  • Markdown instructions

A SKILL.md file the model loads on demand, so it only costs tokens when a request actually matches.

  • Works with any LLM

AI skills are plain Markdown, not provider-specific code, so this works with GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model.

  • Self-contained

Everything the model needs lives in the instructions — no extra files to sync.

  • Open source

Published by RedHatProductSecurity on GitHub. Read the source before you install it.

Installation

Install the Operator Security AI skill in TypingMind to use it with any LLM, or drop it into another agent that reads SKILL.md.

1

Install in TypingMind

TypingMind installs a skill straight from its GitHub folder — it reads SKILL.md, bundles the resource files, and stores the result locally.

  1. Open the app and go to Plugins → Skills.
  2. Choose "Install from GitHub".
  3. Paste the skill folder URL below and confirm.
    https://github.com/RedHatProductSecurity/prodsec-skills/tree/main/module/skills/operator-security
  4. Enable the skill in any chat where you want it available.
Plugins → Skills → Add skill → From GitHub URL, then paste the folder URL and press Continue.
2

Install in another agent

Any agent that reads the Agent Skills format can use this skill — copy the folder into that agent's skills directory.

Claude Code — .claude/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/RedHatProductSecurity/prodsec-skills.git /tmp/prodsec-skills
mkdir -p .claude/skills
cp -r /tmp/prodsec-skills/module/skills/operator-security .claude/skills/operator-security
Restart Claude Code after copying so it picks up the new skill.

Use it in TypingMind

Enable Operator Security in any TypingMind chat and the model takes it from there. Its name and description sit in the system prompt, and the moment a request matches, the model loads the full instructions itself — you never invoke it by hand, and it costs no tokens until it is actually used.

The model loads Operator Security on its own as soon as a request matches it.

Works with any AI model

AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so Operator Security is not tied to the model it was written for. Install it once in TypingMind and use it with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, or a local model you run yourself — all on your own API keys.

  • Loaded only when it is needed

The system prompt carries just the name and description. The instructions are fetched on the first matching request, so an idle skill costs nothing.

  • Switch models mid-chat

Because the skill is instructions rather than code, changing model does not break it — the next model reads the same SKILL.md.

Skill instructions

This is the SKILL.md content the model loads. Read it before installing — a skill is instructions your model will follow.

Kubernetes Operator Security

Secure Operator manifests, OLM packaging, CRD governance, and runtime configuration for least-privilege operation.

Design Principles

Minimize Scope

  • Restrict cluster-scope and namespace-scope permissions to the minimum required for the Operator to function
  • Justify every cluster-scoped permission; move static cluster-scoped resource creation to the OLM catalog when possible
  • Use OperatorGroup to specify the set of namespaces the Operator manages

Namespace Isolation

  • Deploy the Operator in a separate namespace from its operands
  • Never deploy Operators in namespaces shared with non-privileged users
  • Ensure non-privileged users cannot read Secrets in the Operator's namespace

Fine-Grained Roles

  • Prefer many small Roles with granular permissions over a few broad Roles
  • Each Role should grant the minimum verbs and resources needed for a single responsibility

RBAC Requirements

RuleRationale
No wildcards -- list every verb and resource explicitlyWildcards grant permissions to resources that may not exist yet
No cluster-adminGrants unrestricted access to the entire cluster
No self-escalating RBACRoles must not grant the ability to create or modify their own RoleBindings
No Escalate verbAllows circumventing RBAC restrictions
No Bind verb in role definitionsAllows binding to roles with higher privileges

Container Security

  • Set a numeric USER in the Containerfile; never default to or assume uid=0
  • Accept the high UID (billion+) that OpenShift assigns to the namespace
  • Set readOnlyRootFilesystem: true
  • Set runAsNonRoot: true
  • Set automountServiceAccountToken: false unless the SA token is actually needed
  • Never require host paths unless the Operator is part of the control plane
  • Set no-new-privileges: true in the security context
  • Use group ID permissions for shared file access instead of user ID

OLM Installation

Installation Source

Operators must be installed via the Operator Lifecycle Manager (OLM). Direct deployment of operator pods bypasses OLM's dependency resolution, upgrade management, and security controls.

Required for: Telco (mandatory), Far-Edge (mandatory), Extended (mandatory), Non-Telco (optional)

Installation Status

Operators must report a Succeeded installation status. Failed or pending installations indicate packaging or dependency issues.

Required for: Telco (mandatory), Far-Edge (mandatory), Extended (mandatory), Non-Telco (optional)

No SCC Privileges

Operators must not require Security Context Constraint (SCC) access privileges during installation.

Required for: Telco (mandatory), Far-Edge (mandatory), Extended (mandatory), Non-Telco (optional)

No Duplicate Operators

Only one instance of the same operator CSV should exist per cluster.

Required for: Telco (mandatory), Far-Edge (mandatory), Extended (mandatory), Non-Telco (optional)

CRD Governance

OpenAPI Schema

All Custom Resource Definitions must include an OpenAPI v3 schema specification. This enables validation of custom resources at admission time.

Required for: Telco (mandatory), Far-Edge (mandatory), Extended (mandatory), Non-Telco (optional)

CRD Versioning

CRDs must have valid versioning with proper served/storage version configuration.

Required for: Telco (mandatory), Far-Edge (mandatory), Extended (mandatory), Non-Telco (optional)

Semantic Versioning

Operators must use semantic versioning (semver) for their CSV version.

Required for: Telco (mandatory), Far-Edge (mandatory), Extended (mandatory), Non-Telco (optional)

Single CRD Owner

Each CRD must be owned by only one operator. Multiple operators claiming ownership of the same CRD creates conflict and unpredictable behavior.

Required for: Telco (mandatory), Far-Edge (mandatory), Extended (mandatory), Non-Telco (optional)

Catalog Source Management

Bundle Count

Catalog sources must contain fewer than 1000 bundles. Large catalogs degrade OLM performance and increase memory consumption.

Required for: all profiles (optional, recommended best practice)

OLM Skip Range

Operators with multiple versions in a catalog must have a valid OLM skip range configured to enable proper upgrade paths.

Required for: all profiles (optional, recommended best practice)

Namespace Scoping

Tenant namespaces can only contain operators with SingleNamespaced or MultiNamespaced install modes. Cluster-scoped operators should not be installed in tenant namespaces.

Required for: all profiles (optional, recommended best practice)

Resource Constraints

Operator pods must not enable hugepages. Hugepage allocation is a node-level resource that should be reserved for application workloads, not operator infrastructure.

Required for: Telco (mandatory), Far-Edge (mandatory), Extended (mandatory), Non-Telco (optional)

Implementation Checklist

  • Containerfile sets a numeric non-root USER
  • readOnlyRootFilesystem: true is set
  • runAsNonRoot: true is set
  • automountServiceAccountToken: false unless required
  • No host path mounts unless justified (control plane only)
  • OperatorGroup is used to scope namespace access
  • Operator is installed via OLM
  • Operator reports Succeeded installation status
  • No SCC privileges required during installation
  • Only one instance of the operator CSV per cluster
  • All CRDs have OpenAPI v3 schema
  • CRDs have valid versioning configuration
  • Operator uses semantic versioning
  • Each CRD is owned by only one operator
  • Catalog source has fewer than 1000 bundles

Frequently asked questions

What does the Operator Security AI skill do?

Enforce least-privilege RBAC and secure runtime configuration for Kubernetes Operators. Use when building, reviewing, or auditing Operator manifests, ClusterRoles, Roles, OLM bundles, or CRD definitions.

Why use Operator Security on TypingMind?

Because you install it once and use it with any model. Operator Security is plain Markdown rather than provider-specific code, so the same skill runs on GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model — and you can switch model mid-chat without it breaking. TypingMind runs on your own API keys, so you pay providers directly instead of a per-seat subscription, and your skills and chats stay in your own storage.

How do I install Operator Security in TypingMind?

Open Plugins → Skills → Install from GitHub in TypingMind and paste https://github.com/RedHatProductSecurity/prodsec-skills/tree/main/module/skills/operator-security. TypingMind reads its SKILL.md and installs it as a skill you can enable per chat.

Which AI models can use Operator Security?

Any model you connect in TypingMind. AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and local models can all load this skill when a request matches it.

How many AI models can I use with Operator Security?

As many as you like. As long as a model supports skills, you can use Operator Security with it — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama and more — all on TypingMind with your own API keys.

Is the Operator Security AI skill free?

Yes. It is published on GitHub by RedHatProductSecurity under the Apache-2.0 license. You only pay your own AI provider for the tokens you use.

What are AI skills?

An AI skill is a reusable instruction bundle that teaches an AI model how to do one specific task. It follows the open Agent Skills format: a SKILL.md file with a name and description, plus any scripts, templates or reference files the model may need. The model reads the instructions only when your request matches the skill, so an installed skill costs nothing until it is used.

How are AI skills different from plugins or MCP servers?

A plugin or MCP server gives a model new tools to call — code that runs somewhere and returns a result. An AI skill gives the model knowledge and process instead: how to approach a task, which steps to follow, what good output looks like. Skills are plain Markdown, so they need no server, no API key and no runtime, and they work with any model.
