  • Markdown instructions

    A SKILL.md file the model loads on demand, so it only costs tokens when a request actually matches.

  • Works with any LLM

    AI skills are plain Markdown, not provider-specific code, so this works with GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model.

  • Self-contained

    Everything the model needs lives in the instructions — no extra files to sync.

  • Open source

    Published by sunnnybala on GitHub. Read the source before you install it.

Installation

Install the Rstack Upgrade AI skill in TypingMind to use it with any LLM, or drop it into another agent that reads SKILL.md.

1

Install in TypingMind

TypingMind installs a skill straight from its GitHub folder — it reads SKILL.md, bundles the resource files, and stores the result locally.

  1. Open the app and go to Plugins → Skills.
  2. Choose "Install from GitHub".
  3. Paste the skill folder URL below and confirm.
    https://github.com/sunnnybala/Rstack/tree/main/rstack-upgrade
  4. Enable the skill in any chat where you want it available.
Plugins → Skills → Add skill → From GitHub URL, then paste the folder URL and press Continue.
2

Install in another agent

Any agent that reads the Agent Skills format can use this skill — copy the folder into that agent's skills directory.

Claude Code — .claude/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/sunnnybala/Rstack.git /tmp/Rstack
mkdir -p .claude/skills
cp -r /tmp/Rstack/rstack-upgrade .claude/skills/rstack-upgrade
Restart Claude Code after copying so it picks up the new skill.

Use it in TypingMind

Enable Rstack Upgrade in any TypingMind chat and the model takes it from there. Its name and description sit in the system prompt, and the moment a request matches, the model loads the full instructions itself — you never invoke it by hand, and it costs no tokens until it is actually used.

The model loads Rstack Upgrade on its own as soon as a request matches it.

Works with any AI model

AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so Rstack Upgrade is not tied to the model it was written for. Install it once in TypingMind and use it with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, or a local model you run yourself — all on your own API keys.

  • Loaded only when it is needed

    The system prompt carries just the name and description. The instructions are fetched on the first matching request, so an idle skill costs nothing.

  • Switch models mid-chat

    Because the skill is instructions rather than code, changing model does not break it — the next model reads the same SKILL.md.

Skill instructions

This is the SKILL.md content the model loads. Read it before installing — a skill is instructions your model will follow.

If TEL_PROMPTED is no: Ask the user about telemetry. Use AskUserQuestion:

Help RStack get better! Community mode shares usage data (which skills you use, how long they take, crash info) with a stable device ID so we can track trends and fix bugs faster. No code, file paths, or repo names are ever sent. Change anytime with rstack-config set telemetry off.

Options:

  • A) Help RStack get better! (recommended)
  • B) No thanks

If A: run rstack-config set telemetry community

If B: ask a follow-up:

How about anonymous mode? Just a counter that helps us know if anyone's out there.

Options:

  • A) Sure, anonymous is fine
  • B) No thanks, fully off

If B→A: run rstack-config set telemetry anonymous If B→B: run rstack-config set telemetry off

Always run:

bash
touch ~/.rstack/.telemetry-prompted

This only happens once. If TEL_PROMPTED is yes, skip this entirely.

Inline Upgrade Flow

This flow is called from the preamble of any skill when UPGRADE_AVAILABLE <old> <new> is detected. It is also the standalone flow when the user types /rstack-upgrade.

Step 1: Check for updates

If invoked standalone (not from another skill's preamble), force-check:

bash
"$HOME/.claude/skills/rstack/bin/rstack-update-check" --force 2>/dev/null || true

Parse the output. If UPGRADE_AVAILABLE <old> <new>, proceed. If nothing (up to date), tell user: "RStack is up to date (v{version})." and stop.

Step 2: Ask the user

Use AskUserQuestion:

RStack update available: v{old} → v{new}.

A) Upgrade now B) Always auto-upgrade (recommended for solo devs) C) Not now (remind me later) D) Never ask again

If A or B: proceed to Step 3. If B: also run ~/.claude/skills/rstack/bin/rstack-config set auto_upgrade true. If C: write snooze state:

bash
_SNOOZE_FILE="$HOME/.rstack/update-snoozed"
_REMOTE_VER="{new version}"
if [ -f "$_SNOOZE_FILE" ]; then
  _LEVEL=$(awk '{print $2}' "$_SNOOZE_FILE" 2>/dev/null || echo "0")
  _LEVEL=$((_LEVEL + 1))
else
  _LEVEL=1
fi
echo "$_REMOTE_VER $_LEVEL $(date +%s)" > "$_SNOOZE_FILE"

Tell user: "Snoozed. I'll remind you in {24h/48h/7d depending on level}." Continue with the original skill.

If D: run ~/.claude/skills/rstack/bin/rstack-config set update_check false. Tell user: "Update checks disabled. Re-enable anytime with bin/rstack-config set update_check true." Continue with the original skill.

Step 3: Run the upgrade

bash
_RSTACK_DIR="$HOME/.claude/skills/rstack"
_OLD_VER="$(cat "$_RSTACK_DIR/VERSION" 2>/dev/null | tr -d '[:space:]')"

cd "$_RSTACK_DIR"
git stash --include-untracked 2>/dev/null || true
git fetch origin main 2>/dev/null
git reset --hard origin/main 2>/dev/null

# Re-run setup to update symlinks
./setup 2>/dev/null

_NEW_VER="$(cat "$_RSTACK_DIR/VERSION" 2>/dev/null | tr -d '[:space:]')"

If the upgrade fails (git fetch or reset errors), restore:

bash
git stash pop 2>/dev/null || true

Tell user: "Upgrade failed. Your current version is preserved. Error: {error message}."

Step 4: Write marker and clear cache

bash
echo "$_OLD_VER" > "$HOME/.rstack/just-upgraded-from"
rm -f "$HOME/.rstack/last-update-check"
rm -f "$HOME/.rstack/update-snoozed"

Step 5: Show what's new

Read CHANGELOG.md from the upgraded repo. Show the entries between the old and new versions.

Tell user: "Upgraded RStack: v{old} → v{new}. Here's what's new: {changelog summary}."

If called from another skill's preamble, continue with that skill. If standalone, stop.

Auto-Upgrade Mode

If auto_upgrade config is true, skip the AskUserQuestion in Step 2 and go directly to Step 3. After upgrading, tell user: "RStack auto-upgraded: v{old} → v{new}." and continue.

If auto-upgrade fails, fall back to asking the user (don't silently continue with a broken install).

Telemetry (run last)

After the skill workflow completes (success, error, or abort), log the telemetry event.

bash
# --- GENERATED EPILOGUE START ---
_TEL_END=$(date +%s)
_TEL_DUR=$(( _TEL_END - _TEL_START ))
rm -f ~/.rstack/analytics/.pending-"$_SESSION_ID" 2>/dev/null || true
if [ "$_TEL" != "off" ]; then
  echo '{"skill":"rstack-upgrade","duration_s":"'"$_TEL_DUR"'","outcome":"OUTCOME","session":"'"$_SESSION_ID"'","ts":"'$(date -u +%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%SZ)'"}' >> ~/.rstack/analytics/skill-usage.jsonl 2>/dev/null || true
fi
if [ "$_TEL" != "off" ] && [ -x "$_RSTACK_DIR/bin/rstack-telemetry-log" ]; then
  "$_RSTACK_DIR/bin/rstack-telemetry-log" \
    --skill "rstack-upgrade" --duration "$_TEL_DUR" --outcome "OUTCOME" \
    --session-id "$_SESSION_ID" 2>/dev/null &
fi
# --- GENERATED EPILOGUE END ---

Replace OUTCOME with success/error/abort based on the workflow result.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Rstack Upgrade AI skill do?

Upgrade RStack to the latest version. Detects global vs vendored install, runs the upgrade, and shows what's new. Use when asked to "upgrade rstack", "update rstack", or "get latest version".

Why use Rstack Upgrade on TypingMind?

Because you install it once and use it with any model. Rstack Upgrade is plain Markdown rather than provider-specific code, so the same skill runs on GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model — and you can switch model mid-chat without it breaking. TypingMind runs on your own API keys, so you pay providers directly instead of a per-seat subscription, and your skills and chats stay in your own storage.

How do I install Rstack Upgrade in TypingMind?

Open Plugins → Skills → Install from GitHub in TypingMind and paste https://github.com/sunnnybala/Rstack/tree/main/rstack-upgrade. TypingMind reads its SKILL.md and installs it as a skill you can enable per chat.

Which AI models can use Rstack Upgrade?

Any model you connect in TypingMind. AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and local models can all load this skill when a request matches it.

How many AI models can I use with Rstack Upgrade?

As many as you like. As long as a model supports skills, you can use Rstack Upgrade with it — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama and more — all on TypingMind with your own API keys.

Is the Rstack Upgrade AI skill free?

Yes. It is published on GitHub by sunnnybala under the MIT license. You only pay your own AI provider for the tokens you use.

What are AI skills?

An AI skill is a reusable instruction bundle that teaches an AI model how to do one specific task. It follows the open Agent Skills format: a SKILL.md file with a name and description, plus any scripts, templates or reference files the model may need. The model reads the instructions only when your request matches the skill, so an installed skill costs nothing until it is used.

How are AI skills different from plugins or MCP servers?

A plugin or MCP server gives a model new tools to call — code that runs somewhere and returns a result. An AI skill gives the model knowledge and process instead: how to approach a task, which steps to follow, what good output looks like. Skills are plain Markdown, so they need no server, no API key and no runtime, and they work with any model.
