  • Markdown instructions

    A SKILL.md file the model loads on demand, so it only costs tokens when a request actually matches.

  • Works with any LLM

    AI skills are plain Markdown, not provider-specific code, so this works with GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model.

  • 14 bundled files

    Scripts, templates, and references the model can read while it works. Files are read-only and never executed.

  • Open source

    Published by hookdeck on GitHub. Read the source before you install it.

Installation

Install the 8x8 Webhooks AI skill in TypingMind to use it with any LLM, or drop it into another agent that reads SKILL.md.

1

Install in TypingMind

TypingMind installs a skill straight from its GitHub folder — it reads SKILL.md, bundles the resource files, and stores the result locally.

  1. Open the app and go to Plugins → Skills.
  2. Choose "Install from GitHub".
  3. Paste the skill folder URL below and confirm.
    https://github.com/hookdeck/webhook-skills/tree/main/skills/8x8-webhooks
  4. Enable the skill in any chat where you want it available.
Plugins → Skills → Add skill → From GitHub URL, then paste the folder URL and press Continue.
2

Install in another agent

Any agent that reads the Agent Skills format can use this skill — copy the folder into that agent's skills directory.

Claude Code — .claude/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/hookdeck/webhook-skills.git /tmp/webhook-skills
mkdir -p .claude/skills
cp -r /tmp/webhook-skills/skills/8x8-webhooks .claude/skills/8x8-webhooks
Restart Claude Code after copying so it picks up the new skill.

Use it in TypingMind

Enable 8x8 Webhooks in any TypingMind chat and the model takes it from there. Its name and description sit in the system prompt, and the moment a request matches, the model loads the full instructions itself — you never invoke it by hand, and it costs no tokens until it is actually used.

The model loads 8x8 Webhooks on its own as soon as a request matches it.

Works with any AI model

AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so 8x8 Webhooks is not tied to the model it was written for. Install it once in TypingMind and use it with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, or a local model you run yourself — all on your own API keys.

  • Loaded only when it is needed

    The system prompt carries just the name and description. The instructions are fetched on the first matching request, so an idle skill costs nothing.

  • Switch models mid-chat

    Because the skill is instructions rather than code, changing model does not break it — the next model reads the same SKILL.md.

Skill instructions

This is the SKILL.md content the model loads. Read it before installing — a skill is instructions your model will follow.

8x8 Webhooks

8x8 Connect (CPaaS) sends webhooks for inbound SMS, SMS and Chat Apps delivery receipts, short URL clicks and WhatsApp/Viber template updates. Payloads are not signed. The only authentication is an optional static HTTP Authorization value you set on the webhook in 8x8, which 8x8 sends back as the request's Authorization header.

When to Use This Skill

  • How do I receive 8x8 webhooks?
  • How do I verify the 8x8 HTTP Authorization header (Bearer or Basic)?
  • Does 8x8 sign webhook payloads? (No: shared credential in the Authorization header only)
  • Why does my 8x8 webhook endpoint return 401?
  • How do I handle inbound_message_received or outbound_message_status_changed events?

Verification (core)

When you add a webhook in 8x8 Connect (portal or Webhooks Configuration API, field httpAuthorization), you can set an HTTP Authorization value such as Bearer 9QQhlsEb8VY or Basic dXNlcjpwYXNzd29yZA==. Paste it exactly as set in 8x8, including any Bearer or Basic prefix. OAuth authentication is not supported. Compare the whole Authorization header to that value. Do not strip, parse or base64-decode it, for Basic as well as Bearer:

javascript
const crypto = require('crypto');

// Hash both sides: equal-length buffers, so timingSafeEqual never throws.
function safeEqual(a, b) {
  const ha = crypto.createHash('sha256').update(String(a)).digest();
  const hb = crypto.createHash('sha256').update(String(b)).digest();
  return crypto.timingSafeEqual(ha, hb);
}

function verify8x8Request(headers, expected = process.env.EIGHT_X_EIGHT_AUTHORIZATION) {
  if (!expected) return false; // never accept when unconfigured
  const received = headers['authorization'];    // full value, e.g. "Bearer 9QQhlsEb8VY"
  return Boolean(received) && safeEqual(received, expected);
}

Return 401 when this fails, 400 for a body that isn't a JSON object, and 200 once handled. Read the body raw (express.raw({ type: '*/*' })) so any content type works, and parse it only after the check. Python and Next.js equivalents are in references/verification.md.

A static shared credential authenticates the sender, not the body, and gives no replay protection (no signature, no timestamp). Use HTTPS and rotate the credential in 8x8 if it leaks.

For complete handlers with tests, see examples/express/, examples/nextjs/, examples/fastapi/.

Event Types

The body is JSON with an eventType string:

eventTypeSent when
inbound_message_receivedAn SMS or Chat Apps/WhatsApp message arrives for your number
outbound_message_status_changedA delivery receipt: payload.status.state is queued, sent, delivered, undelivered, rejected or read
external_app_messageA message sent from the WhatsApp Business App (Chat Apps DR v9)
short_url_clickedA recipient clicks a shortened link in your SMS
template_status_updateA WhatsApp or Viber template is approved, rejected, paused and so on
template_category_updateA WhatsApp template's category changes
template_quality_updateA WhatsApp template's quality score changes
template_correct_category_detectionWhatsApp detects a more correct category for a template
phone_number_quality_updateA WhatsApp phone number's quality changes
account_updateYour WhatsApp Business Account changes (eventDetails.event refines it, e.g. ACCOUNT_VIOLATION)
whatsapp_automatic_eventsMeta detects a purchase or lead conversion in a thread from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad

Failed deliveries (connection error, timeout, 4xx or 5xx) are retried after 1, 10, 30 and 90 seconds, so dedupe on payload.umid plus payload.status.state (or eventId).

Not Covered

  • The OAuth client-credentials option (rotating tokens)
  • The separate 8x8 Contact Center Chat x-8x8-signature (JWS) webhooks

Frequently asked questions

What does the 8x8 Webhooks AI skill do?

Receive and authenticate 8x8 Connect webhooks. Use when setting up an 8x8 webhook endpoint, checking the optional HTTP Authorization value (Bearer or Basic), debugging 401s, or handling inbound_message_received, outbound_message_status_changed, short_url_clicked and template_status_update events from 8x8 SMS and Chat Apps (WhatsApp).

Why use 8x8 Webhooks on TypingMind?

Because you install it once and use it with any model. 8x8 Webhooks is plain Markdown rather than provider-specific code, so the same skill runs on GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model — and you can switch model mid-chat without it breaking. TypingMind runs on your own API keys, so you pay providers directly instead of a per-seat subscription, and your skills and chats stay in your own storage.

How do I install 8x8 Webhooks in TypingMind?

Open Plugins → Skills → Install from GitHub in TypingMind and paste https://github.com/hookdeck/webhook-skills/tree/main/skills/8x8-webhooks. TypingMind reads its SKILL.md and bundles its files and installs it as a skill you can enable per chat.

Which AI models can use 8x8 Webhooks?

Any model you connect in TypingMind. AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and local models can all load this skill when a request matches it.

How many AI models can I use with 8x8 Webhooks?

As many as you like. As long as a model supports skills, you can use 8x8 Webhooks with it — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama and more — all on TypingMind with your own API keys.

Is the 8x8 Webhooks AI skill free?

Yes. It is published on GitHub by hookdeck under the MIT license. You only pay your own AI provider for the tokens you use.

What are AI skills?

An AI skill is a reusable instruction bundle that teaches an AI model how to do one specific task. It follows the open Agent Skills format: a SKILL.md file with a name and description, plus any scripts, templates or reference files the model may need. The model reads the instructions only when your request matches the skill, so an installed skill costs nothing until it is used.

How are AI skills different from plugins or MCP servers?

A plugin or MCP server gives a model new tools to call — code that runs somewhere and returns a result. An AI skill gives the model knowledge and process instead: how to approach a task, which steps to follow, what good output looks like. Skills are plain Markdown, so they need no server, no API key and no runtime, and they work with any model.
