Use this skill for the money math of a bootstrapped business: 'what's my quit number,' 'how many customers do I need,' 'how long is my runway,' 'should I raise money or bootstrap,' 'how much should I set aside for taxes,' 'do I need an accountant,' or 'are my numbers OK.' Works out the quit number, runway, and whether the business survives without outside money, sets up simple money habits, and says when the numbers mean stop. Not for setting a price (use pricing) or for forming a company (use legal).

  • Markdown instructions

A SKILL.md file the model loads on demand, so it only costs tokens when a request actually matches.

  • Works with any LLM

AI skills are plain Markdown, not provider-specific code, so this works with GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model.

  • Self-contained

Everything the model needs lives in the instructions — no extra files to sync.

  • Open source

Published by whawkinsiv on GitHub. Read the source before you install it.

Installation

Install the Finances AI skill in TypingMind to use it with any LLM, or drop it into another agent that reads SKILL.md.

1

Install in TypingMind

TypingMind installs a skill straight from its GitHub folder — it reads SKILL.md, bundles the resource files, and stores the result locally.

  1. Open the app and go to Plugins → Skills.
  2. Choose "Install from GitHub".
  3. Paste the skill folder URL below and confirm.
    https://github.com/whawkinsiv/solo-founder-skills/tree/main/skills/finances
  4. Enable the skill in any chat where you want it available.
Plugins → Skills → Add skill → From GitHub URL, then paste the folder URL and press Continue.
2

Install in another agent

Any agent that reads the Agent Skills format can use this skill — copy the folder into that agent's skills directory.

Claude Code — .claude/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/whawkinsiv/solo-founder-skills.git /tmp/solo-founder-skills
mkdir -p .claude/skills
cp -r /tmp/solo-founder-skills/skills/finances .claude/skills/finances
Restart Claude Code after copying so it picks up the new skill.

Use it in TypingMind

Enable Finances in any TypingMind chat and the model takes it from there. Its name and description sit in the system prompt, and the moment a request matches, the model loads the full instructions itself — you never invoke it by hand, and it costs no tokens until it is actually used.

The model loads Finances on its own as soon as a request matches it.

Works with any AI model

AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so Finances is not tied to the model it was written for. Install it once in TypingMind and use it with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, or a local model you run yourself — all on your own API keys.

  • Loaded only when it is needed

The system prompt carries just the name and description. The instructions are fetched on the first matching request, so an idle skill costs nothing.

  • Switch models mid-chat

Because the skill is instructions rather than code, changing model does not break it — the next model reads the same SKILL.md.

Skill instructions

This is the SKILL.md content the model loads. Read it before installing — a skill is instructions your model will follow.

Finances

For a bootstrapper, runway is the main limit. Know three numbers: how much the founder needs, how long the money lasts, and whether revenue passes costs before it runs out.

Step 1: The quit number

Monthly personal costs (rent, food, insurance, debt, other) + 20% buffer = monthly need
Revenue needed per month = monthly need ÷ 0.70 (covers tax, tools, and variance)
Customers needed = revenue needed ÷ price
Timeline = customers needed ÷ realistic new customers per month

Show the timeline plainly. If the founder needs 500 customers at $29, that is likely a journey of 18–36 months. pricing shows how a higher price shortens it.

Step 2: Runway

Savings set aside for this ÷ monthly costs while building = months of runway

Write down the date the money runs out, and the date the founder must decide (about 3 months before that).

Step 3: Will it survive without outside money?

At the current growth and costs, does monthly revenue pass monthly costs before the runway ends? If yes, the business is alive by default. Every decision can then be made calmly. If no, something must change: more customers, a higher price, lower costs, or more runway. Say which change matters most.

Step 4: Bootstrap or raise

Default to staying profitable. Profit means unlimited runway and full control.

Outside money can make sense when:

  • a funded competitor would win the market by moving faster, or
  • the product needs money that customers cannot fund first, or
  • the founder has proof (paying customers, growth), so the terms are good.

Options, from most control to least: customer revenue → revenue-based financing → angel investors → funds that back profitable companies → venture capital. Venture capital expects a very large outcome, and it changes what "success" means. Before raising, talk to 2–3 founders who took that kind of money. Then use focus (Mode B) for the decision.

Step 5: Money habits from day one

  • A separate business bank account and card. Never mix personal and business money.
  • Set aside 25–30% of profit for tax in a separate account each month. In the US, pay estimated taxes quarterly. Elsewhere, check the local rules.
  • Bookkeeping: categorize transactions weekly, in a spreadsheet or a simple tool. Counting money when it arrives (cash basis) is fine early on.
  • Hire an accountant for year-end taxes once revenue is real. Hire a monthly bookkeeper only when the books take hours.
  • Spend in this order: software first, then freelancers, then employees.

Step 6: Watch these numbers every month

NumberWhy
Paying customers (new, lost)The first sign of fit or of trouble
Monthly revenueProgress toward the quit number
Cash and runwayHow long the founder can keep going
Profit or lossWhether the business survives alone

Track the cost to acquire a customer and the lifetime value of a customer only once the founder spends money to acquire customers.

When the numbers say stop or change

  • More than 10% of customers leave each month, with no clear fix.
  • No new paying customers for 3 months, despite steady outreach.
  • Less than 3 months of runway, with no path to profit.
  • It costs more to acquire a customer than that customer pays over their lifetime, after 3 months of trying to fix it.

Hitting one of these means: change the customer, the offer, or the price, or stop. Say so plainly.

Output

Quit number: <revenue needed per month>, <customers needed> at <price>, about <months>
Runway: <months>, money runs out <date>, decide by <date>
Survives without outside money: <yes / no, and the one change that matters most>
This month: <the numbers table>

Frequently asked questions

What does the Finances AI skill do?

Use this skill for the money math of a bootstrapped business: 'what's my quit number,' 'how many customers do I need,' 'how long is my runway,' 'should I raise money or bootstrap,' 'how much should I set aside for taxes,' 'do I need an accountant,' or 'are my numbers OK.' Why use Finances on TypingMind?

Because you install it once and use it with any model. Finances is plain Markdown rather than provider-specific code, so the same skill runs on GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model — and you can switch model mid-chat without it breaking. TypingMind runs on your own API keys, so you pay providers directly instead of a per-seat subscription, and your skills and chats stay in your own storage.

How do I install Finances in TypingMind?

Open Plugins → Skills → Install from GitHub in TypingMind and paste https://github.com/whawkinsiv/solo-founder-skills/tree/main/skills/finances. TypingMind reads its SKILL.md and installs it as a skill you can enable per chat.

Which AI models can use Finances?

Any model you connect in TypingMind. AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and local models can all load this skill when a request matches it.

How many AI models can I use with Finances?

As many as you like. As long as a model supports skills, you can use Finances with it — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama and more — all on TypingMind with your own API keys.

Is the Finances AI skill free?

Yes. It is published on GitHub by whawkinsiv under the MIT license. You only pay your own AI provider for the tokens you use.

What are AI skills?

An AI skill is a reusable instruction bundle that teaches an AI model how to do one specific task. It follows the open Agent Skills format: a SKILL.md file with a name and description, plus any scripts, templates or reference files the model may need. The model reads the instructions only when your request matches the skill, so an installed skill costs nothing until it is used.

How are AI skills different from plugins or MCP servers?

A plugin or MCP server gives a model new tools to call — code that runs somewhere and returns a result. An AI skill gives the model knowledge and process instead: how to approach a task, which steps to follow, what good output looks like. Skills are plain Markdown, so they need no server, no API key and no runtime, and they work with any model.
