  • Markdown instructions

A SKILL.md file the model loads on demand, so it only costs tokens when a request actually matches.

  • Works with any LLM

AI skills are plain Markdown, not provider-specific code, so this works with GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model.

  • Self-contained

Everything the model needs lives in the instructions — no extra files to sync.

  • Open source

Published by borski on GitHub. Read the source before you install it.

Installation

Install the Award Holds AI skill in TypingMind to use it with any LLM, or drop it into another agent that reads SKILL.md.

1

Install in TypingMind

TypingMind installs a skill straight from its GitHub folder — it reads SKILL.md, bundles the resource files, and stores the result locally.

  1. Open the app and go to Plugins → Skills.
  2. Choose "Install from GitHub".
  3. Paste the skill folder URL below and confirm.
    https://github.com/borski/travel-hacking-toolkit/tree/main/plugins/travel-hacking-toolkit/skills/award-holds
  4. Enable the skill in any chat where you want it available.
Plugins → Skills → Add skill → From GitHub URL, then paste the folder URL and press Continue.
2

Install in another agent

Any agent that reads the Agent Skills format can use this skill — copy the folder into that agent's skills directory.

Claude Code — .claude/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/borski/travel-hacking-toolkit.git /tmp/travel-hacking-toolkit
mkdir -p .claude/skills
cp -r /tmp/travel-hacking-toolkit/plugins/travel-hacking-toolkit/skills/award-holds .claude/skills/award-holds
Restart Claude Code after copying so it picks up the new skill.

Use it in TypingMind

Enable Award Holds in any TypingMind chat and the model takes it from there. Its name and description sit in the system prompt, and the moment a request matches, the model loads the full instructions itself — you never invoke it by hand, and it costs no tokens until it is actually used.

The model loads Award Holds on its own as soon as a request matches it.

Works with any AI model

AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so Award Holds is not tied to the model it was written for. Install it once in TypingMind and use it with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, or a local model you run yourself — all on your own API keys.

  • Loaded only when it is needed

The system prompt carries just the name and description. The instructions are fetched on the first matching request, so an idle skill costs nothing.

  • Switch models mid-chat

Because the skill is instructions rather than code, changing model does not break it — the next model reads the same SKILL.md.

Skill instructions

This is the SKILL.md content the model loads. Read it before installing — a skill is instructions your model will follow.

Award Hold Policies per Loyalty Program

Reference data for which programs allow you to put an award flight ticket on hold, for how long, at what cost, and via what method (online vs phone). Critical for transferable-currency redemptions where transfers take minutes to days to clear.

Data lives in data/award-holds.json. Refresh cadence is 90 days because hold rules change rarely.

Why Holds Matter

When you find an award seat but the points are sitting in a transferable currency (Amex MR, Chase UR, Citi TYP, Capital One, Bilt, Marriott Bonvoy), you need to transfer them to the loyalty program before booking. Transfer times range from instant (most Amex/Chase partners) to 4 days (Marriott Bonvoy to airline partners).

Without a hold, you risk losing the award seat while the transfer pends. A hold removes the seats from the available pool for the duration, guaranteeing they'll still be there when you ticket.

When to Use This Skill

  • User is planning a transferable-points booking and asks "can I hold this?"
  • User is comparing programs to redeem the same partner award (e.g., Cathay first/business via AA vs Cathay Asia Miles)
  • User asks about the AA 24-hour hold change vs the old 5-day policy
  • Trip planning involves Marriott Bonvoy → airline transfers (4 days, must use a hold)
  • Researching whether a specific program supports holds before committing to the redemption strategy

When NOT to Use

  • Stopover questions (use stopovers skill)
  • Cancellation/refund questions (different concept — that's about UNDOING a ticketed booking, not holding before booking)
  • Award availability search (use seats-aero)
  • Routing-rule questions (use partner-awards)

Programs That Allow Holds (9 + Singapore agent-discretionary)

ANA, Emirates, and EVA Air were not on Frugal Flyer's canonical 2024 list but are reported allowing holds by One Mile at a Time, Points Miles & Bling, and Upgraded Points (2025-2026) — hence LIKELY confidence. Verify on the call before relying on the hold.

Programs That Do NOT Allow Holds

These programs require you to have the points in your account at booking time. Plan transfers accordingly.

  • United MileagePlus
  • Delta SkyMiles
  • Alaska Atmos Rewards (formerly Mileage Plan)
  • Air Canada Aeroplan
  • British Airways Executive Club
  • Iberia Plus
  • Qatar Privilege Club
  • Korean SKYPASS
  • Etihad Guest (no published policy)

Decision Rules

Rule 1: AA AAdvantage is the universal hold tool

If the redemption is bookable through American AAdvantage, use AA's online self-serve hold. No phone call, no fee, no credit card needed. Click "Hold" on the booking confirmation page. 24-hour window.

This works for partner awards too: Cathay first/business, Qatar Qsuite, JAL First, Iberia, BA, Royal Air Maroc, etc.

Rule 2: For Star Alliance partners, Lufthansa is the longest hold

5-day free hold via Miles & More phone line, $20 ticketing fee. Holds work for LH, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels, plus select Star Alliance partners. Ideal when you're transferring from Marriott Bonvoy (4-day transfer time).

Rule 3: For SkyTeam partners, Flying Blue holds 3 days

$25 phone-booking fee. Partner award holds work but are agent-discretionary.

Rule 4: Match transfer speed to program hold availability

Transferable CurrencyTransfer SpeedNeed a Hold?
Amex MR → most partnersInstantNo
Amex MR → ANA1-2 daysYes
Amex MR → BA, Singapore, CathayHoursMaybe
Chase UR → all partnersInstantNo
Capital One miles → mostInstantNo
Citi TYP → mostHoursMaybe
Bilt → all partnersInstantNo
Marriott Bonvoy → airline4 daysYES, always

Rule 5: When the redeeming program doesn't allow holds, redirect

Want a Cathay first/business via Alaska Atmos (no holds)? Book it via American AAdvantage instead (24h online hold, free) for the same award. Then transfer Bilt (1:1 instant), Citi TYP (1:1, 1-2 days), or Marriott Bonvoy (3:1 base ratio with a 5,000-mile bonus per 60K transferred, so 60K Bonvoy = 25K AAdvantage miles, 4-day delivery) to AAdvantage. AAdvantage does NOT partner with Amex MR or Chase UR.

Want a United partner award via MileagePlus (no holds)? Book it via Lufthansa Miles & More instead (5-day hold) when both programs ticket the same Star Alliance flight.

Rule 6: The 5-day-hold era is over for AA

AA reduced holds from 5 days to 24 hours in late 2024. The 24-hour hold still beats UA, AS, DL (which have no holds), but if you're booking AA from Marriott Bonvoy (4 days), the hold won't survive the transfer. Use Lufthansa Miles & More instead, OR transfer Bonvoy in advance and book on the spot.

Cross-References

  • transfer-partners — find which transferable currencies reach a given program
  • transfer-bonuses — current promotional bonuses on transfers
  • partner-awards — which alliance / bilateral awards each program can ticket (so you know your hold options for a given award)
  • booking-guidance — phone numbers, the canonical "hold before transfer" workflow
  • seats-aero — finding the award space to hold
  • stopovers — multi-segment / stopover awards have specific hold rules per program (some allow holds on online-only single-segment awards but not multi-segment ones requiring phone booking)
  • round-the-world — RTW bookings have unique hold rules. Star Alliance RTW must be ticketed >=72 hours before first departure (effectively a hard purchase deadline, not a hold). Most other RTWs require phone booking and immediate ticketing.
  • status-match — Elite tiers sometimes unlock waived close-in booking fees, priority on phone-booking queues, or other booking benefits. AA's hold policy applies equally to all members (24h online); other programs may grant elite-only hold privileges but verify per-program before assuming.

Source Hierarchy (Per Research Integrity Protocol)

  1. The airline's own award rules / phone-line confirmation — canonical
  2. Frugal Flyer's award-hold guide — most current authoritative third-party list (canonical for the 6 reliable + Singapore agent-discretionary set)
  3. Upgraded Points award-hold table — comprehensive 2025 update with phone numbers and fees
  4. Point.me, Frequent Miler, OMAAT — corroborating reports
  5. Live and Let's Fly, 10xTravel — for recent policy changes (e.g., the AA 5-day → 24-hour reduction)

When sources disagree (e.g., FF says Cathay = 2 days, UP says 3 days), the data file uses the more conservative number. Confidence markers reflect source agreement.

Avoiding Fabrication

  • Hold rules are agent-dependent in practice. The data file gives the published policy; actual behavior may vary by call.
  • The 6 reliable + Singapore agent-discretionary list is canonical as of 2024 (Frugal Flyer). If a user reports a hold experience with a program NOT on the list (e.g., Etihad reports from years past), document it as anecdotal but don't update the data without primary-source confirmation.
  • Phone numbers can change. Always verify the published phone number on the airline's site before recommending a call.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Award Holds AI skill do?

Per-program rules for placing award flights on hold before transferring points. Covers programs with holds (AA, Lufthansa, Flying Blue, Cathay, Turkish, Virgin Atlantic, ANA, Emirates, EVA Air) and those without. Includes transfer-speed reference.

Why use Award Holds on TypingMind?

Because you install it once and use it with any model. Award Holds is plain Markdown rather than provider-specific code, so the same skill runs on GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model — and you can switch model mid-chat without it breaking. TypingMind runs on your own API keys, so you pay providers directly instead of a per-seat subscription, and your skills and chats stay in your own storage.

How do I install Award Holds in TypingMind?

Open Plugins → Skills → Install from GitHub in TypingMind and paste https://github.com/borski/travel-hacking-toolkit/tree/main/plugins/travel-hacking-toolkit/skills/award-holds. TypingMind reads its SKILL.md and installs it as a skill you can enable per chat.

Which AI models can use Award Holds?

Any model you connect in TypingMind. AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and local models can all load this skill when a request matches it.

How many AI models can I use with Award Holds?

As many as you like. As long as a model supports skills, you can use Award Holds with it — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama and more — all on TypingMind with your own API keys.

Is the Award Holds AI skill free?

Yes. It is published on GitHub by borski under the MIT license. You only pay your own AI provider for the tokens you use.

What are AI skills?

An AI skill is a reusable instruction bundle that teaches an AI model how to do one specific task. It follows the open Agent Skills format: a SKILL.md file with a name and description, plus any scripts, templates or reference files the model may need. The model reads the instructions only when your request matches the skill, so an installed skill costs nothing until it is used.

How are AI skills different from plugins or MCP servers?

A plugin or MCP server gives a model new tools to call — code that runs somewhere and returns a result. An AI skill gives the model knowledge and process instead: how to approach a task, which steps to follow, what good output looks like. Skills are plain Markdown, so they need no server, no API key and no runtime, and they work with any model.
