  • Markdown instructions

A SKILL.md file the model loads on demand, so it only costs tokens when a request actually matches.

  • Works with any LLM

AI skills are plain Markdown, not provider-specific code, so this works with GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model.

  • 2 bundled files

Scripts, templates, and references the model can read while it works. Files are read-only and never executed.

  • Open source

Published by daveebbelaar on GitHub. Read the source before you install it.

Installation

Install the Clone AI skill in TypingMind to use it with any LLM, or drop it into another agent that reads SKILL.md.

1

Install in TypingMind

TypingMind installs a skill straight from its GitHub folder — it reads SKILL.md, bundles the resource files, and stores the result locally.

  1. Open the app and go to Plugins → Skills.
  2. Choose "Install from GitHub".
  3. Paste the skill folder URL below and confirm.
    https://github.com/daveebbelaar/bama/tree/main/skills/plan/clone
  4. Enable the skill in any chat where you want it available.
Plugins → Skills → Add skill → From GitHub URL, then paste the folder URL and press Continue.
2

Install in another agent

Any agent that reads the Agent Skills format can use this skill — copy the folder into that agent's skills directory.

Claude Code — .claude/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/daveebbelaar/bama.git /tmp/bama
mkdir -p .claude/skills
cp -r /tmp/bama/skills/plan/clone .claude/skills/clone
Restart Claude Code after copying so it picks up the new skill.

Use it in TypingMind

Enable Clone in any TypingMind chat and the model takes it from there. Its name and description sit in the system prompt, and the moment a request matches, the model loads the full instructions itself — you never invoke it by hand, and it costs no tokens until it is actually used.

The model loads Clone on its own as soon as a request matches it.

Works with any AI model

AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so Clone is not tied to the model it was written for. Install it once in TypingMind and use it with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, or a local model you run yourself — all on your own API keys.

  • Loaded only when it is needed

The system prompt carries just the name and description. The instructions are fetched on the first matching request, so an idle skill costs nothing.

  • Switch models mid-chat

Because the skill is instructions rather than code, changing model does not break it — the next model reads the same SKILL.md.

Skill instructions

This is the SKILL.md content the model loads. Read it before installing — a skill is instructions your model will follow.

Output: a folder of screenshots, one index that describes everything the app shows, and a backlog built from it.

1. Pick the tool

The app isUse
A native Mac app, or ElectronComputer use (mcp__computer-use__*)
A web appA browser tool: the built-in browser, Claude in Chrome, or Playwright

Computer use needs a Pro or Max plan, and Accessibility and Screen Recording permissions. Claude desktop: Settings > This computer > Enable computer use. Claude Code CLI: /mcp > computer-use > Enable. Ask for access to the reference app only. Browsers are view-only and terminals are click-only for computer use.

2. Agree on privacy

Tell the user you will see everything in the app. Suggest a demo account or sample data. Look, do not touch: open screens and menus, press Escape to close dialogs. Type, create, change, or delete only when the user says so.

3. Save real files

Computer use screenshots come to you downscaled, not to disk. Save each screen at full resolution with the script in this skill:

bash
"${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/scripts/window-shot.sh" "<App Name>" docs/screens/01-inbox.png

It captures the app's largest window. For menus and popovers outside the window, use screencapture -x docs/screens/<name>.png and note it in the index. In a browser, use the tool's screenshot with a file path.

4. Walk the app in this order

  1. Main window, default page.
  2. Every sidebar item, top to bottom. Expand collapsed groups.
  3. Every view mode (list, board, calendar), sort menu, filter menu.
  4. One item opened in detail: panel, fields, sub-items.
  5. Creation flows: add button, quick-add panel (global shortcut), inline editor. Empty and half filled in, then Escape.
  6. Context menus on an item, a section, a sidebar entry.
  7. The menu bar: every menu once. Record every item and shortcut.
  8. Settings: every pane.
  9. Empty states.
  10. Dark mode: the two or three main pages again.

Name files NN-page-or-state.png in capture order. The walk is exhaustive when every sidebar item, menu, and settings pane has a file.

Lessons from real walkthroughs

  • Many "Mac apps" are Electron. Their menu bars are nearly empty, and the actions hide in hover toolbars, right-click menus, and command palettes. Hover rows and search the palettes (typing in a palette search is safe; do not press Return).
  • Background clicks (app_* tools) fail on some Electron screens. Then ask for full-screen control, and tell the user to keep off the mouse.
  • Preview fields test behavior without saving. A "Type a date" box in a to-do app shows how it parses a phrase before anything is stored. 30 phrases there corrected 3 answers from the docs.
  • Note any change in the user's data during the walk, even if you are not sure you caused it, and tell them.

5. Write docs/screens/INDEX.md

One section per screenshot:

markdown
## 03-upcoming.png

Page: Upcoming. Reached from: sidebar > Upcoming.
Layout: header with month picker and "Today" button; week strip; tasks
grouped by day, each day a section with a heading and an add button.
Elements: task row (checkbox, title, description line, date, project tag,
priority flag color).
Actions: complete, open, drag to another day, add to a day.
Shortcuts seen: none.

End with three lists:

  • Navigation map: sidebar items and where each leads.
  • Command map: every menu item and keyboard shortcut.
  • Data model guess: the nouns and fields you saw.

Describe structure and behavior. Take no text, logo, or icon from the app: rebuilding for personal use is fine, copying a brand is not. Keep the PNGs out of public repos (add docs/screens/*.png to .gitignore).

6. Turn it into stories

Call the Skill tool with user-stories. Every screen in the index ends up linked from at least one story, or listed under ## Dropped.

Done when INDEX.md has a section per PNG, the three maps exist, and docs/STORIES.md covers every screen.

Bundled files

The model reads these on demand while the skill is loaded. They are exposed as readable files and are never executed.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Clone AI skill do?

Walk through any existing app (native Mac app with computer use, web app with a browser), screenshot every screen, menu, and dialog, write a screen index, and turn it into user stories. Use when the user wants to clone, rebuild, replace, or copy the design of an app, or says "screenshot every screen".

Why use Clone on TypingMind?

Because you install it once and use it with any model. Clone is plain Markdown rather than provider-specific code, so the same skill runs on GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model — and you can switch model mid-chat without it breaking. TypingMind runs on your own API keys, so you pay providers directly instead of a per-seat subscription, and your skills and chats stay in your own storage.

How do I install Clone in TypingMind?

Open Plugins → Skills → Install from GitHub in TypingMind and paste https://github.com/daveebbelaar/bama/tree/main/skills/plan/clone. TypingMind reads its SKILL.md and bundles its files and installs it as a skill you can enable per chat.

Which AI models can use Clone?

Any model you connect in TypingMind. AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and local models can all load this skill when a request matches it.

How many AI models can I use with Clone?

As many as you like. As long as a model supports skills, you can use Clone with it — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama and more — all on TypingMind with your own API keys.

Is the Clone AI skill free?

Yes. It is published on GitHub by daveebbelaar under the MIT license. You only pay your own AI provider for the tokens you use.

What are AI skills?

An AI skill is a reusable instruction bundle that teaches an AI model how to do one specific task. It follows the open Agent Skills format: a SKILL.md file with a name and description, plus any scripts, templates or reference files the model may need. The model reads the instructions only when your request matches the skill, so an installed skill costs nothing until it is used.

How are AI skills different from plugins or MCP servers?

A plugin or MCP server gives a model new tools to call — code that runs somewhere and returns a result. An AI skill gives the model knowledge and process instead: how to approach a task, which steps to follow, what good output looks like. Skills are plain Markdown, so they need no server, no API key and no runtime, and they work with any model.
