pricing

Use this skill to decide what to charge: 'how much should I charge,' 'what should I charge my first customers,' 'pricing tiers,' 'freemium or free trial,' 'should I raise my prices,' or 'pricing page.' Before 10 paying customers it sets one simple price and works out how many customers the founder needs. After 10 it designs tiers from how real customers differ. Not for setting up Stripe or billing code (use payments) or for runway and the quit number (use finances).

  • Markdown instructions

A SKILL.md file the model loads on demand, so it only costs tokens when a request actually matches.

  • Works with any LLM

AI skills are plain Markdown, not provider-specific code, so this works with GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model.

  • Self-contained

Everything the model needs lives in the instructions — no extra files to sync.

  • Open source

Published by whawkinsiv on GitHub. Read the source before you install it.

Installation

Install the Pricing AI skill in TypingMind to use it with any LLM, or drop it into another agent that reads SKILL.md.

1

Install in TypingMind

TypingMind installs a skill straight from its GitHub folder — it reads SKILL.md, bundles the resource files, and stores the result locally.

  1. Open the app and go to Plugins → Skills.
  2. Choose "Install from GitHub".
  3. Paste the skill folder URL below and confirm.
    https://github.com/whawkinsiv/solo-founder-skills/tree/main/skills/pricing
  4. Enable the skill in any chat where you want it available.
Plugins → Skills → Add skill → From GitHub URL, then paste the folder URL and press Continue.
2

Install in another agent

Any agent that reads the Agent Skills format can use this skill — copy the folder into that agent's skills directory.

Claude Code — .claude/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/whawkinsiv/solo-founder-skills.git /tmp/solo-founder-skills
mkdir -p .claude/skills
cp -r /tmp/solo-founder-skills/skills/pricing .claude/skills/pricing
Restart Claude Code after copying so it picks up the new skill.

Use it in TypingMind

Enable Pricing in any TypingMind chat and the model takes it from there. Its name and description sit in the system prompt, and the moment a request matches, the model loads the full instructions itself — you never invoke it by hand, and it costs no tokens until it is actually used.

The model loads Pricing on its own as soon as a request matches it.

Works with any AI model

AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so Pricing is not tied to the model it was written for. Install it once in TypingMind and use it with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, or a local model you run yourself — all on your own API keys.

  • Loaded only when it is needed

The system prompt carries just the name and description. The instructions are fetched on the first matching request, so an idle skill costs nothing.

  • Switch models mid-chat

Because the skill is instructions rather than code, changing model does not break it — the next model reads the same SKILL.md.

Skill instructions

This is the SKILL.md content the model loads. Read it before installing — a skill is instructions your model will follow.

Pricing

Charge from the first customer. A free user tells you they like free things. A paying customer tells you the problem is worth money.

Step 1: Find the stage

Ask how many people pay today. Before 10, use Step 2. From 10 on, use Step 3.

Step 2: Before 10 paying customers

  1. Set one price. No tiers, no free plan. Base it on what the customer spends on the problem today, in money or in hours multiplied by their hourly rate. Your costs set the floor, not the price.
  2. Check the anchor. What do these customers already pay for tools? A $49 add-on feels small to someone paying $300 a month for software, and large to someone who pays nothing.
  3. Do the customer math with the founder:
Income needed per month ÷ price = customers needed
    e.g. \$4,000 ÷ \$49 = 82 customers
At one new customer per week, that is about 18 months.
Show the timeline, so the founder sees the effect of price. At $99, the same goal needs 41 customers. finances has the full quit-number worksheet.
  4. Take the money simply: a payment link or an invoice (see payments). Billing code can wait.
  5. Raise the price as you go. When most people say yes without hesitation, the price is too low. Raise it for new customers, and keep early customers at their price.

If buyers need to try before they pay, offer a short trial that ends in payment, or a refund guarantee. Do not offer a free plan.

Step 3: From 10 paying customers

  1. Choose the value metric: the unit that grows as customers get more value, and that they can predict: seats, projects, contacts, usage. Avoid gating that relies only on features, and flat prices that cannot grow.
  2. Build 2–3 tiers from real differences among the first customers: size, usage, or the job they hire the product for. Each tier gives a clear reason to move up, such as a limit they hit or a feature only one group needs.
  3. Free plan or trial:
    • A free plan works only when free users bring paying users (they invite others or share output) and cost almost nothing to serve.
    • A free trial fits products whose value needs setup to see.
    • Most early products need neither: a trial that ends in payment is enough.
  4. Annual plans: offer about two months free. They help cash flow and reduce churn.
  5. The pricing page: mark the recommended plan, show the price, and answer "Can I cancel?" and "What happens to my data?" Hide prices only for a custom enterprise plan.

Changing prices

  • Keep existing customers at their price for at least 6–12 months, or for good.
  • Change prices for new sign-ups first.
  • Announce increases at least 30 days ahead, with the reason.

Rules

  • Most founders underprice. A price nobody complains about is too low.
  • Price is a signal. Too low says "toy." Too high, without proof, says "not for me."
  • Do not copy a competitor's price. Use it as an anchor only. Their costs, customers, and strategy are not yours.

Output

Stage: <before 10 / from 10>
Price: <amount, and the reason in one sentence>
Customer math: <customers needed for the founder's goal, and the timeline>
How to charge: <payment link / invoice / checkout>
Review on: <date, usually after the next 10 customers>

Frequently asked questions

What does the Pricing AI skill do?

Use this skill to decide what to charge: 'how much should I charge,' 'what should I charge my first customers,' 'pricing tiers,' 'freemium or free trial,' 'should I raise my prices,' or 'pricing page.' Before 10 paying customers it sets one simple price and works out how many customers the founder needs. After 10 it designs tiers from how real customers differ. Why use Pricing on TypingMind?

Because you install it once and use it with any model. Pricing is plain Markdown rather than provider-specific code, so the same skill runs on GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model — and you can switch model mid-chat without it breaking. TypingMind runs on your own API keys, so you pay providers directly instead of a per-seat subscription, and your skills and chats stay in your own storage.

How do I install Pricing in TypingMind?

Open Plugins → Skills → Install from GitHub in TypingMind and paste https://github.com/whawkinsiv/solo-founder-skills/tree/main/skills/pricing. TypingMind reads its SKILL.md and installs it as a skill you can enable per chat.

Which AI models can use Pricing?

Any model you connect in TypingMind. AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and local models can all load this skill when a request matches it.

How many AI models can I use with Pricing?

As many as you like. As long as a model supports skills, you can use Pricing with it — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama and more — all on TypingMind with your own API keys.

Is the Pricing AI skill free?

Yes. It is published on GitHub by whawkinsiv under the MIT license. You only pay your own AI provider for the tokens you use.

What are AI skills?

An AI skill is a reusable instruction bundle that teaches an AI model how to do one specific task. It follows the open Agent Skills format: a SKILL.md file with a name and description, plus any scripts, templates or reference files the model may need. The model reads the instructions only when your request matches the skill, so an installed skill costs nothing until it is used.

How are AI skills different from plugins or MCP servers?

A plugin or MCP server gives a model new tools to call — code that runs somewhere and returns a result. An AI skill gives the model knowledge and process instead: how to approach a task, which steps to follow, what good output looks like. Skills are plain Markdown, so they need no server, no API key and no runtime, and they work with any model.
