qa-do

Route a plain-language QA situation to the next 1-2 skills, then carry out the requested workflow with evidence and a readable report. Use ONLY when the request does not match any other skill's trigger phrases. Use when: "which skill should I use," "where do I start," "validate this app," "run QA and report," "/qa-do," or any vague QA situation that doesn't map to one skill. Not for: bootstrapping a brand-new project with no QA — use qa-start. Not for: capturing project setup/context — use qa-project-context. If the request clearly matches another skill, invoke that skill directly instead of routing through here. Related: qa-start, qa-project-context, test-strategy.

  • Markdown instructions

A SKILL.md file the model loads on demand, so it only costs tokens when a request actually matches.

  • Works with any LLM

AI skills are plain Markdown, not provider-specific code, so this works with GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model.

  • Self-contained

Everything the model needs lives in the instructions — no extra files to sync.

  • Open source

Published by petrkindlmann on GitHub. Read the source before you install it.

Installation

Install the Qa Do AI skill in TypingMind to use it with any LLM, or drop it into another agent that reads SKILL.md.

1

Install in TypingMind

TypingMind installs a skill straight from its GitHub folder — it reads SKILL.md, bundles the resource files, and stores the result locally.

  1. Open the app and go to Plugins → Skills.
  2. Choose "Install from GitHub".
  3. Paste the skill folder URL below and confirm.
    https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills/tree/main/skills/qa-do
  4. Enable the skill in any chat where you want it available.
Plugins → Skills → Add skill → From GitHub URL, then paste the folder URL and press Continue.
2

Install in another agent

Any agent that reads the Agent Skills format can use this skill — copy the folder into that agent's skills directory.

Claude Code — .claude/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills.git /tmp/qa-skills
mkdir -p .claude/skills
cp -r /tmp/qa-skills/skills/qa-do .claude/skills/qa-do
Restart Claude Code after copying so it picks up the new skill.

Use it in TypingMind

Enable Qa Do in any TypingMind chat and the model takes it from there. Its name and description sit in the system prompt, and the moment a request matches, the model loads the full instructions itself — you never invoke it by hand, and it costs no tokens until it is actually used.

The model loads Qa Do on its own as soon as a request matches it.

Works with any AI model

AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so Qa Do is not tied to the model it was written for. Install it once in TypingMind and use it with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, or a local model you run yourself — all on your own API keys.

  • Loaded only when it is needed

The system prompt carries just the name and description. The instructions are fetched on the first matching request, so an idle skill costs nothing.

  • Switch models mid-chat

Because the skill is instructions rather than code, changing model does not break it — the next model reads the same SKILL.md.

Skill instructions

This is the SKILL.md content the model loads. Read it before installing — a skill is instructions your model will follow.

Discovery Questions

Check .agents/qa-project-context.md first. Inspect the project manifest, tests, current changes, configured target, and available tools before asking anything. Ask only for a missing target or requirement that changes the requested work.

Core Principles

  1. Route to the most precise skill, not the nearest neighbor. A vague match to a broad skill is worse than a direct hit on a narrow one. "Reproduce this bug" goes to bug-reproduction, not the broader ai-bug-triage; "test our Stripe checkout" goes to payment-testing, not generic api-testing. When in doubt, prefer the skill whose trigger phrases name the exact artifact in the request.

  2. One or two skills, in order — never a pile. Output at most two skills. A second skill earns its place only when the first leaves a clear gap (diagnose → measure, risk → checklist). If one skill covers the request, say "Direct" and execute it. Routing to three skills means the situation is ambiguous — ask a clarifying question instead.

  3. The routing table is the source of truth, and it goes stale. This router is uniquely prone to drift: every skill added to skills/ is a row that may be missing here. Regenerate the table and the Skill Categories reference against skills/ whenever a skill is added or removed. If a request has no row, fall back to the closest category in the Quick Reference rather than forcing a wrong direct match.

How to Use

Describe what you're trying to do or what problem you're facing — a sentence or two is enough. The router outputs the recommended skill(s) (1-2, in order) and one line per skill explaining the role it plays. Example: "Our E2E tests keep failing in CI but pass locally." → test-reliability (diagnose flaky/environment-sensitive tests), then ci-cd-integration (align the pipeline environment with local behavior).

Execute an Application Check

When the full repository is available, use its bounded runner. Resolve <qa-skills> to this checkout and <project> to the application, even when the working directory differs.

bash
node <qa-skills>/scripts/qa.mjs plan --project <project> --goal "<user goal>"
node <qa-skills>/scripts/qa.mjs run --project <project> --goal "<user goal>"

Read the primary skill and next relevant skill in the plan, then perform their workflows. The runner discovers available test commands and writes report.html, result.json, logs, and a host handoff. A plan is not an executed test. Where only individual skills are installed, execute their recipes directly and retain equivalent evidence.

For URL checks, use a concrete target and application-owned readiness selector. Run the configured checks without treating optional missing integrations as a reason to stop unrelated local work. A missing browser, unavailable target, no observed tests, or an unreadable test result remains blocked or incomplete. Preserve skipped cases.

For a failure, reproduce it, preserve its assertion, and apply a repair only when it is within the user's task. Execute again after changing the code. Stop after two attempts if the failure persists and report the exact blocker; do not weaken an assertion or retry indefinitely. The report covers executed checks, not universal correctness. See the repository's docs/QA-RUNNER.md for configuration and host integration.

When the Situation is Ambiguous

If a description maps to three or more skills with equal weight, one clarifying question narrows it down. Answer it and the router reduces to 1-2 skills.

  • "Are you fixing something broken, or building new coverage from scratch?"
  • "Is this a process problem (how the team works) or a tooling problem (what's running)?"
  • "Is the priority speed of delivery, or confidence in correctness?"
  • "Are you the only QA, or is this a team-wide change?"

Disambiguation pairs (the four overlaps to resolve, not guess)

  • test-reliability vs selector-drift-recovery — one flaky test healed at runtime → test-reliability; many selectors broken by a planned UI refactor → selector-drift-recovery.
  • cross-browser-testing vs mobile-testing — browsers/CSS engines → cross-browser-testing; real devices, Appium/Detox/Maestro, gestures/deep links → mobile-testing.
  • ai-bug-triage vs bug-reproduction — classify/dedupe a batch of CI failures → ai-bug-triage; reproduce and understand one specific bug → bug-reproduction.
  • qa-start vs qa-project-bootstrap — brand-new project, no QA yet → qa-start; onboarding a QA engineer to an existing codebase → qa-project-bootstrap.

Anti-Patterns

  • Routing to a broad skill when a precise one exists. "Reproduce this bug" → routing to ai-bug-triage (batch classification) instead of bug-reproduction (single verified repro). Fix: match the exact artifact in the request to the skill that names it.
  • Stacking three or more skills on one situation. That signals ambiguity, not thoroughness. Fix: ask one clarifying question and reduce to 1-2.
  • Trusting a stale table. If a recently added skill has no row, the router silently mis-routes to a weaker neighbor. Fix: regenerate the table from skills/ (Core Principle 3) and fall back to the closest Quick Reference category rather than forcing a wrong match.
  • Grabbing a request that belongs to a named sibling. "Set up QA on a new project" is qa-start; "capture project context" is qa-project-context. qa-do is last resort only.

Done When

  • The next 1-2 skills are named with reasons tied to the current task.
  • An action request has executed checks or a specific recorded blocker.
  • The report identifies the target, source revision, command, outcome, and remaining gaps.
  • Authored, executed, failed, skipped, blocked, and unrun checks are distinguishable.

Related Skills

  • qa-start — the sibling most confused with this one. Use it (not qa-do) when starting QA on a brand-new project with no QA in place; it chains context → strategy → planning.
  • qa-project-context — capture project setup before using most skills; every skill checks for it first. Route here, don't reimplement it.
  • test-strategy — when the situation is "we need a QA strategy" rather than a specific problem to route.

Why use Qa Do on TypingMind?

Because you install it once and use it with any model. Qa Do is plain Markdown rather than provider-specific code, so the same skill runs on GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model — and you can switch model mid-chat without it breaking. TypingMind runs on your own API keys, so you pay providers directly instead of a per-seat subscription, and your skills and chats stay in your own storage.

How do I install Qa Do in TypingMind?

Open Plugins → Skills → Install from GitHub in TypingMind and paste https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills/tree/main/skills/qa-do. TypingMind reads its SKILL.md and installs it as a skill you can enable per chat.

Which AI models can use Qa Do?

Any model you connect in TypingMind. AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and local models can all load this skill when a request matches it.

How many AI models can I use with Qa Do?

As many as you like. As long as a model supports skills, you can use Qa Do with it — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama and more — all on TypingMind with your own API keys.

Is the Qa Do AI skill free?

Yes. It is published on GitHub by petrkindlmann under the MIT license. You only pay your own AI provider for the tokens you use.

What are AI skills?

An AI skill is a reusable instruction bundle that teaches an AI model how to do one specific task. It follows the open Agent Skills format: a SKILL.md file with a name and description, plus any scripts, templates or reference files the model may need. The model reads the instructions only when your request matches the skill, so an installed skill costs nothing until it is used.

How are AI skills different from plugins or MCP servers?

A plugin or MCP server gives a model new tools to call — code that runs somewhere and returns a result. An AI skill gives the model knowledge and process instead: how to approach a task, which steps to follow, what good output looks like. Skills are plain Markdown, so they need no server, no API key and no runtime, and they work with any model.
