  • Markdown instructions

A SKILL.md file the model loads on demand, so it only costs tokens when a request actually matches.

  • Works with any LLM

AI skills are plain Markdown, not provider-specific code, so this works with GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model.

  • Self-contained

Everything the model needs lives in the instructions — no extra files to sync.

  • Open source

Published by cxcscmu on GitHub. Read the source before you install it.

Installation

Install the Mandarin Rhyming Guide AI skill in TypingMind to use it with any LLM, or drop it into another agent that reads SKILL.md.

1

Install in TypingMind

TypingMind installs a skill straight from its GitHub folder — it reads SKILL.md, bundles the resource files, and stores the result locally.

  1. Open the app and go to Plugins → Skills.
  2. Choose "Install from GitHub".
  3. Paste the skill folder URL below and confirm.
    https://github.com/cxcscmu/SkillLearnBench/tree/main/skills/b1-one-shot-claude-haiku-4-5/chinese-poem-generator/mandarin-rhyming-guide
  4. Enable the skill in any chat where you want it available.
Plugins → Skills → Add skill → From GitHub URL, then paste the folder URL and press Continue.
2

Install in another agent

Any agent that reads the Agent Skills format can use this skill — copy the folder into that agent's skills directory.

Claude Code — .claude/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/cxcscmu/SkillLearnBench.git /tmp/SkillLearnBench
mkdir -p .claude/skills
cp -r /tmp/SkillLearnBench/skills/b1-one-shot-claude-haiku-4-5/chinese-poem-generator/mandarin-rhyming-guide .claude/skills/mandarin-rhyming-guide
Restart Claude Code after copying so it picks up the new skill.

Use it in TypingMind

Enable Mandarin Rhyming Guide in any TypingMind chat and the model takes it from there. Its name and description sit in the system prompt, and the moment a request matches, the model loads the full instructions itself — you never invoke it by hand, and it costs no tokens until it is actually used.

The model loads Mandarin Rhyming Guide on its own as soon as a request matches it.

Works with any AI model

AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so Mandarin Rhyming Guide is not tied to the model it was written for. Install it once in TypingMind and use it with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, or a local model you run yourself — all on your own API keys.

  • Loaded only when it is needed

The system prompt carries just the name and description. The instructions are fetched on the first matching request, so an idle skill costs nothing.

  • Switch models mid-chat

Because the skill is instructions rather than code, changing model does not break it — the next model reads the same SKILL.md.

Skill instructions

This is the SKILL.md content the model loads. Read it before installing — a skill is instructions your model will follow.

Mandarin Rhyming for Classical Poetry

Modern Mandarin Pronunciation System

The Four Tones

1st Tone (ā): High and level
2nd Tone (á): Rising from middle to high
3rd Tone (ǎ): Falling then rising (dip)
4th Tone (à): Sharp fall from high to low

In regulated verse composition:

  • Tones determine 平仄 patterns (1st & 2nd = 平, 3rd & 4th = 仄)
  • Rhyming words must share the same final vowel sound + consonant pattern
  • Tone marks can be different; only the vowel+consonant final must match

Pinyin Finals (Rhyme Sets)

Finals Ending in -an

  • an (安/安): ān, án, ǎn, àn [pīnyīn: bān, pán, etc.]
  • ian: xiān, miǎn, diàn
  • uan: duān, guán, etc.
  • üan: xuān, etc.

Common characters for 安 rhyme:

  • 安 (ān) - peace/safety
  • 山 (shān) - mountain
  • 关 (guān) - gate/close
  • 还 (huán) - return
  • 间 (jiān) - space/between
  • 坚 (jiān) - firm
  • 颜 (yán) - face/color
  • 年 (nián) - year
  • 天 (tiān) - sky/heaven
  • 千 (qiān) - thousand

Finals Ending in -ing

  • ing: dīng, míng, píng, tíng
  • uing: guīng, duīng
  • iing: (not commonly used)

Common characters for -ing rhyme:

  • 平 (píng) - flat/peace
  • 鸣 (míng) - cry/sound
  • 京 (jīng) - capital
  • 情 (qíng) - emotion
  • 生 (shēng) - life/birth
  • 听 (tīng) - listen
  • 云 (yún) - cloud
  • 明 (míng) - bright

Finals Ending in -ang

  • ang: bāng, fāng, gāng, cháng
  • iang: jiāng, liáng, xiáng
  • uang: zhuāng, chuáng, guāng

Common characters:

  • 堂 (táng) - hall
  • 乡 (xiāng) - village/countryside
  • 光 (guāng) - light
  • 伤 (shāng) - wound/harm
  • 长 (cháng) - long
  • 江 (jiāng) - river

Finals Ending in -en

  • en: bēn, gēn, ōu
  • ien: diēn, etc.
  • uen: guēn, kūn
  • ün: lǜn, jūn

Finals Ending in -er

  • er: ér, hěr
  • Most standalone rhyme (儿/女/者 style)

Identifying Rhyme Families

Method 1: Same Final Sound

Two characters rhyme if they share the same final vowel sound:

  • 天 (tiān) + 年 (nián) = both end in "an" sound ✓
  • 天 (tiān) + 名 (míng) = different finals ✗

Method 2: Checking Modern Pronunciation

  1. Write character's pinyin with tone marks
  2. Remove the tone mark
  3. Keep only the final vowel pattern
  4. Characters with identical finals rhyme

Example:

  • 安 (ān) → final is "an"
  • 山 (shān) → final is "an"
  • Both rhyme! ✓

Perfect Rhyme Set for Peace Theme: -AN

The -an rhyme is ideal for peace poetry:

CharacterPinyinMeaningTone
安ānpeace, safe1st
山shānmountain1st
关guāngate, close1st
还huánreturn, restore2nd
间jiānspace, amid1st
颜yánface, appearance2nd
年niányear2nd
天tiānsky, heaven1st
千qiānthousand1st
闲xiánidle, leisurely2nd
殷yīndeeply, ardent1st
眼yǎneye3rd
难nándifficult2nd
看kànlook4th
汉hànHan (people)4th
乱luànchaos, disorder4th

Note: All share final "an" sound despite different tones.

Alternative Peace Rhymes

-ING Rhyme (平/鸣/生/听)

Clean, bright sound - good for hope/peace imagery

  • 平, 鸣, 京, 生, 情, 听, 明, 云, 行, 英

-IANG Rhyme (乡/伤/光/长)

Versatile, evocative - good for village/nature imagery

  • 乡, 伤, 光, 长, 江, 香, 狼, 殇, 祥, 张

Tone Pairing Rules for Rhyming

For Line-Final Position (Most Important)

The rhyming character should follow the 平仄 requirement:

  • If line ends with 平 tone rhyme: characters with 1st or 2nd tone
  • If line ends with 仄 tone rhyme: characters with 3rd or 4th tone

For the -an rhyme:

  • 1st/2nd tone characters: 安、天、山、关、还、年、闲、颜、难、乡
  • 3rd/4th tone characters: 眼、看、汉、乱、管、唤、贬

Practical Rhyming Workflow

  1. Select rhyme: Choose -an for peace theme
  2. Pick rhyming characters for lines 2, 4, 6, 8
  3. Check tones match 平仄 patterns required
  4. Build lines with non-rhyming characters (lines 1, 3, 5, 7)
  5. Verify pronunciation using pinyin finals, not individual character sounds

Common Rhyming Errors to Avoid

❌ Using characters that "sound similar" but have different finals

  • 天 (tiān, final: an) ≠ 真 (zhēn, final: en)
  • These don't rhyme!

❌ Mixing tone requirements

  • A line ending with 平 tone shouldn't have 仄 tone rhyme character
  • Violates the regulated pattern

❌ Using modern colloquial pronunciation instead of standard pinyin

  • Always use standard Mandarin pinyin
  • Not dialectal variations

Verification Checklist

  • All 4 rhyming characters share identical pinyin final
  • All rhyming characters have appropriate tones for line positions
  • No repeated rhyming characters in the poem
  • Rhyme sounds are recognizable and clear in modern Mandarin
  • Rhyming characters make semantic sense in context

Frequently asked questions

What does the Mandarin Rhyming Guide AI skill do?

Master modern Mandarin pinyin finals and tone systems to create accurate rhymes for classical poetry following contemporary pronunciation standards.

Why use Mandarin Rhyming Guide on TypingMind?

Because you install it once and use it with any model. Mandarin Rhyming Guide is plain Markdown rather than provider-specific code, so the same skill runs on GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model — and you can switch model mid-chat without it breaking. TypingMind runs on your own API keys, so you pay providers directly instead of a per-seat subscription, and your skills and chats stay in your own storage.

How do I install Mandarin Rhyming Guide in TypingMind?

Open Plugins → Skills → Install from GitHub in TypingMind and paste https://github.com/cxcscmu/SkillLearnBench/tree/main/skills/b1-one-shot-claude-haiku-4-5/chinese-poem-generator/mandarin-rhyming-guide. TypingMind reads its SKILL.md and installs it as a skill you can enable per chat.

Which AI models can use Mandarin Rhyming Guide?

Any model you connect in TypingMind. AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and local models can all load this skill when a request matches it.

How many AI models can I use with Mandarin Rhyming Guide?

As many as you like. As long as a model supports skills, you can use Mandarin Rhyming Guide with it — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama and more — all on TypingMind with your own API keys.

Is the Mandarin Rhyming Guide AI skill free?

Yes. It is published on GitHub by cxcscmu under the MIT license. You only pay your own AI provider for the tokens you use.

What are AI skills?

An AI skill is a reusable instruction bundle that teaches an AI model how to do one specific task. It follows the open Agent Skills format: a SKILL.md file with a name and description, plus any scripts, templates or reference files the model may need. The model reads the instructions only when your request matches the skill, so an installed skill costs nothing until it is used.

How are AI skills different from plugins or MCP servers?

A plugin or MCP server gives a model new tools to call — code that runs somewhere and returns a result. An AI skill gives the model knowledge and process instead: how to approach a task, which steps to follow, what good output looks like. Skills are plain Markdown, so they need no server, no API key and no runtime, and they work with any model.
