Signpost (not a knowledge pack) for maritime safety and class rules: SOLAS Consolidated Edition 2024 (IH110E) as the paywalled statutory core, ISM Code & Guidelines 2018 (ID117E), ISPS Code 2003 (K116E) and the 2021 guide (IB116E), and COLREGS 2026 (IC904E), with designation, edition, owner, status, and official URL only. Contains no source content. Free-path layers are US flag implementation (eCFR Title 46 and USCG circulars), the USCG Navigation Rules PDF, UK MCA notices under Open Government Licence v3.0, and class portals (DNV, ABS, Bureau Veritas). None of those layers is the IMO consolidated text. No in-repo pack covers these instruments.

  • Markdown instructions

A SKILL.md file the model loads on demand, so it only costs tokens when a request actually matches.

  • Works with any LLM

AI skills are plain Markdown, not provider-specific code, so this works with GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model.

  • 1 bundled files

Scripts, templates, and references the model can read while it works. Files are read-only and never executed.

  • Open source

Published by jgsystemsconsulting on GitHub. Read the source before you install it.

Installation

Install the Maritime Signpost AI skill in TypingMind to use it with any LLM, or drop it into another agent that reads SKILL.md.

1

Install in TypingMind

TypingMind installs a skill straight from its GitHub folder — it reads SKILL.md, bundles the resource files, and stores the result locally.

  1. Open the app and go to Plugins → Skills.
  2. Choose "Install from GitHub".
  3. Paste the skill folder URL below and confirm.
    https://github.com/jgsystemsconsulting/jgs-se-knowledge-packs/tree/main/packs/maritime-signpost
  4. Enable the skill in any chat where you want it available.
Plugins → Skills → Add skill → From GitHub URL, then paste the folder URL and press Continue.
2

Install in another agent

Any agent that reads the Agent Skills format can use this skill — copy the folder into that agent's skills directory.

Claude Code — .claude/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/jgsystemsconsulting/jgs-se-knowledge-packs.git /tmp/jgs-se-knowledge-packs
mkdir -p .claude/skills
cp -r /tmp/jgs-se-knowledge-packs/packs/maritime-signpost .claude/skills/maritime-signpost
Restart Claude Code after copying so it picks up the new skill.

Use it in TypingMind

Enable Maritime Signpost in any TypingMind chat and the model takes it from there. Its name and description sit in the system prompt, and the moment a request matches, the model loads the full instructions itself — you never invoke it by hand, and it costs no tokens until it is actually used.

The model loads Maritime Signpost on its own as soon as a request matches it.

Works with any AI model

AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so Maritime Signpost is not tied to the model it was written for. Install it once in TypingMind and use it with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, or a local model you run yourself — all on your own API keys.

  • Loaded only when it is needed

The system prompt carries just the name and description. The instructions are fetched on the first matching request, so an idle skill costs nothing.

  • Switch models mid-chat

Because the skill is instructions rather than code, changing model does not break it — the next model reads the same SKILL.md.

Skill instructions

This is the SKILL.md content the model loads. Read it before installing — a skill is instructions your model will follow.

Maritime Safety and Class Rules: Signpost (pointers only)

This is a signpost, not a knowledge pack. It carries no instrument text: no reproduced clauses, no normative paraphrase, no synthesised summaries of any IMO instrument or class rule. SOLAS, ISM, ISPS, and COLREGS as sold by IMO are paywalled sales publications, so they are Excluded under this repo's docs/SOURCE-VETTING.md and cannot be reconstituted into a redistributable pack. Class rules are free to read on society portals and remain society copyright. What this skill does: tell you which instrument you want, who sells it, and which free path covers the need. A free path is not the IMO statutory text. No in-repo pack covers these instruments.

When to use

You need to identify or cite a maritime safety instrument: which sales publication is the current SOLAS consolidated text, which free path covers US flag implementation, which free PDF covers collision rules, which UK notices cover flag guidance, and which class portal covers hull and machinery practice. IMO sales rows route you to the owner. US and UK rows route you to a government publisher. Class rows route you to a society portal. None of those routes is a substitute for the IMO consolidated text, and none names an in-repo pack.

Prerequisites: none, plain Markdown.

How to use

Find your instrument below. The Status column says whether it can be packaged:

  • Excluded: IMO sales publication or society-copyright class rule. No redistribution grant. Cannot be packaged here. Buy from the owner, or read on the owner's portal where the portal allows reading. Class-portal rows in table 4 are Excluded even though the portal is free to read. Free to read is not a redistribution grant.
  • Open: free to obtain from the publishing body: a government publisher (US or UK), or the IMO's own free orientation pages. No row in this signpost names an in-repo pack. SOLAS, ISM, ISPS, COLREGS, and class rules are not packaged in this catalogue. An Open row is a pointer to freely readable material. It is not the IMO statutory text.

Sales titles were confirmed on the IMO current-publications list on 2026-10-14. Cite SOLAS Consolidated Edition 2024 (IH110E), not 2020. Cite COLREGS 2026 Edition (IC904E) as the sales title. The free collision-rules text is the USCG Navigation Rules PDF, not the IMO book. Two USCG DCO URLs and the eCFR body were not retrieved by the research client (HTTP 403 or a bot gate). Those Title cells say so. Do not quote a date this file does not print. Reuse of IMO sales publications requires Organisation permission and is subject to royalty agreements: https://www.imo.org/en/publications/Pages/PermissionRequests.aspx . UK MCA notices default to Open Government Licence v3.0 unless a page says otherwise. The licence is worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, and non-exclusive, with the listed exemptions (personal data, logos, third-party rights), and this pack still points rather than excerpts: https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/ .

A reader who will not buy IMO books goes (1) to flag law and circulars (US eCFR Title 46 plus NVIC and MSC; UK MSN, MGN, and MIN), (2) to the USCG Navigation Rules PDF for collision rules, (3) to class-society portals for class practice, (4) to IMO free explainers for definitions and chapter maps only.

Scope & Limits

  • No reproduced instrument text. Rows carry designation, title, edition, owner, status, and URL only.
  • No in-repo pack is the open path. Do not send a reader to a NASA, rail, or space pack as a maritime equivalent.
  • SOLAS Consolidated Edition 2024 (IH110E) is the paywalled statutory core. The 2020 consolidated edition is not current.
  • ISM, ISPS, and the IMO COLREGS book are sales publications. IMO HTML explainers are orientation, not the codes.
  • USCG Navigation Rules are the free collision-rules text. They are the US amalgam, not IC904E.
  • eCFR Title 46 and USCG circulars are US flag implementation. They are not the SOLAS consolidated text. NVIC and MSC pages returned HTTP 403 to the research client. Re-check in a browser. Do not cite an NVIC number this file does not print.
  • UK MCA notices are free under OGL v3.0 unless a page says otherwise. They are UK implementation and operational guidance, not the SOLAS consolidated text. This pack points at the collections. It does not excerpt notices.
  • Class rules (DNV, ABS, Bureau Veritas) are free to read on society portals and remain society copyright. They are not public domain, not OGL, and not a SOLAS substitute.
  • Lloyd's Register rules URL and download terms were not confirmed. This signpost does not cite an LR rules page and does not claim LR rules are free PDFs.
  • No complete official SOLAS regulatory text is free from IMO.

The model reads these on demand while the skill is loaded. They are exposed as readable files and are never executed.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Maritime Signpost AI skill do?

Signpost (not a knowledge pack) for maritime safety and class rules: SOLAS Consolidated Edition 2024 (IH110E) as the paywalled statutory core, ISM Code & Guidelines 2018 (ID117E), ISPS Code 2003 (K116E) and the 2021 guide (IB116E), and COLREGS 2026 (IC904E), with designation, edition, owner, status, and official URL only. Why use Maritime Signpost on TypingMind?

Because you install it once and use it with any model. Maritime Signpost is plain Markdown rather than provider-specific code, so the same skill runs on GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model — and you can switch model mid-chat without it breaking. TypingMind runs on your own API keys, so you pay providers directly instead of a per-seat subscription, and your skills and chats stay in your own storage.

How do I install Maritime Signpost in TypingMind?

Open Plugins → Skills → Install from GitHub in TypingMind and paste https://github.com/jgsystemsconsulting/jgs-se-knowledge-packs/tree/main/packs/maritime-signpost. TypingMind reads its SKILL.md and bundles its files and installs it as a skill you can enable per chat.

Which AI models can use Maritime Signpost?

Any model you connect in TypingMind. AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and local models can all load this skill when a request matches it.

How many AI models can I use with Maritime Signpost?

As many as you like. As long as a model supports skills, you can use Maritime Signpost with it — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama and more — all on TypingMind with your own API keys.

Is the Maritime Signpost AI skill free?

It is published on GitHub by jgsystemsconsulting. Check the repository for licensing terms. You only pay your own AI provider for the tokens you use.

What are AI skills?

An AI skill is a reusable instruction bundle that teaches an AI model how to do one specific task. It follows the open Agent Skills format: a SKILL.md file with a name and description, plus any scripts, templates or reference files the model may need. The model reads the instructions only when your request matches the skill, so an installed skill costs nothing until it is used.

How are AI skills different from plugins or MCP servers?

A plugin or MCP server gives a model new tools to call — code that runs somewhere and returns a result. An AI skill gives the model knowledge and process instead: how to approach a task, which steps to follow, what good output looks like. Skills are plain Markdown, so they need no server, no API key and no runtime, and they work with any model.
