  • Markdown instructions

A SKILL.md file the model loads on demand, so it only costs tokens when a request actually matches.

  • Works with any LLM

AI skills are plain Markdown, not provider-specific code, so this works with GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model.

  • 6 bundled files

Scripts, templates, and references the model can read while it works. Files are read-only and never executed.

  • Open source

Published by JBurlison on GitHub. Read the source before you install it.

Installation

Install the Wow Addon Development AI skill in TypingMind to use it with any LLM, or drop it into another agent that reads SKILL.md.

1

Install in TypingMind

TypingMind installs a skill straight from its GitHub folder — it reads SKILL.md, bundles the resource files, and stores the result locally.

  1. Open the app and go to Plugins → Skills.
  2. Choose "Install from GitHub".
  3. Paste the skill folder URL below and confirm.
    https://github.com/JBurlison/WoWAddonAPIAgents/tree/main/plugins/wow-addon-dev/skills/wow-addon-development
  4. Enable the skill in any chat where you want it available.
Plugins → Skills → Add skill → From GitHub URL, then paste the folder URL and press Continue.
2

Install in another agent

Any agent that reads the Agent Skills format can use this skill — copy the folder into that agent's skills directory.

Claude Code — .claude/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/JBurlison/WoWAddonAPIAgents.git /tmp/WoWAddonAPIAgents
mkdir -p .claude/skills
cp -r /tmp/WoWAddonAPIAgents/plugins/wow-addon-dev/skills/wow-addon-development .claude/skills/wow-addon-development
Restart Claude Code after copying so it picks up the new skill.

Use it in TypingMind

Enable Wow Addon Development in any TypingMind chat and the model takes it from there. Its name and description sit in the system prompt, and the moment a request matches, the model loads the full instructions itself — you never invoke it by hand, and it costs no tokens until it is actually used.

The model loads Wow Addon Development on its own as soon as a request matches it.

Works with any AI model

AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so Wow Addon Development is not tied to the model it was written for. Install it once in TypingMind and use it with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, or a local model you run yourself — all on your own API keys.

  • Loaded only when it is needed

The system prompt carries just the name and description. The instructions are fetched on the first matching request, so an idle skill costs nothing.

  • Switch models mid-chat

Because the skill is instructions rather than code, changing model does not break it — the next model reads the same SKILL.md.

Skill instructions

This is the SKILL.md content the model loads. Read it before installing — a skill is instructions your model will follow.

Establish the target contract

  1. Read wow-client-targets before selecting APIs. Explicit user targets take precedence over existing configuration. Inspect TOCs, packaging configuration, and existing compatibility modules; ask if the target remains ambiguous. Do not silently default to Retail.
  2. Support retail, forever, classic, and all (exactly these three). Classic means the progression branch, not Classic Era. Requests for Era, Anniversary, PTR, beta, or private servers require a scope change, not silent substitution.
  3. Record selected targets, upstream commits, client/interface versions, feature requirements, and unresolved availability in the addon project's documentation. Keep installed plugin files read-only during ordinary addon work.

Ask about a UI mock-up before implementation

When the task creates or changes a visible addon UI, ask once before implementing it: "Would you like a UI mock-up before I start implementation, or should I implement it directly?" Offer "Mock-up first" and "Implement directly". Honor an existing answer, an explicit mock-up request, or an already accepted design without asking again. This question is not needed for work with no UI change.

Wait for the choice before writing the production UI; continue independent API research and project inspection while waiting. If a mock-up is requested, show a concrete layout with representative states and collect feedback before implementing that design. If declined, proceed directly. Use UI design and simulator testing for the mock-up handoff and UIForever workflow. A simulator prototype is optional; a static mock-up is valid when interactive tools or the target flavor are unavailable.

Preserve the accepted appearance

Visually inspect the accepted mock-up and follow visual fidelity: record its layout and asset plan, choose rendering techniques that reproduce it, and compare actual implementation screenshots against it. Use custom artwork with native text/input/hit regions when the design requires it; do not silently replace the artwork or styling with stock controls and built-in textures. Native controls must remain functional and respect target-specific security rules.

Compare a representative panel early, fix material differences, and repeat before claiming visual completion. Working controls and no Lua errors are not a visual pass. If capture or rendering is unavailable, report the visual comparison as not run; if the design cannot be reproduced, surface the concrete limitation and proposed alternative instead of redefining the accepted mock-up.

Research only the needed systems

Use wow-api-index to select domain skills. Each old domain reference is a historical Retail baseline unless a section supplies newer, target-specific evidence. Use compatibility guidance for differences.

Resolve the selected source branches to commits once per task, and use those commit-pinned sources throughout the task. Check generated API definitions, client-specific Lua/XML loading paths, events and payloads, argument/return types, and addon access restrictions. A name in a shared generated file is not proof that the feature loads for the selected client. Version-specific wiki pages supplement source evidence; they do not override the selected client.

Never fabricate a signature, silently substitute a Retail API into Forever/Classic, or declare an API removed on every client because Retail removed it. Function existence is only one compatibility check. If offline, disclose the bundled snapshot date/version and limit claims to verified evidence.

Implement for one or several clients

  • Preserve the addon's established architecture and requested features. Prefer event-driven Lua, addon-local namespaces, intentional globals, safe initialization, and explicit dependency loading.
  • For multiple targets, share core modules and isolate differing signatures and behavior in a small compatibility layer. Follow addon layout.
  • Produce a separate distributable for each selected target with the correct interface number and file load order. Do not require users to install multiple copies of the addon in one client's AddOns folder.
  • Determine security rules per target and context. Respect protected operations, combat lockdown, taint, and secret values where applicable. Do not attempt to reveal restricted data.
  • If a required capability is unavailable, report the affected target and propose a reduced feature or an explicit unsupported result. Do not silently return fabricated data or remove the target.
  • Reuse verified library APIs when appropriate. Create project-specific knowledge in the user's addon repository when it serves the requested work; never edit a cached marketplace installation to remember it.

Verify and deliver

Run relevant static checks and inspect each target's packaged TOC/file list. For UI changes, use UIForever simulator testing when the selected flavor and browser tools are available; record unsupported or unavailable simulator checks as not run. Use client validation for in-game acceptance. For fresh API captures, disputed availability or event probes, use runtime validation and keep source, presence, registration and operation results separate. Report selected targets, source commits, compatibility choices, mock-up choice, checks performed, unsupported features, and checks requiring a game client. Static checks and simulator passes do not prove in-game compatibility.

Use connected client testing when the agent actually has Witchcraft MCP or computer-use capabilities. Witchcraft supplies game context/errors; computer use can inspect and exercise the relevant UI in an authorized client session. Discover available tools, honor existing setup authorization, and keep context freshness, screenshots, interaction results and per-client acceptance separate. Neither capability is mandatory for hosts that lack it; provide reproducible steps and explicit not-run results instead of inventing tool access or success.

Bundled files

The model reads these on demand while the skill is loaded. They are exposed as readable files and are never executed.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Wow Addon Development AI skill do?

Design, build, debug, port, and package World of Warcraft addons for Retail, Forever, Classic progression, or any combination of these clients. Use for addon architecture, UI mock-ups and visual fidelity, UIForever testing, optional Witchcraft MCP and computer-use checks, Lua/XML/TOC implementation, compatibility, and release validation.

Why use Wow Addon Development on TypingMind?

Because you install it once and use it with any model. Wow Addon Development is plain Markdown rather than provider-specific code, so the same skill runs on GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model — and you can switch model mid-chat without it breaking. TypingMind runs on your own API keys, so you pay providers directly instead of a per-seat subscription, and your skills and chats stay in your own storage.

How do I install Wow Addon Development in TypingMind?

Open Plugins → Skills → Install from GitHub in TypingMind and paste https://github.com/JBurlison/WoWAddonAPIAgents/tree/main/plugins/wow-addon-dev/skills/wow-addon-development. TypingMind reads its SKILL.md and bundles its files and installs it as a skill you can enable per chat.

Which AI models can use Wow Addon Development?

Any model you connect in TypingMind. AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and local models can all load this skill when a request matches it.

How many AI models can I use with Wow Addon Development?

As many as you like. As long as a model supports skills, you can use Wow Addon Development with it — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama and more — all on TypingMind with your own API keys.

Is the Wow Addon Development AI skill free?

Yes. It is published on GitHub by JBurlison under the MIT license. You only pay your own AI provider for the tokens you use.

What are AI skills?

An AI skill is a reusable instruction bundle that teaches an AI model how to do one specific task. It follows the open Agent Skills format: a SKILL.md file with a name and description, plus any scripts, templates or reference files the model may need. The model reads the instructions only when your request matches the skill, so an installed skill costs nothing until it is used.

How are AI skills different from plugins or MCP servers?

A plugin or MCP server gives a model new tools to call — code that runs somewhere and returns a result. An AI skill gives the model knowledge and process instead: how to approach a task, which steps to follow, what good output looks like. Skills are plain Markdown, so they need no server, no API key and no runtime, and they work with any model.
