os-integrations

Deep macOS integrations for a native app, such as global hotkeys, menu bar items, floating panels, window control with Accessibility, screen capture and recording, clipboard, Shortcuts and Spotlight, URL schemes, login items, a CLI, and the permissions each one needs. Use when an app must reach outside its own window or control other apps.

  • Markdown instructions

A SKILL.md file the model loads on demand, so it only costs tokens when a request actually matches.

  • Works with any LLM

AI skills are plain Markdown, not provider-specific code, so this works with GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model.

  • 2 bundled files

Scripts, templates, and references the model can read while it works. Files are read-only and never executed.

  • Open source

Published by daveebbelaar on GitHub. Read the source before you install it.

Installation

Install the Os Integrations AI skill in TypingMind to use it with any LLM, or drop it into another agent that reads SKILL.md.

1

Install in TypingMind

TypingMind installs a skill straight from its GitHub folder — it reads SKILL.md, bundles the resource files, and stores the result locally.

  1. Open the app and go to Plugins → Skills.
  2. Choose "Install from GitHub".
  3. Paste the skill folder URL below and confirm.
    https://github.com/daveebbelaar/bama/tree/main/skills/code/os-integrations
  4. Enable the skill in any chat where you want it available.
Plugins → Skills → Add skill → From GitHub URL, then paste the folder URL and press Continue.
2

Install in another agent

Any agent that reads the Agent Skills format can use this skill — copy the folder into that agent's skills directory.

Claude Code — .claude/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/daveebbelaar/bama.git /tmp/bama
mkdir -p .claude/skills
cp -r /tmp/bama/skills/code/os-integrations .claude/skills/os-integrations
Restart Claude Code after copying so it picks up the new skill.

Use it in TypingMind

Enable Os Integrations in any TypingMind chat and the model takes it from there. Its name and description sit in the system prompt, and the moment a request matches, the model loads the full instructions itself — you never invoke it by hand, and it costs no tokens until it is actually used.

The model loads Os Integrations on its own as soon as a request matches it.

Works with any AI model

AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so Os Integrations is not tied to the model it was written for. Install it once in TypingMind and use it with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, or a local model you run yourself — all on your own API keys.

  • Loaded only when it is needed

The system prompt carries just the name and description. The instructions are fetched on the first matching request, so an idle skill costs nothing.

  • Switch models mid-chat

Because the skill is instructions rather than code, changing model does not break it — the next model reads the same SKILL.md.

Skill instructions

This is the SKILL.md content the model loads. Read it before installing — a skill is instructions your model will follow.

macOS integrations

A Mac app is a set of entry points around the system, not one window. This skill picks the API for each entry point and the permission it costs. Code for every row is in recipes.md.

Prefer the row with no permission when two rows solve the same job.

Permissions

  • Ask at the moment of use. Explain in one line what breaks without it. The exception: an app whose core job needs the permission (a window manager needs Accessibility) shows its permissions page on first launch.
  • Show the state of every permission on one Settings page, with a button that opens the right pane: x-apple.systempreferences:com.apple.preference.security?Privacy_Accessibility (or Privacy_ScreenCapture, Privacy_AllFiles).
  • The user grants it in System Settings, and nothing calls your app back. Check every 1 to 2 seconds while a permission is missing or a view that shows it is open. Otherwise check every 20 seconds, with a timer tolerance. Check once more right when such a view opens.
  • Every NS...UsageDescription key (camera, microphone, Apple Events) must be in Info.plist before the first request, or the app crashes.

Menu bar items, widgets, and snippets

  • A menu bar item shows a menu, unless the feature is too complex for one. Its icon is a template image (an SF Symbol works). People can turn it off in Settings, and nothing is reachable only through it: the Dock menu and the main window offer the same actions. MenuBarExtra already works with keyboard navigation; an NSStatusItem that opens a custom window must too (WWDC26-289).
  • A widget shows one idea from the app's purpose, with content that changes through the day. Sizes small, medium, large, and extra large. On the desktop it renders vibrant and nearly gray, so it must read without color. Standard margins 16 pt. A click deep-links to the exact place; buttons and toggles in it run App Intents. Never a whole app squeezed into a widget.
  • A snippet is the view an App Intent shows in Spotlight, Siri, or Shortcuts: a result (with Done) or a confirmation (Cancel plus a button that names the action, never "OK"). At most 400 pt tall, readable in light and dark, and clear without the spoken text.
  • Badge the Dock icon only with a count of unread notifications.

Signing keeps grants

macOS stores Accessibility and Screen Recording grants per code signature and path. To keep them across rebuilds:

  • Sign with one stable "Apple Development" certificate. Ad hoc signing asks again after every build.
  • Install to the same path every time (/Applications/<App>.app or ~/Applications/<App>.app).
  • No App Sandbox for apps that use Accessibility, event taps, or other apps' windows. The sandbox blocks them.
  • After an install, refresh Launch Services so the Dock shows the new icon: lsregister -f -R -trusted /Applications/<App>.app (the tool lives in /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/).

If a grant looks on but the API fails, the signature changed. Remove the app from the list in System Settings, add it again, restart the app.

Make every feature reachable three ways

Each feature gets: a menu item with a shortcut, a URL (<app>://action/<name>), and an App Intent. The same action enum backs all three, so a new action shows up everywhere at once. App Intent enum titles must be literals, so they can drift from menu titles: add a self-test check that they match. The URL also lets test-mac-app drive the feature from a script.

Done when every entry point in the brief's "System hooks" works from a clean install, and Settings shows the state of every permission it needs.

Bundled files

The model reads these on demand while the skill is loaded. They are exposed as readable files and are never executed.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Os Integrations AI skill do?

Deep macOS integrations for a native app, such as global hotkeys, menu bar items, floating panels, window control with Accessibility, screen capture and recording, clipboard, Shortcuts and Spotlight, URL schemes, login items, a CLI, and the permissions each one needs. Use when an app must reach outside its own window or control other apps.

Why use Os Integrations on TypingMind?

Because you install it once and use it with any model. Os Integrations is plain Markdown rather than provider-specific code, so the same skill runs on GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model — and you can switch model mid-chat without it breaking. TypingMind runs on your own API keys, so you pay providers directly instead of a per-seat subscription, and your skills and chats stay in your own storage.

How do I install Os Integrations in TypingMind?

Open Plugins → Skills → Install from GitHub in TypingMind and paste https://github.com/daveebbelaar/bama/tree/main/skills/code/os-integrations. TypingMind reads its SKILL.md and bundles its files and installs it as a skill you can enable per chat.

Which AI models can use Os Integrations?

Any model you connect in TypingMind. AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and local models can all load this skill when a request matches it.

How many AI models can I use with Os Integrations?

As many as you like. As long as a model supports skills, you can use Os Integrations with it — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama and more — all on TypingMind with your own API keys.

Is the Os Integrations AI skill free?

Yes. It is published on GitHub by daveebbelaar under the MIT license. You only pay your own AI provider for the tokens you use.

What are AI skills?

An AI skill is a reusable instruction bundle that teaches an AI model how to do one specific task. It follows the open Agent Skills format: a SKILL.md file with a name and description, plus any scripts, templates or reference files the model may need. The model reads the instructions only when your request matches the skill, so an installed skill costs nothing until it is used.

How are AI skills different from plugins or MCP servers?

A plugin or MCP server gives a model new tools to call — code that runs somewhere and returns a result. An AI skill gives the model knowledge and process instead: how to approach a task, which steps to follow, what good output looks like. Skills are plain Markdown, so they need no server, no API key and no runtime, and they work with any model.
