cluster-upgrade

Plan, run and roll back a Kubernetes minor-version upgrade, EKS first. Finds removed APIs in Git, rendered Helm charts and the live cluster with pluto and EKS upgrade insights, checks add-on compatibility (VPC CNI, CoreDNS, kube-proxy, Karpenter, Flux, KEDA, admission webhooks) against the target version, finds PodDisruptionBudgets that block node drains, plans the node rotation per pool, and picks the right rollback, including EKS one-step version rollback within 7 days or a blue/green cluster. Use when asked to "upgrade the cluster to 1.x", "what breaks if we upgrade", "find deprecated APIs before the upgrade", "why is the node drain stuck", or "roll back the EKS upgrade". One PR diff with a deprecated API → /platform-skills:pr-review. Karpenter's own upgrade → /platform-skills:karpenter.

  • Markdown instructions

A SKILL.md file the model loads on demand, so it only costs tokens when a request actually matches.

  • Works with any LLM

AI skills are plain Markdown, not provider-specific code, so this works with GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model.

  • Self-contained

Everything the model needs lives in the instructions — no extra files to sync.

  • Open source

Published by nitinjain999 on GitHub. Read the source before you install it.

Installation

Install the Cluster Upgrade AI skill in TypingMind to use it with any LLM, or drop it into another agent that reads SKILL.md.

1

Install in TypingMind

TypingMind installs a skill straight from its GitHub folder — it reads SKILL.md, bundles the resource files, and stores the result locally.

  1. Open the app and go to Plugins → Skills.
  2. Choose "Install from GitHub".
  3. Paste the skill folder URL below and confirm.
    https://github.com/nitinjain999/platform-skills/tree/main/plugins/platform-skills/skills/cluster-upgrade
  4. Enable the skill in any chat where you want it available.
Plugins → Skills → Add skill → From GitHub URL, then paste the folder URL and press Continue.
2

Install in another agent

Any agent that reads the Agent Skills format can use this skill — copy the folder into that agent's skills directory.

Claude Code — .claude/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/nitinjain999/platform-skills.git /tmp/platform-skills
mkdir -p .claude/skills
cp -r /tmp/platform-skills/plugins/platform-skills/skills/cluster-upgrade .claude/skills/cluster-upgrade
Restart Claude Code after copying so it picks up the new skill.

Use it in TypingMind

Enable Cluster Upgrade in any TypingMind chat and the model takes it from there. Its name and description sit in the system prompt, and the moment a request matches, the model loads the full instructions itself — you never invoke it by hand, and it costs no tokens until it is actually used.

The model loads Cluster Upgrade on its own as soon as a request matches it.

Works with any AI model

AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so Cluster Upgrade is not tied to the model it was written for. Install it once in TypingMind and use it with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, or a local model you run yourself — all on your own API keys.

  • Loaded only when it is needed

The system prompt carries just the name and description. The instructions are fetched on the first matching request, so an idle skill costs nothing.

  • Switch models mid-chat

Because the skill is instructions rather than code, changing model does not break it — the next model reads the same SKILL.md.

Skill instructions

This is the SKILL.md content the model loads. Read it before installing — a skill is instructions your model will follow.

Upgrade a cluster one minor version without an outage, and know before starting how each step is undone.

Read references/cluster-upgrade.md before responding. It holds the scan commands for each place removed APIs hide, the add-on checks, the drain-blocker query, node rotation per pool type, the EKS rollback rules (one minor version, 7 days, in-place upgrades only) and blue/green as the fallback.

This skill is interactive by default. With no arguments, ask for the cluster platform (EKS, AKS, GKE, other), the current and target versions, how nodes are provisioned (managed node groups, Karpenter, self-managed, Auto Mode, Fargate) and how workloads are delivered (Flux, Argo CD, Helm, kubectl), then run plan. Never run update-cluster-version, update-nodegroup-version or a drain yourself: produce the commands, the checks and the rollback, and let the user run them.

Mode dispatch

ModeWhat it doesMutates anything?
planFull phased plan: scans, add-on order, drain blockers, control plane, node rotation, rollback per phaseNo
scanRemoved and deprecated APIs in Git, rendered Helm, deployed releases and the live API, plus EKS upgrade insightsNo
addonsAdd-on compatibility for the target version and the upgrade order (before or after the control plane)No
drainPDBs and pods that will block or lose data in a node drain, with fixesNo
rotateNode rotation plan per pool, smallest blast radius firstNo
rollbackThe right rollback for the phase and time elapsed: EKS version rollback, node pool rollback, add-on downgrade, or blue/greenNo
validatePost-phase checksNo

Mode: plan

  1. Confirm the jump is one minor version. If not, plan each step separately.
  2. Run scan, addons and drain and fold their findings into one ordered checklist.
  3. For each phase (APIs, add-ons, control plane, nodes), state the blast radius, the validation and the rollback.
  4. State the rollback window explicitly. On EKS: in-place rollback is available for 7 days after the upgrade completes and only to the previous minor version; after that, rollback means a blue/green cluster. If the plan needs a longer safety window, recommend blue/green from the start.

Mode: scan

Use the commands in the reference's Phase 1 table, all with --target-versions k8s=v<target>:

bash
pluto detect-files -d <repo dir> --target-versions k8s=v<target>
helm template <release> <chart> -f <values> | pluto detect - --target-versions k8s=v<target>
pluto detect-all-in-cluster -o wide --target-versions k8s=v<target>
aws eks list-insights --cluster-name <cluster> --filter '{"categories": ["UPGRADE_READINESS"]}'

Report each finding with where it lives (Git path, chart and value, or live object), its replacement apiVersion, and its owner. Flag live-only objects as ownerless: nothing will reconcile them after the upgrade.

Mode: addons

Query, never recall. For EKS managed add-ons use aws eks describe-addon-versions --kubernetes-version <target> --addon-name <name>; for Karpenter, Flux, KEDA, the mesh, CSI drivers and admission webhooks, read each project's compatibility matrix for the target version. Output one table: add-on, current version, minimum version supporting the target, upgrade before or after the control plane, rollback version.

Mode: drain

Run the PDB query from the reference. For each blocker, give the fix (replicas, maxUnavailable, selector, unhealthy workload) and the exact change. List bare pods and pods whose emptyDir data would be lost.

Mode: rotate

Per pool type, from the reference's Phase 5 table. Order pools by blast radius, smallest first. After each pool: no Pending pods, all nodes Ready, GitOps converged.

Mode: rollback

Ask what failed and when the control plane upgrade completed, then choose:

  • Node pool only: roll that pool back; keep the control plane.
  • Add-on only: downgrade the add-on.
  • Control plane, EKS, within 7 days, one step, in-place upgrade: EKS version rollback, in the reference's order: read ROLLBACK_READINESS insights, roll nodes back first, downgrade incompatible add-ons, then aws eks update-cluster-version --kubernetes-version <previous>. State what it does not undo: etcd objects at new apiVersions, add-on versions, node versions.
  • Anything else: blue/green. Traffic to a cluster at the old version, with a data plan for stateful workloads.

Never recommend --force without naming the specific insight it bypasses and why that insight is a false positive.

Mode: validate

Run the reference's validation block for the phase just finished and report each check as pass or fail.

Output format

Every mode ends with:

  • Findings or plan, with exact commands and files
  • Blast radius, in one line per phase
  • Validation, as commands
  • Rollback, for the phase in question, including whether in-place rollback is still available

Frequently asked questions

What does the Cluster Upgrade AI skill do?

Why use Cluster Upgrade on TypingMind?

Because you install it once and use it with any model. Cluster Upgrade is plain Markdown rather than provider-specific code, so the same skill runs on GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model — and you can switch model mid-chat without it breaking. TypingMind runs on your own API keys, so you pay providers directly instead of a per-seat subscription, and your skills and chats stay in your own storage.

How do I install Cluster Upgrade in TypingMind?

Open Plugins → Skills → Install from GitHub in TypingMind and paste https://github.com/nitinjain999/platform-skills/tree/main/plugins/platform-skills/skills/cluster-upgrade. TypingMind reads its SKILL.md and installs it as a skill you can enable per chat.

Which AI models can use Cluster Upgrade?

Any model you connect in TypingMind. AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and local models can all load this skill when a request matches it.

How many AI models can I use with Cluster Upgrade?

As many as you like. As long as a model supports skills, you can use Cluster Upgrade with it — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama and more — all on TypingMind with your own API keys.

Is the Cluster Upgrade AI skill free?

Yes. It is published on GitHub by nitinjain999 under the Apache-2.0 license. You only pay your own AI provider for the tokens you use.

What are AI skills?

An AI skill is a reusable instruction bundle that teaches an AI model how to do one specific task. It follows the open Agent Skills format: a SKILL.md file with a name and description, plus any scripts, templates or reference files the model may need. The model reads the instructions only when your request matches the skill, so an installed skill costs nothing until it is used.

How are AI skills different from plugins or MCP servers?

A plugin or MCP server gives a model new tools to call — code that runs somewhere and returns a result. An AI skill gives the model knowledge and process instead: how to approach a task, which steps to follow, what good output looks like. Skills are plain Markdown, so they need no server, no API key and no runtime, and they work with any model.
