  • Markdown instructions

    A SKILL.md file the model loads on demand, so it only costs tokens when a request actually matches.

  • Works with any LLM

    AI skills are plain Markdown, not provider-specific code, so this works with GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model.

  • Self-contained

    Everything the model needs lives in the instructions — no extra files to sync.

  • Open source

    Published by serac-labs on GitHub. Read the source before you install it.

Installation

Install the Update Set Workflow AI skill in TypingMind to use it with any LLM, or drop it into another agent that reads SKILL.md.

1

Install in TypingMind

TypingMind installs a skill straight from its GitHub folder — it reads SKILL.md, bundles the resource files, and stores the result locally.

  1. Open the app and go to Plugins → Skills.
  2. Choose "Install from GitHub".
  3. Paste the skill folder URL below and confirm.
    https://github.com/serac-labs/serac/tree/main/packages/skills/update-set-workflow
  4. Enable the skill in any chat where you want it available.
Plugins → Skills → Add skill → From GitHub URL, then paste the folder URL and press Continue.
2

Install in another agent

Any agent that reads the Agent Skills format can use this skill — copy the folder into that agent's skills directory.

Claude Code — .claude/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/serac-labs/serac.git /tmp/serac
mkdir -p .claude/skills
cp -r /tmp/serac/packages/skills/update-set-workflow .claude/skills/update-set-workflow
Restart Claude Code after copying so it picks up the new skill.

Use it in TypingMind

Enable Update Set Workflow in any TypingMind chat and the model takes it from there. Its name and description sit in the system prompt, and the moment a request matches, the model loads the full instructions itself — you never invoke it by hand, and it costs no tokens until it is actually used.

The model loads Update Set Workflow on its own as soon as a request matches it.

Works with any AI model

AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so Update Set Workflow is not tied to the model it was written for. Install it once in TypingMind and use it with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, or a local model you run yourself — all on your own API keys.

  • Loaded only when it is needed

    The system prompt carries just the name and description. The instructions are fetched on the first matching request, so an idle skill costs nothing.

  • Switch models mid-chat

    Because the skill is instructions rather than code, changing model does not break it — the next model reads the same SKILL.md.

Skill instructions

This is the SKILL.md content the model loads. Read it before installing — a skill is instructions your model will follow.

Update Set Workflow for ServiceNow

Update Sets are MANDATORY for tracking changes in ServiceNow development. Without an Update Set, changes are not tracked and cannot be deployed to other instances.

This is also enforced: configuration writes are blocked at the tool layer while no update set is active for the session. When you hit that block, ask the user whether to capture the work in a named update set, then call snow_ensure_active_update_set({ name }) once and retry. Only if the user explicitly declines tracking, re-issue the call once with __skipUpdateSet: true — the choice is remembered for the rest of the session.

Before ANY Development

ALWAYS create or ensure an Update Set is active before making changes:

javascript
// Step 1: Check current Update Set
var current = await snow_update_set_query({ action: "current" })

// Step 2: If no Update Set or using Default, create one
if (!current || current.name === "Default") {
  await snow_update_set_manage({
    action: "create",
    name: "Feature: [Descriptive Name]",
    description: "What and why this change is being made",
  })
}

// Step 3: Now safe to make changes
// All changes will be tracked!

// Step 4: When done, complete the Update Set
await snow_update_set_manage({
  action: "complete",
  update_set_id: current.sys_id,
})

Update Set Naming Conventions

TypeFormatExample
FeatureFeature: [Name]Feature: Incident Auto-Assignment
Bug FixFix: [Issue]Fix: Approval Email Not Sending
EnhancementEnhancement: [Name]Enhancement: Dashboard Performance
HotfixHotfix: [Issue]Hotfix: Critical Login Bug

Update Set Lifecycle

  1. In Progress - Active, receiving changes
  2. Complete - Ready for export/promotion
  3. Ignore - Changes won't be promoted (use for experiments)

What Gets Tracked

Update Sets automatically capture changes to:

  • Tables and columns
  • Business Rules
  • Script Includes
  • Client Scripts
  • UI Policies and Actions
  • Workflows and Flow Designer flows
  • Service Portal widgets and pages
  • ACLs and Security Rules
  • System Properties
  • Scheduled Jobs
  • And more...

What Does NOT Get Tracked

  • Data records (use Import Sets for data)
  • Attachments on records
  • User session information
  • Some system tables (sys_user, etc.)

MCP Tools for Update Sets

javascript
// Create new Update Set
snow_update_set_manage({
  action: "create",
  name: "Feature: My Feature",
  description: "Description of changes",
})

// Switch to existing Update Set
snow_update_set_manage({
  action: "switch",
  update_set_id: "sys_id_here",
})

// Get current Update Set
snow_update_set_query({ action: "current" })

// Complete Update Set
snow_update_set_manage({
  action: "complete",
  update_set_id: "sys_id_here",
})

// Export Update Set as XML
snow_update_set_manage({
  action: "export",
  update_set_id: "sys_id_here",
})

Best Practices

  1. One feature per Update Set - Don't mix unrelated changes
  2. Descriptive names - Make it clear what the Update Set contains
  3. Complete when done - Don't leave Update Sets open indefinitely
  4. Test before completing - Verify all changes work correctly
  5. Never use Default - Always create a named Update Set

OAuth Context & Update Set Tracking

Serac uses OAuth service account authentication. All API calls run as an OAuth service account, not as your UI user. Update Sets must be "current" for the user making the changes — for API changes that means current for the service account.

The Two Contexts

┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ YOUR UI SESSION (when you log in to ServiceNow UI) │
│ User: john.doe                                              │
│ Current Update Set: [Whatever you selected in the UI] │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ SERAC OAUTH SESSION (API calls) │
│ User: oauth.service.account                                 │
│ Current Update Set: [Set via Update Set tools] │
│ ← All Serac changes are tracked here │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

auto_switch — REQUIRED for tracking

  • auto_switch=true (DEFAULT) — Update Set is set as current for the service account, all changes ARE tracked ✅
  • auto_switch=false — Changes will NOT be tracked. Only use for queries/analysis, NEVER for development.

Key points

  • ✅ Update Sets ARE created — they exist in ServiceNow
  • ✅ Changes ARE tracked when auto_switch=true — all Serac artifacts go into the Update Set automatically
  • ❌ NOT visible in YOUR UI session unless you provide the servicenow_username parameter (which also makes it current for that UI user)
  • ✅ Deployment still works — the Update Set can be exported/imported normally
  • ⚠️ Don't disable auto_switch for development tasks

When to use servicenow_username

Optional. Pass your ServiceNow username when you want the Update Set to also appear as current in your UI session — handy when you're working in the ServiceNow UI alongside Serac and want to see the same Update Set selected in both places. It does not affect tracking; tracking is governed by auto_switch.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Update Set Workflow AI skill do?

Manage ServiceNow update sets — create named sets before any development, ensure auto_switch tracks API changes under the OAuth service account, complete on done, and export for promotion. Mandatory for all change-producing work.

Why use Update Set Workflow on TypingMind?

Because you install it once and use it with any model. Update Set Workflow is plain Markdown rather than provider-specific code, so the same skill runs on GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model — and you can switch model mid-chat without it breaking. TypingMind runs on your own API keys, so you pay providers directly instead of a per-seat subscription, and your skills and chats stay in your own storage.

How do I install Update Set Workflow in TypingMind?

Open Plugins → Skills → Install from GitHub in TypingMind and paste https://github.com/serac-labs/serac/tree/main/packages/skills/update-set-workflow. TypingMind reads its SKILL.md and installs it as a skill you can enable per chat.

Which AI models can use Update Set Workflow?

Any model you connect in TypingMind. AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and local models can all load this skill when a request matches it.

How many AI models can I use with Update Set Workflow?

As many as you like. As long as a model supports skills, you can use Update Set Workflow with it — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama and more — all on TypingMind with your own API keys.

Is the Update Set Workflow AI skill free?

Yes. It is published on GitHub by serac-labs under the Apache-2.0 license. You only pay your own AI provider for the tokens you use.

What are AI skills?

An AI skill is a reusable instruction bundle that teaches an AI model how to do one specific task. It follows the open Agent Skills format: a SKILL.md file with a name and description, plus any scripts, templates or reference files the model may need. The model reads the instructions only when your request matches the skill, so an installed skill costs nothing until it is used.

How are AI skills different from plugins or MCP servers?

A plugin or MCP server gives a model new tools to call — code that runs somewhere and returns a result. An AI skill gives the model knowledge and process instead: how to approach a task, which steps to follow, what good output looks like. Skills are plain Markdown, so they need no server, no API key and no runtime, and they work with any model.
