HA Dashboard Design

Bespoke Home Assistant dashboards with original layouts, typography, CSS themes, card-mod styles, and button-card templates. Nine distinct visual styles: Glassmorphism, Dark Minimal, Material You, Nordic, Neon/Cyberpunk, Warm Home, Soft Pastel, Luxury Gold, and Retro Terminal are starting points, not limits. Supports custom dashboards that do not look like the stock Home Assistant UI. Use when the user wants their own visual identity, asks about card styling, CSS for Home Assistant, card-mod, button-card templates, Lovelace themes, dashboard aesthetics, or wants a specific visual style - even if they don't use the words "design" or "CSS".

  • Markdown instructions

A SKILL.md file the model loads on demand, so it only costs tokens when a request actually matches.

  • Works with any LLM

AI skills are plain Markdown, not provider-specific code, so this works with GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model.

  • 13 bundled files

Scripts, templates, and references the model can read while it works. Files are read-only and never executed.

  • Open source

Published by tonylofgren on GitHub. Read the source before you install it.

Installation

Install the HA Dashboard Design AI skill in TypingMind to use it with any LLM, or drop it into another agent that reads SKILL.md.

1

Install in TypingMind

TypingMind installs a skill straight from its GitHub folder — it reads SKILL.md, bundles the resource files, and stores the result locally.

  1. Open the app and go to Plugins → Skills.
  2. Choose "Install from GitHub".
  3. Paste the skill folder URL below and confirm.
    https://github.com/tonylofgren/aurora-smart-home/tree/main/ha-dashboard-design
  4. Enable the skill in any chat where you want it available.
Plugins → Skills → Add skill → From GitHub URL, then paste the folder URL and press Continue.
2

Install in another agent

Any agent that reads the Agent Skills format can use this skill — copy the folder into that agent's skills directory.

Claude Code — .claude/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/tonylofgren/aurora-smart-home.git /tmp/aurora-smart-home
mkdir -p .claude/skills
cp -r /tmp/aurora-smart-home/ha-dashboard-design .claude/skills/tonylofgren-ha-dashboard-design
Restart Claude Code after copying so it picks up the new skill.

Use it in TypingMind

Enable HA Dashboard Design in any TypingMind chat and the model takes it from there. Its name and description sit in the system prompt, and the moment a request matches, the model loads the full instructions itself — you never invoke it by hand, and it costs no tokens until it is actually used.

The model loads HA Dashboard Design on its own as soon as a request matches it.

Works with any AI model

AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so HA Dashboard Design is not tied to the model it was written for. Install it once in TypingMind and use it with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, or a local model you run yourself — all on your own API keys.

  • Loaded only when it is needed

The system prompt carries just the name and description. The instructions are fetched on the first matching request, so an idle skill costs nothing.

  • Switch models mid-chat

Because the skill is instructions rather than code, changing model does not break it — the next model reads the same SKILL.md.

Skill instructions

This is the SKILL.md content the model loads. Read it before installing — a skill is instructions your model will follow.

HA Dashboard Design

Create a dashboard around the user's visual direction. Home Assistant supplies entities and actions; its default card appearance is optional. The nine styles below are references, not a menu the user must choose from.

Choose the design approach

For an original theme, a reference screenshot, a wall panel, or a request that should not look like Home Assistant, read Custom dashboards. Start with the intended screen, the information hierarchy, and the user's aesthetic. Reuse supplied preferences; ask only for missing details that change the design.

  • Theme only: preserve familiar cards and change colors, typography and surfaces.
  • Custom composition: reshape the whole view with CSS Grid, button-card templates and original navigation. This is the usual choice for an app-like dashboard.
  • Custom card or panel: use a maintained web component when the interaction cannot be expressed by existing cards. Do not force an independent frontend on a theme request.

Working starter: Editorial dashboard, with separate theme and dashboard files, responsive layouts and replaceable entity placeholders.

Optional building blocks (install only those used)

  • card-mod - CSS styling for supported cards, with shadow-DOM limits
  • button-card - fully customizable button cards
  • mini-graph-card - beautiful graphs (optional)
  • mushroom - modern card suite (optional, used in some styles)
  • layout-card - explicit responsive CSS Grid layouts (used by the editorial starter)

How to Use

  1. Read the requested style, or references/custom-dashboards.md for an original design
  2. Copy the Theme YAML → paste into config/themes/your-style.yaml
  3. Place card-level card_mod: style: under each target card. The old style references' "global styles" blocks are reusable card-level blocks, not dashboard resources. Resources register JavaScript modules; theme-wide card-mod uses its documented theme format.
  4. Copy individual card blocks → paste directly into your dashboard YAML
  5. Adjust entity IDs to match your setup

Quick Start - Any Style

yaml
# configuration.yaml - enable themes folder
frontend:
  themes: !include_dir_merge_named themes/
yaml
# Activate a theme on a view, inside the dashboard's views list
views:
  - title: Home
    theme: your-theme-name
    type: sections
    sections: []

Image Generation

To generate background images or dashboard mockup visualizations matching any style, read references/image-prompts.md - contains ready-to-paste prompts for Midjourney, DALL-E 3, Stable Diffusion, and Flux for every style.

Reference Files

Read only the file for the requested style:

  • references/custom-dashboards.md - original visual identities, layout choice, installation and QA
  • references/glassmorphism.md
  • references/dark-minimal.md
  • references/material-you.md
  • references/nordic.md
  • references/neon-cyberpunk.md
  • references/warm-home.md
  • references/soft-pastel.md
  • references/luxury-gold.md
  • references/retro-terminal.md
  • references/image-prompts.md - image generation prompts for backgrounds and mockups

Card Types Covered in Every Style

Each reference file contains copy-paste blocks for:

  • Sensor display - temperature, humidity, power readings
  • Media player - Spotify, TV, speaker controls
  • Climate / thermostat - temperature control with visual feedback
  • Security / alarm - arm/disarm, door/window sensors
  • Camera - live feed with overlay
  • Button grid - scene/light/device shortcuts
  • Weather - current + forecast display
  • Energy - power consumption, solar, grid
  • Light control - on/off, brightness, color temp slider
  • Presence - person/device tracker cards
  • Calendar / agenda - upcoming events
  • Statistics / graphs - sensor history, mini-graph
  • Header / navigation - page title, room nav
  • Alert banners - notifications, warnings, status

Dashboard Types

Choose for the layout, using the user's installed HA and custom-card versions:

ViewUse when
sectionsNative responsive grouping and visual editing are useful; current HA default
masonryIndependently sized cards should flow into columns
panelA full-width composition needs one root card, such as a layout-card grid
custom:grid-layoutExplicit CSS Grid placement and breakpoints are needed; requires layout-card

Do not mix sections: and masonry cards: structures. A panel view has exactly one card. An original appearance does not require hiding HA navigation. Offer kiosk behavior only when requested, with an obvious route back to editing and without treating hidden controls as access control.

Pre-Output Checklist

  • Layout and visual identity match the request; no forced preset or masonry default
  • Theme YAML included with correct filename
  • card-mod styles wrapped in correct YAML structure
  • All entity IDs marked as placeholders (e.g., sensor.YOUR_TEMPERATURE)
  • HACS dependencies listed at top of output
  • Credentials/secrets not hardcoded
  • Dependencies, theme installation, resource registration and entity replacements documented
  • Narrow/mobile and wide layouts considered; touch targets and visible text remain legible
  • Missing/unavailable entities render honestly; critical actions retain confirmation
  • Distinguish YAML/schema checks from actual live HA rendering and device interaction tests

For repository templates, placeholders are intentional and documented. For a user's live dashboard, resolve real entity IDs (or explicitly identify unverified IDs). Write the dashboard, theme and installation notes to disk; follow the Iris delivery contract in aurora/souls/iris.md.

Integration

Pairs with:

  • ha-yaml skill - for automations that respond to dashboard interactions
  • api-catalog skill - for sensor data displayed on the dashboard

Bundled files

The model reads these on demand while the skill is loaded. They are exposed as readable files and are never executed.

Frequently asked questions

What does the HA Dashboard Design AI skill do?

Why use HA Dashboard Design on TypingMind?

Because you install it once and use it with any model. HA Dashboard Design is plain Markdown rather than provider-specific code, so the same skill runs on GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model — and you can switch model mid-chat without it breaking. TypingMind runs on your own API keys, so you pay providers directly instead of a per-seat subscription, and your skills and chats stay in your own storage.

How do I install HA Dashboard Design in TypingMind?

Open Plugins → Skills → Install from GitHub in TypingMind and paste https://github.com/tonylofgren/aurora-smart-home/tree/main/ha-dashboard-design. TypingMind reads its SKILL.md and bundles its files and installs it as a skill you can enable per chat.

Which AI models can use HA Dashboard Design?

Any model you connect in TypingMind. AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and local models can all load this skill when a request matches it.

How many AI models can I use with HA Dashboard Design?

As many as you like. As long as a model supports skills, you can use HA Dashboard Design with it — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama and more — all on TypingMind with your own API keys.

Is the HA Dashboard Design AI skill free?

Yes. It is published on GitHub by tonylofgren under the MIT license. You only pay your own AI provider for the tokens you use.

What are AI skills?

An AI skill is a reusable instruction bundle that teaches an AI model how to do one specific task. It follows the open Agent Skills format: a SKILL.md file with a name and description, plus any scripts, templates or reference files the model may need. The model reads the instructions only when your request matches the skill, so an installed skill costs nothing until it is used.

How are AI skills different from plugins or MCP servers?

A plugin or MCP server gives a model new tools to call — code that runs somewhere and returns a result. An AI skill gives the model knowledge and process instead: how to approach a task, which steps to follow, what good output looks like. Skills are plain Markdown, so they need no server, no API key and no runtime, and they work with any model.
