  • Markdown instructions

    A SKILL.md file the model loads on demand, so it only costs tokens when a request actually matches.

  • Works with any LLM

    AI skills are plain Markdown, not provider-specific code, so this works with GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model.

  • 12 bundled files

    Scripts, templates, and references the model can read while it works. Files are read-only and never executed.

  • Open source

    Published by NVlabs on GitHub. Read the source before you install it.

Installation

Install the Alterlab Aeon AI skill in TypingMind to use it with any LLM, or drop it into another agent that reads SKILL.md.

1

Install in TypingMind

TypingMind installs a skill straight from its GitHub folder — it reads SKILL.md, bundles the resource files, and stores the result locally.

  1. Open the app and go to Plugins → Skills.
  2. Choose "Install from GitHub".
  3. Paste the skill folder URL below and confirm.
    https://github.com/NVlabs/Skill2Env/tree/main/SkillHub/skills/alterlab-aeon
  4. Enable the skill in any chat where you want it available.
Plugins → Skills → Add skill → From GitHub URL, then paste the folder URL and press Continue.
2

Install in another agent

Any agent that reads the Agent Skills format can use this skill — copy the folder into that agent's skills directory.

Claude Code — .claude/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/NVlabs/Skill2Env.git /tmp/Skill2Env
mkdir -p .claude/skills
cp -r /tmp/Skill2Env/SkillHub/skills/alterlab-aeon .claude/skills/alterlab-aeon
Restart Claude Code after copying so it picks up the new skill.

Use it in TypingMind

Enable Alterlab Aeon in any TypingMind chat and the model takes it from there. Its name and description sit in the system prompt, and the moment a request matches, the model loads the full instructions itself — you never invoke it by hand, and it costs no tokens until it is actually used.

The model loads Alterlab Aeon on its own as soon as a request matches it.

Works with any AI model

AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so Alterlab Aeon is not tied to the model it was written for. Install it once in TypingMind and use it with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, or a local model you run yourself — all on your own API keys.

  • Loaded only when it is needed

    The system prompt carries just the name and description. The instructions are fetched on the first matching request, so an idle skill costs nothing.

  • Switch models mid-chat

    Because the skill is instructions rather than code, changing model does not break it — the next model reads the same SKILL.md.

Skill instructions

This is the SKILL.md content the model loads. Read it before installing — a skill is instructions your model will follow.

Aeon Time Series Machine Learning

Overview

Aeon is a scikit-learn compatible Python toolkit for time series machine learning. It provides state-of-the-art algorithms for classification, regression, clustering, forecasting, anomaly detection, segmentation, and similarity search.

When to Use This Skill

Apply this skill when:

  • Classifying or predicting from time series data
  • Detecting anomalies or change points in temporal sequences
  • Clustering similar time series patterns
  • Forecasting future values
  • Finding repeated patterns (motifs) or unusual subsequences (discords)
  • Comparing time series with specialized distance metrics
  • Extracting features from temporal data

Installation

bash
uv pip install "aeon>=1.4"

Module layout below targets aeon 1.x. Import paths changed across the 0.x→1.x reorg (e.g. forecasters moved under aeon.forecasting.stats, series anomaly detectors under aeon.anomaly_detection.series.*); if an import fails, check the current API reference rather than assuming an older path.

Core Capabilities

1. Time Series Classification

Categorize time series into predefined classes. See references/classification.md for complete algorithm catalog.

Quick Start:

python
from aeon.classification.convolution_based import RocketClassifier
from aeon.datasets import load_classification

# Load data
X_train, y_train = load_classification("GunPoint", split="train")
X_test, y_test = load_classification("GunPoint", split="test")

# Train classifier
clf = RocketClassifier(n_kernels=10000)
clf.fit(X_train, y_train)
accuracy = clf.score(X_test, y_test)

Algorithm Selection:

  • Speed + Performance: MiniRocketClassifier, Arsenal
  • Maximum Accuracy: HIVECOTEV2, InceptionTimeClassifier
  • Interpretability: ShapeletTransformClassifier, Catch22Classifier
  • Small Datasets: KNeighborsTimeSeriesClassifier with DTW distance

2. Time Series Regression

Predict continuous values from time series. See references/regression.md for algorithms.

Quick Start:

python
from aeon.regression.convolution_based import RocketRegressor
from aeon.datasets import load_regression

X_train, y_train = load_regression("Covid3Month", split="train")
X_test, y_test = load_regression("Covid3Month", split="test")

reg = RocketRegressor()
reg.fit(X_train, y_train)
predictions = reg.predict(X_test)

3. Time Series Clustering

Group similar time series without labels. See references/clustering.md for methods.

Quick Start:

python
from aeon.clustering import TimeSeriesKMeans

clusterer = TimeSeriesKMeans(
    n_clusters=3,
    distance="dtw",
    averaging_method="ba"
)
labels = clusterer.fit_predict(X_train)
centers = clusterer.cluster_centers_

4. Forecasting

Predict future time series values. See references/forecasting.md for forecasters.

Quick Start:

python
from aeon.forecasting.stats import ARIMA

# Orders are separate args (p, d, q) — not an `order` tuple.
forecaster = ARIMA(p=1, d=1, q=1)
forecaster.fit(y_train)

# predict() / forecast() return ONE value: self.horizon steps ahead (default 1).
next_step = forecaster.predict()

# For a multi-step path, use iterative_forecast (returns a 1D ndarray):
y_pred = forecaster.iterative_forecast(y_train, prediction_horizon=5)

5. Anomaly Detection

Identify unusual patterns or outliers. See references/anomaly_detection.md for detectors.

Quick Start:

python
import numpy as np
from aeon.anomaly_detection.series.distance_based import STOMP

detector = STOMP(window_size=50)
anomaly_scores = detector.fit_predict(y)

# Higher scores indicate anomalies
threshold = np.percentile(anomaly_scores, 95)
anomalies = anomaly_scores > threshold

6. Segmentation

Partition time series into regions with change points. See references/segmentation.md.

Quick Start:

python
from aeon.segmentation import ClaSPSegmenter

segmenter = ClaSPSegmenter()
change_points = segmenter.fit_predict(y)

7. Similarity Search

Find similar patterns within or across time series. See references/similarity_search.md.

Quick Start:

python
from aeon.similarity_search.series.motifs import StompMotif

# Find recurring patterns
motif_finder = StompMotif(window_size=50, k=3)
motifs = motif_finder.fit_predict(y)

Feature Extraction and Transformations

Common Workflows

Classification Pipeline

python
from aeon.transformations.collection import Normalizer
from aeon.classification.convolution_based import RocketClassifier
from sklearn.pipeline import Pipeline

pipeline = Pipeline([
    ('normalize', Normalizer()),
    ('classify', RocketClassifier())
])

# Train traditional ML
clf = GradientBoostingClassifier()
clf.fit(X_train_features, y_train)
predictions = clf.predict(X_test_features)

Anomaly Detection with Visualization

python
import numpy as np
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
from aeon.anomaly_detection.series.distance_based import STOMP

detector = STOMP(window_size=50)
scores = detector.fit_predict(y)

plt.figure(figsize=(15, 5))
plt.subplot(2, 1, 1)
plt.plot(y, label='Time Series')
plt.subplot(2, 1, 2)
plt.plot(scores, label='Anomaly Scores', color='red')
plt.axhline(np.percentile(scores, 95), color='k', linestyle='--')
plt.show()

Best Practices

Data Preparation

  1. Normalize: Most algorithms benefit from z-normalization

    python
    from aeon.transformations.collection import Normalizer
    normalizer = Normalizer()
    X_train = normalizer.fit_transform(X_train)
    X_test = normalizer.transform(X_test)
  2. Handle Missing Values: Impute before analysis

    python
    from aeon.transformations.collection import SimpleImputer
    imputer = SimpleImputer(strategy='mean')
    X_train = imputer.fit_transform(X_train)
  3. Check Data Format: Aeon expects shape (n_samples, n_channels, n_timepoints)

Model Selection

  1. Start Simple: Begin with ROCKET variants before deep learning
  2. Use Validation: Split training data for hyperparameter tuning
  3. Compare Baselines: Test against simple methods (1-NN Euclidean, Naive)
  4. Consider Resources: ROCKET for speed, deep learning if GPU available

Frequently asked questions

What does the Alterlab Aeon AI skill do?

Runs time series machine learning with the aeon library — classification, regression, clustering, forecasting, anomaly detection, segmentation, and similarity search via scikit-learn compatible APIs. Use when working with temporal data, sequential patterns, or time-indexed observations (univariate or multivariate) that need specialized algorithms beyond standard ML approaches. Part of the AlterLab Academic Skills suite.

Why use Alterlab Aeon on TypingMind?

Because you install it once and use it with any model. Alterlab Aeon is plain Markdown rather than provider-specific code, so the same skill runs on GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model — and you can switch model mid-chat without it breaking. TypingMind runs on your own API keys, so you pay providers directly instead of a per-seat subscription, and your skills and chats stay in your own storage.

How do I install Alterlab Aeon in TypingMind?

Open Plugins → Skills → Install from GitHub in TypingMind and paste https://github.com/NVlabs/Skill2Env/tree/main/SkillHub/skills/alterlab-aeon. TypingMind reads its SKILL.md and bundles its files and installs it as a skill you can enable per chat.

Which AI models can use Alterlab Aeon?

Any model you connect in TypingMind. AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and local models can all load this skill when a request matches it.

How many AI models can I use with Alterlab Aeon?

As many as you like. As long as a model supports skills, you can use Alterlab Aeon with it — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama and more — all on TypingMind with your own API keys.

Is the Alterlab Aeon AI skill free?

Yes. It is published on GitHub by NVlabs under the MIT license. You only pay your own AI provider for the tokens you use.

What are AI skills?

An AI skill is a reusable instruction bundle that teaches an AI model how to do one specific task. It follows the open Agent Skills format: a SKILL.md file with a name and description, plus any scripts, templates or reference files the model may need. The model reads the instructions only when your request matches the skill, so an installed skill costs nothing until it is used.

How are AI skills different from plugins or MCP servers?

A plugin or MCP server gives a model new tools to call — code that runs somewhere and returns a result. An AI skill gives the model knowledge and process instead: how to approach a task, which steps to follow, what good output looks like. Skills are plain Markdown, so they need no server, no API key and no runtime, and they work with any model.
