  • Markdown instructions

A SKILL.md file the model loads on demand, so it only costs tokens when a request actually matches.

  • Works with any LLM

AI skills are plain Markdown, not provider-specific code, so this works with GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model.

  • Self-contained

Everything the model needs lives in the instructions — no extra files to sync.

  • Open source

Published by rrrrrredy on GitHub. Read the source before you install it.

Installation

Install the Research Toolkit AI skill in TypingMind to use it with any LLM, or drop it into another agent that reads SKILL.md.

1

Install in TypingMind

TypingMind installs a skill straight from its GitHub folder — it reads SKILL.md, bundles the resource files, and stores the result locally.

  1. Open the app and go to Plugins → Skills.
  2. Choose "Install from GitHub".
  3. Paste the skill folder URL below and confirm.
    https://github.com/rrrrrredy/research-toolkit/tree/main/plugins/research-toolkit/skills/research-toolkit
  4. Enable the skill in any chat where you want it available.
Plugins → Skills → Add skill → From GitHub URL, then paste the folder URL and press Continue.
2

Install in another agent

Any agent that reads the Agent Skills format can use this skill — copy the folder into that agent's skills directory.

Claude Code — .claude/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/rrrrrredy/research-toolkit.git /tmp/research-toolkit
mkdir -p .claude/skills
cp -r /tmp/research-toolkit/plugins/research-toolkit/skills/research-toolkit .claude/skills/research-toolkit
Restart Claude Code after copying so it picks up the new skill.

Use it in TypingMind

Enable Research Toolkit in any TypingMind chat and the model takes it from there. Its name and description sit in the system prompt, and the moment a request matches, the model loads the full instructions itself — you never invoke it by hand, and it costs no tokens until it is actually used.

The model loads Research Toolkit on its own as soon as a request matches it.

Works with any AI model

AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so Research Toolkit is not tied to the model it was written for. Install it once in TypingMind and use it with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, or a local model you run yourself — all on your own API keys.

  • Loaded only when it is needed

The system prompt carries just the name and description. The instructions are fetched on the first matching request, so an idle skill costs nothing.

  • Switch models mid-chat

Because the skill is instructions rather than code, changing model does not break it — the next model reads the same SKILL.md.

Skill instructions

This is the SKILL.md content the model loads. Read it before installing — a skill is instructions your model will follow.

Research Toolkit

Use for industry, market, company, product, technology, policy and ecosystem research, including sourced briefs, long reports, revisions and source updates. Simple factual questions usually do not need the full workflow. Choose Lite when author checks fit the use; choose Full when selected reviews, revision decisions and delivery need to stay bound to the current version. Length does not cap either profile, and Full does not automatically mean independent review.

Read the bundled research instructions first. Keep research in a separate task directory; the execution tools return its location.

Use the bundled research tools when available. The CLI fallback uses the same implementation at ../../scripts/research_workflow.py; pass a JSON request through stdin or --request <file>. Read the usage guide for setup.

  1. Assemble concrete coverage, questions to answer and expected results from the conversation. Choose the profile using the bundled instructions, then call research_start with that explicit profile, brief and a short task ID. Resume an existing task through research_status, which preserves its saved profile. Treat returned missing_fields and clarification_questions as guidance for the agent, not a form to forward. Fill inferable details and record non-critical defaults as proposals; ask only about consequential choices that cannot be inferred, explaining the actual alternatives. Merge resolved details by calling start again with the saved profile while the task is in the brief stage. For Full, inspect review_readiness before collecting evidence: resolve blocked dependencies or login, and verify access for a custom reviewer command. A local login check does not establish model availability or quota. Lite skips reviewer setup.
  2. Call research_status as the task moves through collection, analysis and drafting. Read the current stage guidance once; reuse unchanged guidance and existing task-relative source/report paths. Save source texts in the returned task directory. Use research_save for source/claim/requirement objects and draft saves; handle its field errors yourself. Register the first complete draft using its existing path. Read research_status.activity for observed attempts, timing and returned usage. Users decide research scope and use; do not ask them to manage CSV or review JSON. The tools do not search or write the report for you.
  3. Lite follows the returned compact stage methods and skips research_review. For Full, call research_review with the report path, full evidence paths and correct purpose. For local self-review, use include_assignment: false and read the frozen assignment_ref under task_directory; reuse already-read unchanged evidence while checking the complete current report. Callers unable to read local files keep the default complete response. Ordinary reports use the configured content reviewer without a compulsory second audit context. Retain original responses and resume missing work. Evaluations and explicitly configured audits retain their declared requirements.
  4. For Full, resume only missing reviews/audits after a recoverable failure. A valid negative review is complete. Preserve original evaluation reports and judgments; use findings to improve the Toolkit. Carry out authorized report repairs in separately saved versions and review those versions. A frozen evaluation uses a separate repair task linked to the same research question; an ordinary report uses research_review with revision: true. Already authorized corrections do not need another confirmation. Reconcile changed research scope in the task records first.
  5. Call research_finish with the intended delivery message. Lite returns its six-item author checklist; perform the checks and submit actual results with concrete evidence. For Full, first record any evidenced no-change decisions in the existing review log using the record guide. The tool creates terminal state only if the selected profile's checks pass. If it fails, work on the concrete remaining items and keep the task nonterminal.

Use research_guide with an explicit profile to read a stage's methods without creating a task. Chinese guidance is available with language: "zh".

If MCP is unavailable, invoke the corresponding CLI action (start, save, status, review, finish, guide) from the plugin, retaining the selected profile. Never present Lite author checks or a degraded Full self-review as independent review. These tools enforce their own completion conditions; they do not certify semantic truth or prevent every possible host-agent mistake.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Research Toolkit AI skill do?

Source-backed research workflow for AI agents: scope, sources, claims, and task-appropriate Lite or Full checks.

Why use Research Toolkit on TypingMind?

Because you install it once and use it with any model. Research Toolkit is plain Markdown rather than provider-specific code, so the same skill runs on GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model — and you can switch model mid-chat without it breaking. TypingMind runs on your own API keys, so you pay providers directly instead of a per-seat subscription, and your skills and chats stay in your own storage.

How do I install Research Toolkit in TypingMind?

Open Plugins → Skills → Install from GitHub in TypingMind and paste https://github.com/rrrrrredy/research-toolkit/tree/main/plugins/research-toolkit/skills/research-toolkit. TypingMind reads its SKILL.md and installs it as a skill you can enable per chat.

Which AI models can use Research Toolkit?

Any model you connect in TypingMind. AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and local models can all load this skill when a request matches it.

How many AI models can I use with Research Toolkit?

As many as you like. As long as a model supports skills, you can use Research Toolkit with it — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama and more — all on TypingMind with your own API keys.

Is the Research Toolkit AI skill free?

Yes. It is published on GitHub by rrrrrredy under the MIT license. You only pay your own AI provider for the tokens you use.

What are AI skills?

An AI skill is a reusable instruction bundle that teaches an AI model how to do one specific task. It follows the open Agent Skills format: a SKILL.md file with a name and description, plus any scripts, templates or reference files the model may need. The model reads the instructions only when your request matches the skill, so an installed skill costs nothing until it is used.

How are AI skills different from plugins or MCP servers?

A plugin or MCP server gives a model new tools to call — code that runs somewhere and returns a result. An AI skill gives the model knowledge and process instead: how to approach a task, which steps to follow, what good output looks like. Skills are plain Markdown, so they need no server, no API key and no runtime, and they work with any model.
