds up to 5 images and 10 documents in all, 3 MB each, 50 MB in total.

Bundled files

The model reads these on demand while the skill is loaded. They are exposed as readable files and are never executed.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Atypica Research AI skill do?

Run user research with atypica.ai through its MCP server. Use when the user wants to understand consumers, test a product or concept, or analyze a market. AI-simulated consumers are interviewed and discuss the question, and a report comes out. Covers starting a study, answering the agent's questions and plan, telling the user what the study is doing while it runs, reading interviews and discussions, and fetching the report or podcast.

Why use Atypica Research on TypingMind?

Because you install it once and use it with any model. Atypica Research is plain Markdown rather than provider-specific code, so the same skill runs on GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model — and you can switch model mid-chat without it breaking. TypingMind runs on your own API keys, so you pay providers directly instead of a per-seat subscription, and your skills and chats stay in your own storage.

How do I install Atypica Research in TypingMind?

Open Plugins → Skills → Install from GitHub in TypingMind and paste https://github.com/atypica-ai/atypica-research-skill/tree/main. TypingMind reads its SKILL.md and bundles its files and installs it as a skill you can enable per chat.

Which AI models can use Atypica Research?

Any model you connect in TypingMind. AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and local models can all load this skill when a request matches it.

How many AI models can I use with Atypica Research?

As many as you like. As long as a model supports skills, you can use Atypica Research with it — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama and more — all on TypingMind with your own API keys.

Is the Atypica Research AI skill free?

It is published on GitHub by atypica-ai. Check the repository for licensing terms. You only pay your own AI provider for the tokens you use.

What are AI skills?

An AI skill is a reusable instruction bundle that teaches an AI model how to do one specific task. It follows the open Agent Skills format: a SKILL.md file with a name and description, plus any scripts, templates or reference files the model may need. The model reads the instructions only when your request matches the skill, so an installed skill costs nothing until it is used.

How are AI skills different from plugins or MCP servers?

A plugin or MCP server gives a model new tools to call — code that runs somewhere and returns a result. An AI skill gives the model knowledge and process instead: how to approach a task, which steps to follow, what good output looks like. Skills are plain Markdown, so they need no server, no API key and no runtime, and they work with any model.
