  • Markdown instructions

A SKILL.md file the model loads on demand, so it only costs tokens when a request actually matches.

  • Works with any LLM

AI skills are plain Markdown, not provider-specific code, so this works with GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model.

  • 4 bundled files

Scripts, templates, and references the model can read while it works. Files are read-only and never executed.

  • Open source

Published by machina-sports on GitHub. Read the source before you install it.

Installation

Install the Cbb Data AI skill in TypingMind to use it with any LLM, or drop it into another agent that reads SKILL.md.

1

Install in TypingMind

TypingMind installs a skill straight from its GitHub folder — it reads SKILL.md, bundles the resource files, and stores the result locally.

  1. Open the app and go to Plugins → Skills.
  2. Choose "Install from GitHub".
  3. Paste the skill folder URL below and confirm.
    https://github.com/machina-sports/sports-skills/tree/main/skills/cbb-data
  4. Enable the skill in any chat where you want it available.
Plugins → Skills → Add skill → From GitHub URL, then paste the folder URL and press Continue.
2

Install in another agent

Any agent that reads the Agent Skills format can use this skill — copy the folder into that agent's skills directory.

Claude Code — .claude/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/machina-sports/sports-skills.git /tmp/sports-skills
mkdir -p .claude/skills
cp -r /tmp/sports-skills/skills/cbb-data .claude/skills/cbb-data
Restart Claude Code after copying so it picks up the new skill.

Use it in TypingMind

Enable Cbb Data in any TypingMind chat and the model takes it from there. Its name and description sit in the system prompt, and the moment a request matches, the model loads the full instructions itself — you never invoke it by hand, and it costs no tokens until it is actually used.

The model loads Cbb Data on its own as soon as a request matches it.

Works with any AI model

AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so Cbb Data is not tied to the model it was written for. Install it once in TypingMind and use it with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, or a local model you run yourself — all on your own API keys.

  • Loaded only when it is needed

The system prompt carries just the name and description. The instructions are fetched on the first matching request, so an idle skill costs nothing.

  • Switch models mid-chat

Because the skill is instructions rather than code, changing model does not break it — the next model reads the same SKILL.md.

Skill instructions

This is the SKILL.md content the model loads. Read it before installing — a skill is instructions your model will follow.

College Basketball Data (CBB)

Before writing queries, consult references/api-reference.md for endpoints, conference IDs, team IDs, and data shapes.

Setup

Before first use, check if the CLI is available:

bash
which sports-skills || pip install sports-skills

If pip install fails with a Python version error, the package requires Python 3.10+. Find a compatible Python:

bash
python3 --version # check version
# If < 3.10, try: python3.12 -m pip install sports-skills
# On macOS with Homebrew: /opt/homebrew/bin/python3.12 -m pip install sports-skills

No API keys required.

Quick Start

Prefer the CLI — it avoids Python import path issues:

bash
sports-skills cbb get_scoreboard
sports-skills cbb get_rankings
sports-skills cbb get_standings --group=23

CRITICAL: Before Any Query

CRITICAL: Before calling any data endpoint, verify:

  • Season year is derived from the system prompt's currentDate — never hardcoded.
  • For standings, the group parameter is set to the correct conference ID (see references/api-reference.md).
  • If only a team name is provided, use get_teams to resolve the team ID.

Choosing the Season

Derive the current year from the system prompt's date (e.g., currentDate: 2026-02-28 → current year is 2026).

  • If the user specifies a season, use it as-is.
  • If the user says "current", "this season", or doesn't specify: The CBB season runs November–April. If the current month is November or December, use season = current_year + 1. If January–April, use season = current_year. If May–October (offseason), use season = current_year (most recently completed season).

Important: College vs. Pro Differences

  • Standings are per-conference — use the group parameter to filter
  • Rankings replace leaders — college uses AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll
  • Ranked teams have a rank field (null = unranked) on scoreboard competitors
  • 360+ D1 teams — many games per day during the season (50+ during conference play)
  • March Madness — NCAA Tournament runs in March/April with 68 teams

Official NCAA Backend

The get_ncaa_* commands read the NCAA's own endpoints (sdataprod.ncaa.com + ncaa.com) — coverage ESPN does not carry:

  • D2 and D3 scoreboards via division="d2"/"d3" — ESPN's college coverage is D1-centric.
  • Both scoreboards now return all of Division I by default — the ESPN-backed get_scoreboard/get_schedule previously inherited ESPN's Top-25-only un-grouped default (1 game on an ordinary Friday instead of ~24). Pass group explicitly for a narrower ESPN grouping.
  • The official March Madness bracket with live scores: get_ncaa_bracket.
  • Official game detail: get_ncaa_game, get_ncaa_boxscore, get_ncaa_play_by_play.
  • The schools index (~1,200 schools, all divisions): get_ncaa_schools.

NCAA game ids (from get_ncaa_scoreboard) and ESPN event ids share nothing — join on game date plus team names. NCAA reissues game ids, so take them from a fresh get_ncaa_scoreboard call rather than storing them. get_ncaa_bracket returns an error, not a placeholder bracket, when no game has teams: the 2020 tournaments were cancelled, and future brackets appear once the field is announced. All get_ncaa_* commands except get_ncaa_schools ride NCAA's GraphQL persisted queries, whose hashes rotate when ncaa.com redeploys; when that happens they say so explicitly, and the ESPN-backed get_scoreboard / get_schedule cover the same D1 games.

Commands that DO NOT exist — never call these

  • get_odds / get_betting_odds — not available. For prediction market odds, use the polymarket or kalshi skill.
  • search_teams — does not exist. Use get_teams instead.
  • get_box_score — does not exist. Use get_game_summary instead.
  • get_player_ratings — does not exist. Use get_player_stats instead.
  • get_ap_poll — does not exist. Use get_rankings instead.

If a command is not listed in the Commands table above, it does not exist.

Error Handling

When a command fails, do not surface raw errors to the user. Instead:

  1. If no events found, check if it's the off-season (CBB runs November–April)
  2. If standings are empty without a group filter, try a specific conference
  3. During March Madness, the scoreboard will have tournament games
  4. Only report failure with a clean message after exhausting alternatives

Troubleshooting

Error: sports-skills command not found Cause: Package not installed Solution: Run pip install sports-skills

Error: No games found on scoreboard Cause: CBB is seasonal (November–April); off-season scoreboard will be empty Solution: Use get_rankings or get_news year-round; check get_schedule for when the season resumes

Error: Too many games returned — hard to filter Cause: During the season, 50+ games per day are scheduled Solution: Use --group to filter by conference, or --limit to cap results

Error: Rankings empty Cause: Rankings are published weekly during the season (November–March) only Solution: Use get_news in the offseason; rankings resume in November

Bundled files

The model reads these on demand while the skill is loaded. They are exposed as readable files and are never executed.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Cbb Data AI skill do?

College Basketball (CBB) data via ESPN public endpoints and the NCAA's official endpoints — scores, standings, rosters, schedules, game summaries, play-by-play, win probability, rankings, futures, team/player stats, and news for Division I men's basketball, plus official D2/D3 scoreboards, NCAA game detail, the March Madness bracket with live scores, and the schools index. Use when: user asks about college basketball scores, March Madness, the NCAA tournament bracket, standings, rankings, team rosters, schedules, play-by-play, betting futures, team/player statistic...

Why use Cbb Data on TypingMind?

Because you install it once and use it with any model. Cbb Data is plain Markdown rather than provider-specific code, so the same skill runs on GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model — and you can switch model mid-chat without it breaking. TypingMind runs on your own API keys, so you pay providers directly instead of a per-seat subscription, and your skills and chats stay in your own storage.

How do I install Cbb Data in TypingMind?

Open Plugins → Skills → Install from GitHub in TypingMind and paste https://github.com/machina-sports/sports-skills/tree/main/skills/cbb-data. TypingMind reads its SKILL.md and bundles its files and installs it as a skill you can enable per chat.

Which AI models can use Cbb Data?

Any model you connect in TypingMind. AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and local models can all load this skill when a request matches it.

How many AI models can I use with Cbb Data?

As many as you like. As long as a model supports skills, you can use Cbb Data with it — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama and more — all on TypingMind with your own API keys.

Is the Cbb Data AI skill free?

Yes. It is published on GitHub by machina-sports under the MIT license. You only pay your own AI provider for the tokens you use.

What are AI skills?

An AI skill is a reusable instruction bundle that teaches an AI model how to do one specific task. It follows the open Agent Skills format: a SKILL.md file with a name and description, plus any scripts, templates or reference files the model may need. The model reads the instructions only when your request matches the skill, so an installed skill costs nothing until it is used.

How are AI skills different from plugins or MCP servers?

A plugin or MCP server gives a model new tools to call — code that runs somewhere and returns a result. An AI skill gives the model knowledge and process instead: how to approach a task, which steps to follow, what good output looks like. Skills are plain Markdown, so they need no server, no API key and no runtime, and they work with any model.
