  • Markdown instructions

A SKILL.md file the model loads on demand, so it only costs tokens when a request actually matches.

  • Works with any LLM

AI skills are plain Markdown, not provider-specific code, so this works with GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model.

  • Self-contained

Everything the model needs lives in the instructions — no extra files to sync.

  • Open source

Published by bradfrost on GitHub. Read the source before you install it.

Installation

Install the Setup Brad Frost Skills AI skill in TypingMind to use it with any LLM, or drop it into another agent that reads SKILL.md.

1

Install in TypingMind

TypingMind installs a skill straight from its GitHub folder — it reads SKILL.md, bundles the resource files, and stores the result locally.

  1. Open the app and go to Plugins → Skills.
  2. Choose "Install from GitHub".
  3. Paste the skill folder URL below and confirm.
    https://github.com/bradfrost/skills/tree/main/skills/setup-brad-frost-skills
  4. Enable the skill in any chat where you want it available.
Plugins → Skills → Add skill → From GitHub URL, then paste the folder URL and press Continue.
2

Install in another agent

Any agent that reads the Agent Skills format can use this skill — copy the folder into that agent's skills directory.

Claude Code — .claude/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/bradfrost/skills.git /tmp/skills
mkdir -p .claude/skills
cp -r /tmp/skills/skills/setup-brad-frost-skills .claude/skills/setup-brad-frost-skills
Restart Claude Code after copying so it picks up the new skill.

Use it in TypingMind

Enable Setup Brad Frost Skills in any TypingMind chat and the model takes it from there. Its name and description sit in the system prompt, and the moment a request matches, the model loads the full instructions itself — you never invoke it by hand, and it costs no tokens until it is actually used.

The model loads Setup Brad Frost Skills on its own as soon as a request matches it.

Works with any AI model

AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so Setup Brad Frost Skills is not tied to the model it was written for. Install it once in TypingMind and use it with GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama, or a local model you run yourself — all on your own API keys.

  • Loaded only when it is needed

The system prompt carries just the name and description. The instructions are fetched on the first matching request, so an idle skill costs nothing.

  • Switch models mid-chat

Because the skill is instructions rather than code, changing model does not break it — the next model reads the same SKILL.md.

Skill instructions

This is the SKILL.md content the model loads. Read it before installing — a skill is instructions your model will follow.

Setup: Brad Frost skills

You are the front door for this collection. Your job is to find out what the person actually installed, run the setup that those skills need, and get out of the way. You are a router, not a second interview — never duplicate or paraphrase another skill's questions; invoke that skill and let it speak for itself.

1. Find what's installed

Check which of these skills are available to you. Prefer your own view of the installed skills; otherwise look for the directories in the agent's skills locations (~/.claude/skills/, .claude/skills/, ~/.agents/skills/, .agents/skills/, or wherever this agent keeps them):

FamilySkillsNeeds setup?
Limitslimits-setup, limits-sessions, limits-quiet-hours, limits-endings, limits-energyYes — the interview
Design systemsds-inspection, ds-adoption-planNo
Design systemsds-ai-railsNo; discovers the environment on its first run
Design systemsds-asciiYes — build the design system profile
Product designproduct-inspectionNo
Product designvibe-killerYes — build the design system profile
Product designproduct-to-storybookYes — learn the host Storybook
Product designstorybook-to-productNo
Judgmentwhat-do-i-make-of-thisNo

If none of them are present, say so plainly and stop — tell them to install first (npx skills add bradfrost/skills -g). Don't guess, and don't run setup for a skill that isn't there.

2. Say what you found

One short line, then get on with it. For example:

"Found the limits skills and the design system inspection skills. The limits skills need a quick setup; the inspection skills don't. Let's do the limits."

Nothing more — no feature tour, no list of everything each skill can do.

3. Run the setups that are needed

If any limits-* skill is installed: run the limits-setup skill and follow it exactly. It owns its own script, its own questions, and its own close. Do not restate its questions here, and do not add your own framing around them.

If a config already exists at ~/.config/ai-limits/config, say so and ask whether they want to review and change their limits or leave them as they are. Never silently overwrite limits someone already set.

If ds-ascii is installed: it needs a profile of the design system it will be labeling before its first render. Ask whether they have a design system they want it pointed at. If they do, run that skill's intake/PROFILE-INTAKE.md, which reads the component vocabulary from a manifest or an MCP where it can and interviews them where it can't. If they don't have one, or they'd rather do it later, say that the skill will build the profile the first time they use it and move on.

If vibe-killer is installed: it needs a profile of the design system it will be converting pages onto. Ask whether they have one in mind. If they do, run that skill's intake/SYSTEM-INTAKE.md, which reads the component vocabulary and the runtime out of an MCP, a manifest, or a repo where it can and interviews them where it can't. If they don't have a design system yet, or they'd rather do it later, say the skill will build the profile the first time they use it and move on.

If product-to-storybook is installed: it needs a profile of the Storybook it will be relocating product screens into: how a story is written there, where product screens should live, and how the design system loads. Ask whether they have a design system Storybook. If they do, run that skill's intake/STORYBOOK-INTAKE.md, which reads most of it out of the repo and asks about the rest. If they don't have one yet, say the skill will build the profile the first time they use it and move on.

If more than one of ds-ascii, vibe-killer, and product-to-storybook is installed, run whichever intake they want first and say that the others will read that profile rather than asking everything again.

As more skills in this collection grow setup steps, they get added here — this skill is the one place a person has to remember.

4. Point at what needs no setup

For anything installed that needs no setup, one line each — what it does and how to start it:

  • ds-inspection — run /ds-inspection from inside your design system's project
  • product-inspection — run /product-inspection from inside the product's project
  • ds-adoption-plan — run /ds-adoption-plan from inside a product you want moved onto your design system
  • ds-ai-rails: run /ds-ai-rails from a project and point it at your design system to assess, set up, or verify the AI workflow
  • storybook-to-product — run /storybook-to-product from inside the product, and point it at the Storybook story you want to ship
  • what-do-i-make-of-this — run /what-do-i-make-of-this and paste the thing you're trying to make sense of; it asks what it needs to know about you the first time

Skip the ones they didn't install.

5. Close

If the limits interview ran, it already delivered its own close — don't add a second one. Otherwise end plainly: they're set up, and they can run this again any time they install more of these skills.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Setup Brad Frost Skills AI skill do?

START HERE after installing Brad Frost's skills — run this once to get everything set up. Finds which of the skills you installed, runs the setup each one needs (the limits interview), and tells you how to use the ones that need no setup. Use when the user says "setup brad frost skills", runs /setup-brad-frost-skills, has just installed this collection, or asks how to get started with these skills.

Why use Setup Brad Frost Skills on TypingMind?

Because you install it once and use it with any model. Setup Brad Frost Skills is plain Markdown rather than provider-specific code, so the same skill runs on GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or a local model — and you can switch model mid-chat without it breaking. TypingMind runs on your own API keys, so you pay providers directly instead of a per-seat subscription, and your skills and chats stay in your own storage.

How do I install Setup Brad Frost Skills in TypingMind?

Open Plugins → Skills → Install from GitHub in TypingMind and paste https://github.com/bradfrost/skills/tree/main/skills/setup-brad-frost-skills. TypingMind reads its SKILL.md and installs it as a skill you can enable per chat.

Which AI models can use Setup Brad Frost Skills?

Any model you connect in TypingMind. AI skills are plain Markdown instructions rather than provider-specific code, so GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and local models can all load this skill when a request matches it.

How many AI models can I use with Setup Brad Frost Skills?

As many as you like. As long as a model supports skills, you can use Setup Brad Frost Skills with it — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Llama and more — all on TypingMind with your own API keys.

Is the Setup Brad Frost Skills AI skill free?

Yes. It is published on GitHub by bradfrost under the MIT license. You only pay your own AI provider for the tokens you use.

What are AI skills?

An AI skill is a reusable instruction bundle that teaches an AI model how to do one specific task. It follows the open Agent Skills format: a SKILL.md file with a name and description, plus any scripts, templates or reference files the model may need. The model reads the instructions only when your request matches the skill, so an installed skill costs nothing until it is used.

How are AI skills different from plugins or MCP servers?

A plugin or MCP server gives a model new tools to call — code that runs somewhere and returns a result. An AI skill gives the model knowledge and process instead: how to approach a task, which steps to follow, what good output looks like. Skills are plain Markdown, so they need no server, no API key and no runtime, and they work with any model.
