  • Markdown instructions

A SKILL.md file the model loads on demand, so it only costs tokens when a request actually matches.

  • Works with any LLM

AI skills are plain Markdown, not provider-specific code, so this works with GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model.

  • 38 bundled files

Scripts, templates, and references the model can read while it works. Files are read-only and never executed.

  • Open source

Published by Mendiak on GitHub. Read the source before you install it.

Installation

Install the Less Is More Ui AI skill in TypingMind to use it with any LLM, or drop it into another agent that reads SKILL.md.

1

Install in TypingMind

TypingMind installs a skill straight from its GitHub folder — it reads SKILL.md, bundles the resource files, and stores the result locally.

  1. Open the app and go to Plugins → Skills.
  2. Choose "Install from GitHub".
  3. Paste the skill folder URL below and confirm.
    https://github.com/Mendiak/less-is-more-ui/tree/main
  4. Enable the skill in any chat where you want it available.
Plugins → Skills → Add skill → From GitHub URL, then paste the folder URL and press Continue.
2

Install in another agent

Any agent that reads the Agent Skills format can use this skill — copy the folder into that agent's skills directory.

Claude Code — .claude/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/Mendiak/less-is-more-ui.git \
  .claude/skills/less-is-more-ui
Restart Claude Code after copying so it picks up the new skill.

Use it in TypingMind

Enable Less Is More Ui in any TypingMind chat and the model takes it from there. Its name and description sit in the system prompt, and the moment a request matches, the model loads the full instructions itself — you never invoke it by hand, and it costs no tokens until it is actually used.

The model loads Less Is More Ui on its own as soon as a request matches it.

Works with any AI model

AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so Less Is More Ui is not tied to the model it was written for. Install it once in TypingMind and use it with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, or a local model you run yourself — all on your own API keys.

  • Loaded only when it is needed

The system prompt carries just the name and description. The instructions are fetched on the first matching request, so an idle skill costs nothing.

  • Switch models mid-chat

Because the skill is instructions rather than code, changing model does not break it — the next model reads the same SKILL.md.

Skill instructions

This is the SKILL.md content the model loads. Read it before installing — a skill is instructions your model will follow.

Less Is More UI

This skill helps AI agents design clean, functional, and calm web interfaces by applying universal design axioms.

The goal is to create interfaces where reduction is the primary value. Every element must be justified, or it must be removed.

Pillars of the Essential

1. Foundations (Origins)

Understand the philosophical roots of minimalist design. Detailed in docs/principles.md and docs/design-manifesto.md.

  • Miesian Clarity: Remove all decorative elements. Let the content speak.
  • Sullivan's Logic: Form follows function. Every element must reflect its purpose.
  • Müller-Brockmann's Grid: Construct the mathematical structure — columns, gutters, baseline — before styling. Placement is expressed as spans, not arbitrary widths.
  • Vignelli's Discipline: Use grids, type, scale, and alignment as a complete visual system.
  • Rams' Systemic Simplicity: Good design is understandable and unobtrusive.

2. Methodology (The Axioms)

Apply these universal laws (detailed in references/axioms.md) as your reasoning engine:

  1. Justification: Every pixel must earn its right to exist.
  2. Typographic Dominance: Typography is the interface. Use size and weight, not boxes.
  3. Material Honesty: No fake depth, shadows, or skeuomorphism.
  4. Proximity and Void: Whitespace is your most powerful structural tool.
  5. The Silent Grid: Alignment creates order without visible borders.
  6. Paradox of Choice: Limit options to increase clarity and intent.

3. Interface (Implementation)

Execute the "Subtractive Pass" and follow the process in docs/design-process.md:

  1. Identify Noise: Look for shadows, gradients, redundant icons, and decorative borders.
  2. Remove & Re-evaluate: Delete the noise. If the interface still functions, leave it out.
  3. Refine Typography: Compensate by improving typographic hierarchy and whitespace.

  • assets/css/reset.css: The mandatory modernist base for all CSS.
  • assets/css/style.css: The core implementation of the system's aesthetics.
  • references/tokens.css: The Essential Design System tokens. Always use these semantic variables instead of hardcoded hex values or generic units.
  • references/axioms.md: The logical foundation for design decisions.
  • references/grid.md: Grid construction, spans, baseline rhythm and responsive column reduction (Müller-Brockmann).
  • references/case-studies.md: Examples of noisy vs. essential patterns.
  • references/components.md: Minimalist code snippets using Essential tokens.
  • docs/principles.md: Deep dive into the philosophical foundations (Mies, Sullivan, Müller-Brockmann, Vignelli, Rams).
  • docs/design-manifesto.md: The high-level vision for calm and rational interfaces.
  • docs/design-process.md: Step-by-step methodology for building minimalist UIs.
  • docs/animations.md: Standards for subtle, functional micro-interactions.
  • docs/accessibility.md: How to maintain WCAG compliance without adding visual noise.
  • docs/typography.md: Modernist pairing guides for system and open-source fonts.
  • docs/responsive.md: How to handle smaller screens via reduction, not stacking.
  • docs/anti-patterns.md: Fast checklist of visual noise to remove.
  • docs/design-checklist.md: Final verification checklist before presenting a UI.

Load only the resources needed for the task. Start with references/axioms.md for reasoning, references/tokens.css before writing CSS, references/grid.md before laying out a page, and references/components.md before implementing buttons, forms, cards, navigation, or other interface primitives. Use index.html as a reference for the final visual quality expected.

When to Use This Skill

Use this skill for UI, frontend, and web design tasks where clarity, restraint, and professional polish matter. It is particularly effective for:

  • Building dashboards, internal tools, or data-heavy views.
  • Creating landing pages that need to feel professional, high-intent, and calm.
  • Simplifying complex user flows or refactoring "noisy" existing codebases.
  • Designing any layout where clarity and speed are prioritized over visual decoration.

Bundled files

The model reads these on demand while the skill is loaded. They are exposed as readable files and are never executed.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Less Is More Ui AI skill do?

Use when designing, refactoring, or reviewing web interfaces that should feel calm, precise, functional, and visually restrained. Applies minimalist UI principles inspired by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Louis Sullivan, Massimo Vignelli, Josef Müller-Brockmann, Dieter Rams, and Jony Ive, with emphasis on strong typography, structured layouts, semantic HTML, restrained motion, and removal of visual noise.

Why use Less Is More Ui on TypingMind?

Because you install it once and use it with any model. Less Is More Ui is plain Markdown rather than provider-specific code, so the same skill runs on GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model — and you can switch model mid-chat without it breaking. TypingMind runs on your own API keys, so you pay providers directly instead of a per-seat subscription, and your skills and chats stay in your own storage.

How do I install Less Is More Ui in TypingMind?

Open Plugins → Skills → Install from GitHub in TypingMind and paste https://github.com/Mendiak/less-is-more-ui/tree/main. TypingMind reads its SKILL.md and bundles its files and installs it as a skill you can enable per chat.

Which AI models can use Less Is More Ui?

Any model you connect in TypingMind. AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and local models can all load this skill when a request matches it.

How many AI models can I use with Less Is More Ui?

As many as you like. As long as a model supports skills, you can use Less Is More Ui with it — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama and more — all on TypingMind with your own API keys.

Is the Less Is More Ui AI skill free?

Yes. It is published on GitHub by Mendiak under the GPL-3.0 license. You only pay your own AI provider for the tokens you use.

What are AI skills?

An AI skill is a reusable instruction bundle that teaches an AI model how to do one specific task. It follows the open Agent Skills format: a SKILL.md file with a name and description, plus any scripts, templates or reference files the model may need. The model reads the instructions only when your request matches the skill, so an installed skill costs nothing until it is used.

How are AI skills different from plugins or MCP servers?

A plugin or MCP server gives a model new tools to call — code that runs somewhere and returns a result. An AI skill gives the model knowledge and process instead: how to approach a task, which steps to follow, what good output looks like. Skills are plain Markdown, so they need no server, no API key and no runtime, and they work with any model.
