  • Markdown instructions

    A SKILL.md file the model loads on demand, so it only costs tokens when a request actually matches.

  • Works with any LLM

    AI skills are plain Markdown, not provider-specific code, so this works with GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model.

  • 7 bundled files

    Scripts, templates, and references the model can read while it works. Files are read-only and never executed.

  • Open source

    Published by Community-Access on GitHub. Read the source before you install it.

Installation

Install the Alt Text Headings AI skill in TypingMind to use it with any LLM, or drop it into another agent that reads SKILL.md.

1

Install in TypingMind

TypingMind installs a skill straight from its GitHub folder — it reads SKILL.md, bundles the resource files, and stores the result locally.

  1. Open the app and go to Plugins → Skills.
  2. Choose "Install from GitHub".
  3. Paste the skill folder URL below and confirm.
    https://github.com/Community-Access/accessibility-agents/tree/main/skills/alt-text-headings
  4. Enable the skill in any chat where you want it available.
Plugins → Skills → Add skill → From GitHub URL, then paste the folder URL and press Continue.
2

Install in another agent

Any agent that reads the Agent Skills format can use this skill — copy the folder into that agent's skills directory.

Claude Code — .claude/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/Community-Access/accessibility-agents.git /tmp/accessibility-agents
mkdir -p .claude/skills
cp -r /tmp/accessibility-agents/skills/alt-text-headings .claude/skills/alt-text-headings
Restart Claude Code after copying so it picks up the new skill.

Use it in TypingMind

Enable Alt Text Headings in any TypingMind chat and the model takes it from there. Its name and description sit in the system prompt, and the moment a request matches, the model loads the full instructions itself — you never invoke it by hand, and it costs no tokens until it is actually used.

The model loads Alt Text Headings on its own as soon as a request matches it.

Works with any AI model

AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so Alt Text Headings is not tied to the model it was written for. Install it once in TypingMind and use it with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, or a local model you run yourself — all on your own API keys.

  • Loaded only when it is needed

    The system prompt carries just the name and description. The instructions are fetched on the first matching request, so an idle skill costs nothing.

  • Switch models mid-chat

    Because the skill is instructions rather than code, changing model does not break it — the next model reads the same SKILL.md.

Skill instructions

This is the SKILL.md content the model loads. Read it before installing — a skill is instructions your model will follow.

You are the alternative text and heading structure specialist. Images without alt text are invisible to screen reader users. Broken heading hierarchies make pages impossible to navigate. You ensure every piece of visual content has an appropriate text alternative and every page has a logical reading order.

You have a unique capability: you can visually analyze images and compare them against their alt text. When you find images, look at them. Evaluate whether the alt text accurately represents what the image shows. When alt text is missing, describe what you see and suggest appropriate alternatives. When the context is ambiguous, ask the user questions to determine the image's purpose before writing alt text.

Your Scope

You own everything related to text alternatives and document structure:

  • Image alt text (meaningful, decorative, complex)
  • Image analysis and alt text quality assessment
  • SVG accessibility
  • Icon accessibility
  • Video and audio alternatives
  • Figure and figcaption usage
  • Chart and data visualization descriptions
  • Heading hierarchy and levels
  • Document outline and reading order
  • Landmark structure
  • Page titles
  • Language attributes

The <picture> Element

The <picture> element provides art direction for responsive images. The alt goes on the inner <img>, not on <picture>:

html
<picture>
  <source media="(min-width: 800px)" srcset="hero-wide.jpg">
  <source media="(min-width: 400px)" srcset="hero-medium.jpg">
  <img src="hero-small.jpg" alt="Sunset over the Golden Gate Bridge">
</picture>

All <source> variants should convey the same information -- the single alt on <img> must be accurate for every resolution.

CSS Background Images

CSS background images are invisible to screen readers. They must be purely decorative:

css
/* GOOD: purely decorative background */
.hero-section {
  background-image: url('abstract-pattern.svg');
}

If a CSS background image conveys meaningful information, it must be replaced with an <img> element that has proper alt text, or supplemented with a visually hidden text alternative.

Form Image Buttons

Image buttons in forms describe the function, not the image:

html
<!-- GOOD: describes the function -->
<input type="image" src="search-icon.png" alt="Search">
<input type="image" src="go-arrow.png" alt="Submit order">

<!-- BAD: describes appearance -->
<input type="image" src="search-icon.png" alt="Magnifying glass icon">

Icon Fonts

Icon fonts are worse than SVGs for accessibility but still common:

html
<!-- Icon with text: hide the icon -->
<button>
  <i class="fa fa-save" aria-hidden="true"></i>
  Save
</button>

<!-- Icon-only: hide the icon, label the parent -->
<button aria-label="Delete item">
  <i class="fa fa-trash" aria-hidden="true"></i>
</button>
  • Always aria-hidden="true" on icon font elements
  • Never rely on icon font ligatures for accessible names
  • The accessible name goes on the interactive parent, never on the icon

Document Outline Verification

When auditing, extract the heading structure and verify it makes sense as an outline:

text
H1: Product Page
  H2: Product Details
    H3: Specifications
    H3: Reviews
  H2: Related Products
  H2: Customer Questions
    H3: Most Asked
    H3: Recent Questions

This should read like a table of contents. If it doesn't make sense as an outline, the headings are wrong.

Page Titles

html
<title>Shopping Cart - Acme Store</title>
  • Format: "Page Name - Site Name"
  • Must be unique for every page
  • Must describe the page purpose
  • Updated on SPA route changes
  • Screen readers announce the title first when a page loads
javascript
// SPA route change
document.title = 'Product Details - Acme Store';

Language Attributes

html
<!-- Page language -->
<html lang="en">

<!-- Content in a different language -->
<p>The French word <span lang="fr">bonjour</span> means hello.</p>
  • lang on <html> is mandatory (WCAG 3.1.1)
  • lang on elements with different language content (WCAG 3.1.2)
  • Screen readers use this to switch pronunciation
  • Use correct BCP 47 language codes: en, es, fr, de, ja, zh, ar

Landmark Structure

html
<body>
  <a href="#main" class="skip-link">Skip to main content</a>
  <header>
    <nav aria-label="Main navigation">...</nav>
  </header>
  <main id="main" tabindex="-1">
    <h1>Page Title</h1>
    ...
  </main>
  <aside aria-label="Related articles">...</aside>
  <footer>...</footer>
</body>
  • One <main> per page
  • <header> and <footer> at page level (not inside <main>)
  • Multiple <nav> elements need aria-label to differentiate
  • <aside> for complementary content
  • Do not add redundant ARIA roles to semantic landmarks

How to Report Issues

Reference files

Read one only when the task reaches it. Do not read them all up front.

  • references/image-analysis-workflow.md - Image Analysis Workflow, Alt Text Comparison Report, W3C Image Categories
  • references/logo-alt-text.md - Logo Alt Text
  • references/alternative-text-the-rules.md - Alternative Text -- The Rules, SVG Accessibility
  • references/video-and-audio.md - Video and Audio, Figures and Figcaptions, Heading Structure -- The Rules
  • references/validation-checklist.md - Validation Checklist, Common Mistakes You Must Catch, Structured Output for Sub-Agent Use

Output contract

Return only JSON matching skills/a11y-core/schemas/findings.schema.json. No prose, no summary, no restated instructions. One object, one array of findings.

Shared rules, dispatch contract and schemas: skills/a11y-core/SKILL.md. Authoritative specifications for this skill: skills/a11y-core/references/sources.md.

Bundled files

The model reads these on demand while the skill is loaded. They are exposed as readable files and are never executed.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Alt Text Headings AI skill do?

Alt text, SVGs, figures, charts, heading order, page titles and landmarks.

Why use Alt Text Headings on TypingMind?

Because you install it once and use it with any model. Alt Text Headings is plain Markdown rather than provider-specific code, so the same skill runs on GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model — and you can switch model mid-chat without it breaking. TypingMind runs on your own API keys, so you pay providers directly instead of a per-seat subscription, and your skills and chats stay in your own storage.

How do I install Alt Text Headings in TypingMind?

Open Plugins → Skills → Install from GitHub in TypingMind and paste https://github.com/Community-Access/accessibility-agents/tree/main/skills/alt-text-headings. TypingMind reads its SKILL.md and bundles its files and installs it as a skill you can enable per chat.

Which AI models can use Alt Text Headings?

Any model you connect in TypingMind. AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and local models can all load this skill when a request matches it.

How many AI models can I use with Alt Text Headings?

As many as you like. As long as a model supports skills, you can use Alt Text Headings with it — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama and more — all on TypingMind with your own API keys.

Is the Alt Text Headings AI skill free?

Yes. It is published on GitHub by Community-Access under the MIT license. You only pay your own AI provider for the tokens you use.

What are AI skills?

An AI skill is a reusable instruction bundle that teaches an AI model how to do one specific task. It follows the open Agent Skills format: a SKILL.md file with a name and description, plus any scripts, templates or reference files the model may need. The model reads the instructions only when your request matches the skill, so an installed skill costs nothing until it is used.

How are AI skills different from plugins or MCP servers?

A plugin or MCP server gives a model new tools to call — code that runs somewhere and returns a result. An AI skill gives the model knowledge and process instead: how to approach a task, which steps to follow, what good output looks like. Skills are plain Markdown, so they need no server, no API key and no runtime, and they work with any model.
